I know these posting are old, but I've found them very helpful and encouraging. I had my last cigarette 8 months ago after smoking for 45 years. Since then, I've been to my primary doctor and urgent cart about 6 to 7 times for various illness such as shortness of breath, stomach pains, chest pains, swollen glands, anxiety, and depression. I think my primary care doctor's office thinks I'm wacky. My latest discovery though a recent X-ray is that I have acid reflux and then through a stomach X-ray found out I have a slightly enlarged liver. Chest X-rays showed scoliosis. It's such a slow process to see my primary and then get an appointment with each specialist. I feel like smoking again just to feel like "my old self", but I like being a non smoker and really hate to start again. I thought I would feel better after quitting smoking, but I feel so much worse. I saw a lung specialist who suggested knitting to take the place of smoking....clearly no help to me. He's ordered a CT of my lungs for my shortness of breath which will happen in a few weeks. My latest symptoms are extreme sleepiness and foggy headed where I can't seem to function or think clearly.

Have you had thyroid test done? It is very common to be diagnosed with Hypothyroidism after quitting. You have some of the symptoms. Please research it. Best wishes.

Yes, I had thyroid done, but doc says I'm normal. I agree with you though...sounds like hypothyroidism. Going for a glucose test in a few days....just hoping to find an answer....

Also, I didn't realize there were more recent postings on this site. It helps to hear other people's stories and how common our feelings/illnesses are

Hi Brandon, thanks for coming back to post your 1st anniversary....congrats! I'm 8 months smoke free, but feeling everything talked about above....I agree with you....it is a real phenomenon and none of the doctor's I've seen have acknowledged anything about my quitting smoking with all of the symptoms I've been having. They think I'm that crazy person trying to get an appointment again. It IS comforting to read about people's stories and really gives me hope that I"ll feel better and like my old self soon. Quality of life has definitely taken a dive for me. I'm hoping you're right....the longer I go the better I'll feel...take care and keep posting!

BEWARE. NICOTINE WITHDRAWAL CAUSES SUDDEN ONSET OF DEEP DEPRESSION & THE DOCS WILL MAKE YOU A PSYCHIATRIC PATIENT & PUT U ON ANTIDEPRESSANTS. END OF YOUR NORMAL LIFE. PERIOD.
DEPRESSION HAPPENS DUE TO VITAMIN B12 DEFICIENCY. READ UP ON THE NET. START ON B12 IMMEDIATELY. YOUR LIFE DEPENDS ON IT. BYE

I'm pretty sure breathing is what causes most of the problems shared in this thread. Vitamins and supplements get thrown around a lot in those type of threads(unexplained ailments), but rarely do they consistently help anyone who tries the recommendations.

Someone mentioned if they breathe in a 5-2-7 manner for an hour, their symptoms disappear.

I've found that lying down flat, inflating my chest and belly with air to close to 100% (where it's slightly painful and you feel a stretch) and then belly breathing from 80-90% to 100% (keeping lungs very inflated and breathing at that level) for a few minutes does induce a rapid improvement of most symptoms, including aches and pains. The worst breathing pattern is where you breathe close to emptying your lungs, for example 10% inflated on exhale and 30% inflated on the inhale. Which if I pay attention is exactly how I breathe when I feel unexplainably bad.

Same symptoms for me after 8 most quitting....brain fog, pain left side under rib, diagnosed with acid reflux, anxiety, numbing in feet and left arm, some back pain and chest pain....isn't there a doctor that can figure this out? Why would former smokers all have the same symptoms? Does quitting smoking bring on the acid reflux and then does the acid reflux cause the stomach and chest pain? Just venting a little because of frustration...

That's a good way to describe it..spasms under my rib cage....

I thought I would update this as I'm now at the 11 month stage of being an ex smoker.
The main symptoms I have now are being fatter after putting on about 2 stone from giving up smoking :) so now I'm on week two of a diet... I always seem to be giving up things..

I still get anxiety now and again but it's MUCH reduced from what was happening to me several months ago and I can deal with it. I did go to the doctors and they prescribed me Sertraline Anti-depressants which I burnt after a week and a half as they turned all my emotions off and I felt I was turning into a zombie, awful things. They then tried Propanolol (beta blockers) which did absolutely nothing so I burnt those as well.

I have mild chest pains now and again, I can go for days with nothing then suddenly a twang which is always disconcerting. I've had every test under the Sun done at the Doctors and they always come up clean.

I have saved £1300 and haven't smoked almost 10'000 cigarettes in this time, interesting numbers!

I do feel better at the end of it all, still think I have a way to go yet and maybe I'll always be recovering, but I don't crave or fancy cigarettes, they stink!

I have to say, as a lot of people have noted on here, that the giving up smoking services and the Doctors have been very little help, and it's all been down to my will power and self preservation.
When going through all my symptoms they seem quite dismissive and not interested, quite keen to get a prescription on me rather than listening and supporting.
It's obvious from this forum that the symptoms people can experience from giving up can be huge and very troublesome and it would be nice if the medical profession actually took note of what people that are going through the withdrawal actually experience.

Does anyone know if this is a thing, i wuit smoking 3 years ago but i breathe as though my body needs extra oxygen. I end up breathing more and have to use breathing excersize to slow it down. If i dont use the excersize eventually i get headaches, fast pulse and the anxiety gets unbearable. I think i need to start on some sort of meds. Before i quit smoking i had a sharp pain in chest when i lay down thats why i quit. All tests done show nothing. Anyone ?
