I got my tonsils removed yesterday and could manage to swallow water. But now every time I try to drink it comes out my nose. What should I do??

I just got my tonsils and adenoids removed yesterday, and it sucks. I've thrown up 4 times and have attempted to eat or drink without getting pain. Not to mention I have this thick slobber in my mouth and it's hard to get out. Hopefully I'll recover soon enough and I'll be normal again.

Hi! I'm on day 3 of recovery and wow. I was not expecting this type of pain and suffering at all. I suffer from severe anxiety so first few moments after waking up definitely had a panic attack. Everything was in so much pain and the pain meds they gave me at the hospital unfortunately did nothing for me. I spent the next 4 hours, crying in pain and honestly being a horrible wife to my poor husband. Once I was able to take the Percocet, everything became better. I am very pleased with my recovery so far. I've always been fast at recovering, but with reading all these forums I really thought for once the recovery time would be true. But here I am day 3 and able to actually consume food and minimal pain. I'd say the worse is at night. Constantly being woken up by dry painful mouth every hour or so and I've been guzzling water non stop ALL day. Definitely going to get a humidifier. Which I would highly recommend for anyone getting this surgery. I would really take advantage of all those Netflix seasons you've been wanting to watch, but also get up and do some walking. I think it definitely helps with the recovery! I spent about 2 hours out side of the house yesterday. It was about all I could withstand, but I started feeling better and a lot more optimistic. I definitely have felt a HUGE difference already since this surgery. My throat was 3/4ths the way closed and this last year I would suddenly get out of breath bending down to pick something off the floor....I knew something wasn't right with me but a lot of drs. Ignored me....until I moved to a new state and the DENTIST informed me of why I couldn't breathe. After the surgery it's been amazing how I went so long without breathing. Taking in long full breaths and I actually feel like I got enough oxygen. Im so hoping this means I can sing again cuz I sure miss those days!! This surgery sucks from the pain but the rewards are SO worth it. We will forget about the pain in a few months anyways

Hi!! I'm 17 and had my tonsils out on August 10th, 2017. Up to the surgery I was reading tons of horror stories about recoveries and I begged my mom to cancel it. I've suffered with tonsil stones for a few years now but they never caused anything major besides bad breath. So far I'm on day 6 of recovery and I luckily haven't had any complications or excruciating pain. For the first few days I would only have an uncomfortable feeling when I would swallow but that was manageable by drinking water- I've almost polished off a 24pk of water by myself in 4 days! The only way i can describe the feeling in my throat when the pain comes and goes is the feeling you get when youre trying not to cry and your throat begins to ache- thats about as uncomfortable as it was. Days 5 and 6 became slightly more uncomfortable but by no means unbearable because I would get these sharp pains that would come and go where my tonsils were. I read that this is a sign the scabs are coming loose so this must be the light at the end of the tunnel! I've attempted ice cream, eggs, mac n cheese, Italian ice, and popsicles because I would get so hungry but an annoying sharp pain would return so I would end up taking a break or give up. Considering this whole recovery I've been more bored and annoyed that I can't eat rather than in pain I'd say that's pretty good. Any advice I would give to someone who's going to have this surgery is to drink water constantly even if it hurts the first few sips- once you get some water down swallowing hurts much less! Also keep up on your medicine- my parents were giving me liquid Tylenol and Motrin every 3 hours- even through the night- and that helped so much!! I just can't wait to start feeling better and have more energy.

So the white spots where the tonsils use to be are scabs. Just says it's healing. Think of a scab that gets left in water too long it turns white. Your mouth is also moist due to the saliva= "white spots"

I am 22 and I had my tonsils removed on July 31st, so almost a month ago now. The actual tonsillectomy went well, however, I did have a reaction to anesthesia but that has nothing to do with the procedure itself. My advice would be to drink plenty of liquids, apply ice packs to your neck and throat, take pain medication as prescribed, and eat when it's comfortable. I won't say that I didn't have pain, because I did, but it was not nearly as bad as I was expecting. At it's worst, around day 4, i would rate the pain at about a 8/10 WITHOUT pain meds, and a 3/10 with them. The pain also increased again around day 10 or 11. It definitely felt like nerve pain in my ears and jaw, which was way worse than the sore throat. The most pain i had occurred when I drank or ate anything too cold. I would advise warm, or room temperature foods and drinks. I pretty much ate nothing but cream of wheat cereal with almond milk, and room temperature water for the first week. After that, I worked in some smooth soups and mashed potatoes. Stay away from dairy as it will make phlegm build up in your throat, frozen food or food with too much sugar in it. Also DO NOT let yourself get dehydrated. I made the mistake of doing this, and had to go back to the hospital to get fluids. Overall, the recovery was not particularly fun but i can imagine far worse.
Now I am a month post op and these are my results:
No more snoring, much easier breathing, no more tonsil stones, no more bad breath, and no more feeling like I constantly have something in my throat. I am very glad i had this surgery!

I got my tonsils out 4 days ago. I'm in so much pain I'm trying to eat ice cream right now and it's nearly impossible. The Percocet they gave me too doesn't do sh*t. Besides like the half hour to an hour it works.

Better to get it done at a young age x

Hi, I'm christina and I'm 18. I'm going on day 7 of my recovery and I feel as if I'm not getting any better at all. My throat is a lot more clear, it doesn't feel clear though. And everytime I wake up I'm balling my eyes out from the pain. And let me telling you crying makes it so much worse. I had a prescription that was supposed to run out yesterday but I had some left for today (hydrocodone acetamn). The pain has been so unbearable so I decided to go to my family doctor to see if I could get more pain medicine since my surgeons office was not open. Along with me getting thrush from the antibiotics...not fun. I'm hoping my healing will get better and I real hope it will improve becasue I fell like I feel worse every day

Hello everyone!
I had my tonsils removed back in Jan. Smooth recovery but now, I have this like yellowish line going down the back of my throat.. I made a doc appt for tomorrow to see what my ENT says. It's super weird!!
During my time with my post-op care of my tonsilectomy (that antibiotic was GROSS) but it does get better. Eventually, since I had trouble sleeping, I was able (within a week) have a full nights rest.

Hey team. I know I'm late to the party on this one. But for those who come through after this point here my peice. Dont get your head in a tizzy after reading things on the internet about. If it's a complication your doc should know what it is, youd be amazed how many trolls there are on here attempting to make you lose your mind. I had my tonsellectomy and addanoidectomy and something else done 8 days ago now. Unfortunately for me I came down with a white cell virus on day 6 which has severely set me back and made me incredibly dehydrated. As for pain, i cant take tramadol anymore and here in little new zealand we dont have the millions of different pain receivers on tap that the rest of y'all do so i have simple paracetamol and ibuprofen. My pain currently would be a 5 or 6 out of 10. I'm unlucky enough to have developed a canker sore on the back side of my tongue from the surgery which makes it incredibly hard to drink anything. So any stinging pains get to your doc. That's probably it. The white stuff on your tongue. After talking to multiple people who have had the procedure this can take a few weeks to fade assuming you have good oral hygiene. If it doesnt you either have thrush or bad hygiene.if you were a smoker up until surgery your recovery will be longer much like my own. If you smoke during recovery your pretty much screwed. Our recovery is aren't always the same as each others. Some people have different pain tolerances, some people always look for an issue point it you had 2 fairly large balls of flesh ripped from one of your most active parts of your body. It will take longer than a couple of weeks to fully recover. The 2 to 3 weeks is just to feel normalish again. All I can say is if its offered to your children when they are young do it. 10 days as opposed to a possible 35 sounds much more appealing haha.
