i had holep 5 days ago , and for me the procedure was painless. The catheter was hell though.I had leaking right after removing the damn catheter.Leaked intermittently for the first day.
Second day was better and I started walking for some exersize.I believe this has helped me recover faster , as the pelvic floor benefits from walking.
I have incredible flow compared to B4 and leaks have almost dissappeared.
I go for a 2 mile walk twice a day and am feeling better and better.
Suffered with bph for 8 years and now feel like I may have beaten it thanks to Dr.Gleezerson in Winnipeg and holep procedure.

Having just had a Holep procedure a week ago, I find these to be pretty detailed and specific questions that you really should ask the physician who performed your procedure. My experience does not seem to intersect with any of your issues or I would be happy to offer comments and suggestions as part of the fellowship of those who have undergone or or considering undergoing HoLEP.

I had my Holep surgery 3 months ago with Dr. Bandi at Georgetown University Hospital in Washington DC. It was a great experience from the beginning. I have had Greenlight laser done twice and continued to have urinary symptoms. I am a doctor myself and found this doctor through my friends. The doctor was very thorough and professional and explained all possibilities at the first visit. My PSA was 15 and I had 6 prior biosies. My local doctor wanted to do another biopsy. Dr. Bandi performed a MRI, prostate ultrasound and bladder function study. To my surprise I had a very large prostate (80cc on ultrasound) even after Greenlight surgery. He didn't seem surprised and mentioned that the Greenlight procedure doesn't remove as much prostate as holep or TURP. He was confident my PSA elevation was from BPH And didn't recommend biopsy as MRI was negative. I stayed overnight after the procedure and have been peeing like a horse since then. Had some minor leakage concerns for 1-2 weeks, all gone now. No sexual issues. Highly recommended this procedure for anyone with BPH. Should have done it ten years ago.

What a coincidence. I had surgery with Dr. Bandi last month and had a similar experience. He was the fifth urologist I saw. Everyone in the community wanted to do a Greenlight laser. I had heard that Greenlight laser can cause a lot of irritative symptoms as the bladder gets some collateral damage and the reoperation rate is as high as 30%. I asked Dr. Bandi why no one would offer a TURP or Holep. He said that both procedures require overnight stay to observe for bleeding as a significant amount of prostate is removed. Most doctors in the community do not want to admit patients as they have to evaluate and discharge them next day, which their schedule doesnt permit. They would rather be in office seeing patients and making money. In addition, some doctors make more facility fee if they do the procedure in a surgery center where they have an ownership interest. He also mentioned that HOLEP has a long learning curve (20cases) and require more equipment, most surgeons give up during their learning curve. He learned holep from Dr. Lingeman himself. I am glad that I didnt have to go to Indianapolis and pay my 20% co-pay to get the procedure as that would have been thousands of dollars. I just paid my $100 deductible. I strongly recommend him for any prostate procedure (robotic prostatectomy or holep) in the Washington Dc area.

For anyone considering HOLeP, stop putting it off and get it done. Find a competent surgeon and do it. There aren't words to describe the life change it brings. You are free again. I'm 54, but my urinary health is like an 18 yr old. I sleep all night. I can travel in comfort. I can pee over a car. It's a no brainier. I put it off for over 5 yrs, to the point it was damaging my bladder. I had the best HOLeP surgeon in the south, Dr Nicole Miller, who teaches the procedure at Vanderbilt University in Nashville. Hospital care following the surgery is top shelf. In my case, it took about 12 weeks to be 100% recovered.

I'm still angry at myself for waiting five year.

I've read that retrograde ejaculation is almost inevitable with HoLEP. What is your experience?

Had Holep with Dr. Lingeman a little over 3 years ago.
Excellent results-- sex is good but with RE; a fine recovery with no leakage--none. I have posted here before and am thankful for the site--I learned a lot from it.
I like to keep things simple: went to the most skilled surgeon.
The local urologists did not have a clue--
If considering Holep, I would only consider the Mayo, Dr. Lingeman and a handful of others mentioned on the site (large institutions and surgeons who do Holep 'all day long'.

I just found this discussion board and wanted to share my experience. I had GreenLight surgery/procedure four months ago and it was a big mistake. I have total urinary incontinence and it has affected me physically, socially and mentally. I can't travel to see my kids and grandkids across country. Even going out to see a movie or for dinner involves a lot of angst and preparation to take extra depends, or to fit myself with a Texas condom and bag. After the Green Light procedure, there was a lot of inflammation, so the doctor did a second procedure called Gyrus Turp to clean up a lot of hanging residue from the GL. The doctor sat the Green Light was "too powerful" for me !!!! Maybe there are doctors who can use the GL and get good results, but just be careful.

I had Greenlight laser procedure four months ago to deal with having to get up 3-5 times every night. The results have been a disaster for me. I had to have a second procedure (Gyrus Turp) to remove residue left from the GL. I have been left totally incontinent up to this time.

Make sure you get a very competent doctor highly experienced in what he/she does. There is a new really safe procedure call PAE that's done at the University of North Carolina. Google PAE UNC Urology to read about it. I am sick about what happened to me. I've spent around $500 for adult Depends already, I'm always wet, or going to the bathroom to wash up and change. I put on dry Depends 5 or 6 times a day. I go to a special PT person, and do exercises that are supposed to help (Kegel, etc.) but it hasn't helped at all.
