Well it turned out to be nothing apparantly which is relief. I think that this common feeling that everyone has may be a hernia though (I think someone already pointed this out). When I push on it the feeling goes away. So it could just be a muscle that's out of place. This isn't meant to. E a serious problem but in some cases and after a while it can get a bit more serious.

I have the same thing and yes, if I just put my fingers on the area and put pressure on it, it relieves it.
This started for me about four years ago, I think from stress, went away for about two years and is back again, after another bout of stress in my life.
My Dr. said that when it is stress related, it usually on the left side. Not usually the right side. Strange.

Hi I have had the symptoms like most of you for about 3 years.  It is like something pushing my ribcage out just below my sternum on my left hand side.  Interestingly for me I have recently lost about 1st in weight and the symptoms seemed to go away but now that I have put some of the weight back on I can feel the pressure returning!!!! I also get a slight pain going in a straight line from front to back more of an achehowever the sensation it causes is very annoying!!!!  I know everyone keeps on mentioning stress but mine went away when I lost some weight and I was very stressed.  Just to confirm I am 5' 4" and weigh 8 1/2 st so not overweight.

Had similar stuff going on  pressure under rib cage, and then on my left and right at time   had every test and then some..., finally went to a ND who gave me the hydrogen breath test it was positive. It blew me away that bacteria can make you feel sooooo sick  with pressure in your abdomen , Keep e a food diary, write down everything you eat and drink. Note how you feel everyday  I stopped  all sugar grains dairy and cut back on  meat if it takes to long to digest it takes too  much energy from you  when your sick ...Anyhow then I felt better  Take grapefruit seed extract drops that kills bacteria I was on antibiotics for two months

That's exactly how I feel. I have had this off and on for well over 20 years. I feel like, if I don't put pressure on it, it will move up more. I usually get it if I bend in a certain way, never in a standing or walking position. If I lift my leg up in the tub to shave it will happen. Mine was always on the right side, under my rib, but last night, for the first time, it was on my left. It kind of bothered me more though, because there was a little pain with that one, usually it doesn't hurt, just annoying. I had to keep pressure on it until it subsided. A few years back, my doctor had me try to make it happen there in his office, I slouched, moved in a certain position, No way, it didn't happen, until later, after I got home, figures.
He said he had no idea what it could be.

I ha a terrible pain in my left shoulder blade, side and rib. It eventually moved into my chest and over my heart. The pain was unbearable and I couldn't breathe deeply or eat much. Doctors ran a lot of tests but could determine nothing. I saw my chiropractor who discovered that what held my lowest rib in place was slipping cause that rib to push into my lung and that pressure caused the one over my heart to push out. Incredibly painful. I would recommend having an adjustment to see if that better aligns your body.

I'm the exact same. I'm 30 years old & a month ago I was awoken at 3am with a weird pain on my left side - like someone had punched me? Since then I've been to the doctor who tested me positive for D-Dimer, which basically means blood clots. I was advised to go straight to hospital to get more tests done, & after that (ie, many blood tests, heart tests aswell as a CT scan even!) everything came back clear & normal & I was told to go home, take it easy, apply heat & take nurofen. Ever since (its been a month now since the hospital visit) I've still had the feeling. Its not painful anymore but its "there" - some days are worse than others but it basically feels like one of my organs is bigger or something & pushing against my side?? Its just a feeling I want to know what the heck it is!!!! I'm off to the docs again this morning as I'm going to ask for another scan or ultra-sound. I just wanna feel normal again !

I have been researching this too because I have a samll ovarian cyst and thought that was the cause since they both started about the same time. However, my gyn didn't think they were related. Doing more research, I have come across this:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Splenic_flexure_syndrome

splenic flexure syndrome

Do some research and see if it applies to you. I notice that when it becomes very uncomfortable, my belly starts bloating.

You all have my sympathy! It's very annoying and sometimes painful. I have other things to do than worry about my ribs!

Thank you! I'll look into that to see if it applies. I'll report back...my sympathy to you too as its never nice not feeling normal yet no doctors can supply you with an answer... ?! :/

So I've had a look at Splenic Flexure Syndrome & it might be this?? Wouldn't my doctor of brought this up tho? or the hospital? My X-ray I had on Monday came back 'so normal it was boring' yet when I asked the doc what the "dark mushroom shape thing" was she said it was just gas. She didnt seemed alarmed or concerned it was there & I even had to point it out & ask her about it when to me I'd look at the X-ray & that was all I saw?!? Hmmmm, so SFD may be my issue? Any remedies/medications known for it or should I go back to my doctor & ask her to check into it some more...?? My chest is a little tight today & this worries me as that's one of the symptoms.....help??

Since they explain it as gas getting trapped in that spot, then seeing gas in your intestines sounds appropriate. Maybe they don't consider gas as a bad thing but when it gets stuck there, OUCH.

I saw one gentleman posted somewhere that he had figured out how to relieve it . He gets on all fours, lowers his head so his butt is higher in the air and is able to relieve gas and get the stuck gas bubble moving. Really, I'm not kidding. Might be worth a shot.

I also saw a suggestion to avoid gas producing foods like beans.

Chest tightness could or could not be related. Chest symptoms can be from gas but it also can be from other things like heart issues or even stress and anxiety.

Feel better.

Well my doctor didn't even notice the gas, until I asked about it so I guess I shouldnt be alarmed...I still know however that my feeling isn't normal! As far as the 'gas position I'll try it later - I sounds like a yoga move so perhaps I should do some light poses? Might help push things around IF that's my problem ? Am upping by fibre & just brought some probiotics (Faulding brand) from the chemist. I've taken 2 so far along with a yakult drink & some Metamucil - if this doesn't get things moving I'm not sure what will. I've been advise prune juice does the best job for moving gas? I'll see what that does to me I guess...anyway thank you SO much for your help/advise /words - its nice to know that people out there are feeling the same that I am & were all willing to help one another :)

Hello everyone..  I have had this same feeling it started out as a strange fluttering feeling with pressure, under my left side , lowest rib  about a year ago. Very strange feeling , not painful but annoying and aggrevating( not normal!) ,as if something was stuck up under my rib, that could not be dislodged , though pushing on it while standing relieves the pressure. Have to lean sideways when I sit long or it is unbearable!  I am average weight, 35 years old and aside from having a violent allergy to tomato sauce my digeive problems are minimal ,heartburn and cronic constipation. I went to the ER thinking the worst, tests negative for emergency situation and they did, as they always do, look at you like you are bothering them and told me it was stress but this point in my life was not paticularly stressful. So I began a series of out- patient testing , nothing except a small ovarian cyst and some " unremarkable matter" in my lungs. THEN it went away . So I thought it was a fluke and went about my life . It came back briefly in November but lasted about 2 weeks and then gone. Now it has been back with a vengence. Much worse now with shortness of breath, abdominal bloating, weight gain (10lbs one month). I went back to these uninterested doctors and this time I have a very large ovarian cyst and a smaller one . They have me waiting on a cancer test , I think just as a precaution then surgury , a nessesity. But still they tell me they have no clue what is causing the pressure. Have had stomach tests ,heart tests  ,pancreas tests and many others all NEG!i have degenerative disk disease and hormonal problem (too much androgen production for a female) that I am on Spironalactane therapy for. Could one of these cause the problem, (pressure).? Maybe connected to the ovary or even my spine? Why the heck can't they figure it out!I know this is a long post but I thought I would throw it all out there, I am in desperate need of real answers and maybe something I think is unrelated is causing this terribly annoying symptom!  Thankyou

If you read my post above, you will see that I also have this same issue and also have an ovarian cyst. I think that is the connection. When reading about others with ovarian cysts, they also have this issue. Even though my gyn told me that there is no connection, I think she doesn't know what she's talking about since so many people seem to have BOTH. My cyst is only 4 cm but if it can cause hip pain, back pain, diarrhea, leg and thigh pain, among other things, why can't it cause problems up under the ribs there? I wonder if you will still have the same issues after surgery. How big is your cyst?
