Update from me (I am the 40-something above). Much improved today, although I haven't really changed anything. Physician says blood work fine. Ultrasound next week.
I'm guessing it's just indigestion of one sort of another, exacerbated by bad diet and lack of exercise.
Will keep you posted.
I think the "no pain" thing is probably the best indication it's not too serious, but I'm not a doc by any stretch of the imagination.
Just wanted to say thank you to all who have posted on here, my symptoms started in January with discomfort (not pain) under my ribs during the night which went away after drinking milk and massaging the area. Saw my doctor who thought it might be gallbladder, put me on meds (which I was allergic to) and sent me for a scan. The scan of all of my organs showed nothing abnormal. I then developed the baby's foot/balloon under right side ribs after eating, had this for 3 weeks, eliminated wheat/dairy/fatty/sugary foods to no avail, the symptoms went away on their own. For a month I was completely symptom free, it was as if it had never happened! Then 3 weeks ago it started again, also central in my stomach, followed by sicky burps, pressure on the left side, too, on the bottom of my ribs on the right side. I have been taking peppermint oil capsules which worked at first but now dont. My bowels are loose, with occasional urgency. Am seeing doctor on tuesday, have a feeling I will be sent for another scan, which will show nothing. It really puts me in a low mood, then I feel anxious, that makes the pressure worse, and I'm in a vicious circle. Before all this happened in January I have suffered with IBS on and off for years. So, thanks to all of you, I no longer feel alone, good health to you all and God bless. xx
Hi, I have all the symptoms that you are describing. My ordeal started approximately 10 months ago. Developed terrible heartburn, extreme pressure under the right rib radiating to the side of my body and in my back. The feeling of fullness could sometimes be felt on the left as well. After having an abdominal scan done they found out that my liver and spleen are enlarged and that I have a fatty liver. Went on a strict no fat no carb diet, no change. Developed a tightness in the pit of my stomach under the sternum that would radiate from there to the right side of my body. Went to hospital for test. They found that my liver is normal? But my spleen still enlarged even though it did shrink by 1cm from the last scan. The doctor advised me to have a colonoscopy and gastroscopy. Unfortunately I have no medical insurance so had to wait for a few months for my finances to improve. I was given anti-acid medication which I was told to take for my acid reflux which I know for a fact I do have. Had my gastroscopy and colonoscopy done 4 weeks ago and it was discovered that I have gastritis. Was put on a cocktail of antibiotics and a strong anti-acid tablet. The pressure and a dull ache in the pit of my stomach is gone, however the pressure under both sides of my ribs (right much worse and constant) is still there. I have started getting a tingling numb feeling in my back by my shoulder blade and right flank as well as my right arm and face as well as a dry cough (don’t know if the cough cold be related). Going back to the surgeon for a check-up in 2 weeks time.
Another update from me... ultrasound scan fine, so zero wrong with anything there.
Pain has subsided after I have been far more active over the last few weeks, so I can only recommend that if your bloodwork is fine and scans reveal nothing, try gentle exercie (for me = walking 2.5-5 km every day) and see what happens!
Stay healthy!
FF
I'm experiencing the same and it's very disturbing. The only additional symptom I seem to have is that it worsens as I lay down and the pressure radiates up to include my neck and head, so much so that it prompted me to switch on my bedside lamp, grab a mirror from the bathroom, lay back down and see if my face was all red (like it is when you hang upside down). It's like the blood is struggling to be transported around due to the pressure, kind of like when you kink a hose. It's affecting my sleep, which we all know is vital for the body to heal itself. I can't get into my own doctor for seven weeks, so I'm hoping to find another at the same practice who will bulk bill. In the meantime, I'm taking Asprin (carefully) in case the blood flow is in fact restricted... this is the only way I've been able to sleep these past few nights. I did a gallbladder/liver cleanse a few years ago and it really is amazing what is purged when doing so. I agree that it may have something to do with oil as I cooked some crumbed fish in some cold pressed virgin olive oil three nights ago and had the worst night. I'm apprehensive to do another gallbladder cleanse because this requires the consumption of olive oil along with grapefruit and Epsom Salts etc and to tell you the truth, I am afraid of what consuming the oil may do at the moment. Scary stuff, hey guys?! I'll definitely post if I find an answer.
I forgot to mention... I've also experienced breathlessness on slight exertion due to this pressure. Has anybody else experienced this?
I have had very similar symptoms. My biggest problem has been burping, constant burping. I also have a weird sensation under my right ribs. If I say on my left side it seems to be felt more, however, laying on my right side makes it not noticeable at all. I have had two EGD's and an Ultrasound, both of which came back normal. The latest was a HIDA scan which came back revealing gallbladder function at 12% (Normal is above 35% I believe). I have no gallstones shown on the ultrasound, just a gallbladder that is not functioning properly. I spoke with a surgeon and I think I'm going to have it out. Just waiting to schedule it. Have you had a HIDA scan to test gallbladder function?
your story sounds exactly like mine. I am 8 days out from gall bladder removal and the pressure is still there. did your pressure ever go away?
I have the exact same issue, where there's an odd, tight sensation in my right side, just centre of my ribs and going a little way down. I've had it well over a year ago and at first I thought it was a cracked rib or something. It didn't bother me too much, except when lying down. I usually have to lay on my right side to dull the sensation otherwise it's unbearable. But lately it's started to bother me more, so I went to the doctors yesterday, who seems to think it maybe a collection of bile in my large intestine. He gave me a small pill to take every morning before breakfast called Omeprazole, which should deal with the acid in my stomach. I'm going to see if these help over the next couple of weeks otherwise I'm going back for a scan.
I'm so happy to not be alone. I've had this same problem and thought I was alone. It's the weirdest thing! Hope we all get through this.
Oh, I forgot to mention. I'm a short, fairly skinny 22 year old male. It's interesting to see a variety of people with the issue, m/f, old/young, /fat/thin.
I also have this strange feeling on the right side . Mine all started when I was very stressed out. I went to the doctor and had the scope and other tests and they found nothing . I feel it is due to stress and your muscles in your side get a spasim try some relaxation tapes.
So..........I got on the computer because I was having the same old "what is that?????????" question as I felt a strange sensation just under my rib cage AGAIN! It really is not painful but is quite annoying......kinda feels like I am growing a human life inside me and its moving. I know this feeling well because I am a 32 year old mother of three. So here is some background....
1. I was sicker with each pregancy I had and continued to feel sick after the last one. This included nausa, the RUNS(yuck),crazy bloating, gas, heartburn that kept me up all night, and numbness. I always noticed that I was my sickest at night. It was when I would stop moving around and relax. Went to the doctor where they gave me a pregnancy test(ahhhhhhh I dont want any more kids!!!!!hahaha) and proceded to say you must have acid reflux because it does not sound like gullbladder issues....and put me on refulx meds 2x a day.The symptoms were not as strong but NEVER went away.
2. I would say about 2-3 months later the meds seemed to not work at all.....now I also had headaches,hot/cold flashes, and extreme fullness, hot(like burning on my skin) up my middle back and neck. I noticed that foods such as pizza, burgers, pasta make me so ill I would be laying in the shower for a hour after eating them. Doctor says sounds like your gallbladder.......so one GI scope and a hyda scan later....all looks GREAT! REALLY!?!?!?!?!!? I start charing my food and cutting things out.....and notice a trend oh yes here it comes............anything with bread, bread, BREAD(my favorite)!!!!!! .....and guess what I have suddenly aquired a GLUTEN ALLERGY!!!!! So I change my entire diet and I feel great and 95% off all the feeling like POOP goes away. The 5% was me eating something with gluten on purpose and paying for it OR someone like my hubby who is a chef having a brain fart and throwing some flour into a meal to thicken something and forgetting8-|'
3. So here I am still feeling like something is still not right and I run back to the doctor......I tell him I feel like I am out of it....can't sit still....can't relax.....get uset easy....cry easly....feel like I don't want to eat at all...I jolt out of a dead sleep and feel like puking(never do)......feel light headed........and I could go on and on and on. He says it's stress......and we figure out that I am afraid to eat because it is what causes me to get sick. So I stress all day about what to eat. I look online and yes I have anout 70% of all the signs of stress. So I do need to get that under control but in the mean time he gets a blood test and finds I am allergic to shell fish...not the keel over and die reaction but the poop your pants, feel like barfing, and nasel swelling kind. GRRRREEEAAATTTT!!!!! So now I cut that from my diet and I feel even better.
4. BUT................I still am feeling that strange sensation under my ribs....and I still and feeling random pain in my back right side! Sounds like it is just what you are all talking about.....................WHAT IS IT!!!!!!!!!!!
Thanks for listening to my extended story. I jsut figured some of you might have a gluten allergy or SOMETHING!!! XD
I have the same thing. I'm a 40 year old female. Healthy. It feels like a baby's foot pushing on my rib area on the right. It bothers me mostly when I sit. Not painful at all but annoying. I have a healthy diet but I do have a glass of wine at night. My bilirubin test was slightly elevated. My primary told me the next step was to see a surgeon. Surgeons like to do surgery and I'm not sure I want to do that. I will try to cut out my alcohol and watch my diet.
i have the same symptoms i am female 45 and started with this about 2 months ago have been to see a consultant and he thinks it is primary biliary cirrhosis i get the have had another blood test and am waiting for a scan.
Not sure what you mean by "consultant." Cirrhosis can only be diagnosed via biopsy. There's no other way to detect scar tissue on internal organs, so a scan and blood draw will do nothing to confirm that "consultant's" diagnosis. The blood test may be able to determine whether or not your liver is acting up, but will not determine whether or not there is scarring. I would be careful who you listen to regarding your health. Misdiagnosis can be just as bad as non diagnosis. If you are a heavy drinker, or eat lots of fatty foods it may be that you have some cirrhosis going on, but his recommendation that you get scanned is evidence of his ignorance, and his diagnosis if correct would just be luck. Go see someone who knows what they are talking about.
Did anyone find out what is wrong?????
