I'm 26 (turning 27 next month) and female. I got my tonsils and addenoids removed on 12/22/08. It's now day 8, and since day 5, I've been driving around town and getting small errands done. The mornings are still very painful and the nights are still sleepless and uncomfortable, but with the afternoons and evenings under my belt, i somewhat feel like i have my life back.

Here's what the doc prescribed me:
1) hydrocodine (pain killer) 2) an anti-inflammatory med (i forget what it was called) 3) anti-biotics (amoxicillin) and 4) throat numbing liquid. Today is the first day that I stopped taking pain killers. I had to take all of the anti-inflammatory meds (2 per day for five days). I'm still on antibiotics (2 per day until gone). I never took an ounce of the throat numbing liquid because i felt like the pain meds were adequate.

Like many others, I had to take the pain meds every 4 hours or else I'd be in a LOT of pain. It wasn't excruciatingly painful. I could think of some other pains that could occur in my adult life that would be more painful, but yes...it was painful. I do advise that the next pair of pain pills be taken before the effect of the current meds wear off...otherwise, it will be very painful to swallow the next pills.

I stayed with my mom the first four days. Please.... have someone you trust can take good care of you (like your parents). Moms just know best! She stocked up the fridge with ice cream and had all the necessary ingredients at home to prepare soups. The first couple days, I lived off broth. She made a chicken vegetable soup, blended it in a blender, and served it to me at room temperature. It's important that you don't consume food that is too hot or spiced.

The next couple days, she tried serving me soft foods... by soft, I mean vegetable soup. The vegetables were boiled at high temperatures for so long that it broke apart in my mouth very easily. I think it was the fourth day that I tried eating meat. The meat was soft from days of marination. I probably shouldn't have eaten it, but it looked so good. :-) I just chewed it a lot and down it went. I think it may have irritated my throat a bit though... so I dont' advise it.

The fifth day, I was able to meet friends at restaurants. I went to a japanese restaurant and had UDON soup. Udon noodles are thick noodles in a delicious broth. I let it sit for awhile and was able to eat it without any issues. The next day, I went to a Korean restaurant and had DDUK MANDOO GOOK which is a rice cake dumpling soup. My point is... I was able to eat NON-spicy, brothy, mushy food just fine by day 5.

Nights are still plenty restless. My uvula was so swollen, that it would sag on the back of my tongue. When I tilt my head to one side of the pillow, the uvula would hang to that side, and etc. If I had my head tilted straight, the uvula would actually close the airway between my mouth and my nose, and the feeling is very uncomfortable. I felt like I could suffocate in my sleep if I were to breathe through my nose.

The best way to sleep: close your mouth (so that your throat doesn't try up). lay on your side, and rest your head on a soft pillow that won't tilt your head at an awkward angle. Also, keep water with you at all times. Stay away from dairy products...even ice cream because I would get phlegm build ups and it would be uncomfortable. Instead, try sorbets, which aren't milk-based. I saw recommendations of popsicles, but I don't recommend it myself. Try otter pops instead, which do not require the sucking that could potentially dislodge scabs.

I know this entry is verbose, but I thought someone would be able to use different parts of it. A cookbook for patients would be nice...though I don't know if there are any around...

good luck! i wish you all a speedy recovery.

simplysoo,

why they give you pills instead of liquid meds? my dr didn't pres. the anti-infla. yah i don't feel comfortable to drink cold liquid but i have to because yesterday i was bleeding hmm i mean really bad but called dr. and he suggested keep gargling with ice water if it stops then i'll be alright. miracle i checked it today and it looks pretty clean with thin scabs over it. Been eating liquidy food since yesterday and feel really hungry every 3 hr :-(

Hi, I'm 25 yo on day 7 (day 1 being the day of the op) and I think the pain is getting worse! Day's 1-4 weren't too bad (in retrospect, they were painful at the time but nothing compared to this!) and I thought I was doing quite well being able to eat most foods, even pizza on day 3 and 4.

I've been making sure to keep hydrated, but on the morning of day six, I woke up to a massive stinging sensation which rendered me speechless! I tried to drink through it, as I read that when you sleep, the scabs dry out and that's why they became so painful. Eventually it stopped hurting but now, I'm finding it really difficult to even swallow soup, let alone anyting solid.

I'm desperately hungry and need to eat some decent food but I'm struggling to find anything I'm able to get down. How long will this last and should it be getting worse now rater than better??

Yeah you were right on that. Mine was different because whenever I woke up and spitted out with scabs, phlegm and some blood. It scared me but nurse said it's okay to have some blood when scabbing. It's really painful; it's kinda someone stabbing your throat. You may want to call your dr and ask him/her to prescribe you the numbing medicine which you can swish in your mouth for couple minutes then spit it out. You won't feel hurt when swallow. Take pain killer 20-30min before you eat or drink it helps a lot. I'm on day 21 but still feel something weird inside my throat.

Wish you get better soon.

im an 18 year old female on day 6 of recovery & am FINALLY seeing some improvements. i suffered 8 cases of strep in the last six months, needless to say - my tonsils HAD to do.
my mother is an ent so i felt prepared for what was to come. boy was i wrong. i would rather go through my wisdom teeth extraction three times versus a tonsillectomy.

day one was fine. i think the leftover anesthesia helped. i wanted ice cream, but my mother -the ENT- highly recommends to avoid dairy. the dairy can add to the thickness of the mucus in the back of your throat, making it more difficult to swallow.

day two was horrid. i woke up with intense ear pain! did anyone else experience this? apparently its more common the older you get. i was NOT prepared for this. i found nothing to take the pain away. ice packs to lay on both sides of the throat were a god send. they, with motrin [or ibeuprofen] were a godsend. i slept with ice packs plastered to my face. i didnt eat at all this day.

day three i finally opened my mouth wide enough to see white covering my entire tongue and mouth. my breath was disgusting. the lyquid codine was all i was able to swallow despite my parents trying to force water down my throat. i sucked on Pedialyte Popsicles which will keep you from getting dehydrated. i tried to muster down some gatorade but it burned. i later learned to water down drinks, like apple juice.

day four i awoke again with intense ear pain, which i found more painful than my throat. my throat was raw. i had some chicken broth and the warmth was really soothing. i kept ice packs on my face for the swelling and took some motrin for an added anti-inflamatory. i took my meds as directed, but had some added nausea this day. throwing up was the worth pain.

day five i could start to feel the scabs develop. i was dealthy afraid of coughing up the scabs so i kept my throat wet. drink lots and your scabs will dissolve and not end up in your mouth. my throat seems to feel better at night. i ate some mashed potatoes fairly easily. sleeping hasnt been a problem. the drugs prob help.

today was day six and i am finally feeling some relief! my ears were still bad when i first woke up but as the day progresses and i use my jaw more, it subsided. the left side of my jaw is sore and hot tea helped my swallowing. i ate scrambled eggs and pasta tonight with no difficulty.

i actually absent mindedly didnt take my pain meds today and wasnt ready to commit suicide.

just wonering when the ear pain should disappear completely?!

good luck to all of you!

1-20-09: I got my tonsils taken out a few hours ago and as I get further from the surgery med's I am gradually gaining pain. i have been using a humidifier, eating my vicodin crushed up in plain vanilla ice cream, using ice pacs on my throat, and neck (VERY helpful), eating ice chips, and drinking PLENTY of cold water no matter how much it hurts. So far so good, and I hope this is helpful. I read several sights like this and it was all very helpful. The most reoccurring advice that the doctors didn't say was the ice chips, and ice pacs on the neck and throat. I am not sure if the humidifier is really doing much, but it is not hurting the situation at all! Good luck! and wish me luck! I am still very freshly healing, and have a long way to go!

My daughter had her tonsils out 5 days ago and is now at the icky, painful stage of recovery. I have tried a lot of things but what workes BEST is for her to get in to a streamy shower right and stay there til the hot water runs out. I have her get in right when she wakes up. That aleviated MUCH of the pain and suffering right away. I also have her swallow PURE cold pressed olive oil by the tablespoon (1-2) and am giving her a tablespoon of honey after everything else to coat and soothe her throat.
This is a hard time for her but these things help. Oh, I am also having her drink kefir (a yogurt drink) to keep from getting stomach aches while taking antibiotics. This keeps some good bacteria going in so she doesnt end up dehydtared from diarrea.
Good luck!

Hi everyone, hope you guys are all coping today. I can sympathies with you all right now, im 20 and on day 6. Oh my life the pain!! Every night i wake up at 3am in tears because of the pain in my ears. Sounds like you've all been experiencing this too! Im trying to sip water as much as i can, like many of you im horrified at the thought of having scabs in my throat. It seems that there is NOTHING that can be done to help this ear pain?! It seems like most of you are form the US, so it might be different for us in England, but all ive been given is Paracetemol tablets (yes, they gave us things to swallow - genius...) and Diclofenac. This seriously isnt doing anything to help the pain...Im thinking of starting to set an alarm for 2am to take some meds to perhaps get through the 3am and 5am crying episodes!! Mind you, this is easier said than done, as at the moment when my ears are bad i can swallow anything, not even a sip of water without gagging or it trying to trickle out my nose!

I cant believe we are just expected to just soldier on like this, its torture!!

Hey guys I am a 24 year old female who had her tonsils out using the coblation method on the 19th of Jan.

I've been eating a lot of mashed potatoes and pudding and jelly, but all the sweet food is really making me feel sick now so my mum went to the store and got me baby food today. It is fantastic because it is real food that is all mashed up and soft. She heated some up in the microwave and it was lovely, I recommend trying it. I also got these packets of electrolyte formula that you add to water to make a kind of gaterade. I add about a 4th to my water and it makes it much nicer tasting and helps rehydrate me.

Hang in there everyone. This is so painful and the medication really messes with you and it is such a struggle to eat and even drink. In a few months you will all be better and can have normal healthy lives free from damned tonsillitis!

Im 34 had my tonsils and adnoids removed on 5/19/09 , Yes it is painful and the recovery has felt like forever but I will tell you Im so glad I did it. Ive been suffering from chronic problems for the last 5 years and they just realized its due to an infection in my tonsils that wasnt going away.

So having it done is painful and yeah at my age its been hard but oh well its not going to kill me.

one thing get a humidifier its helps keep up the moisture in the room and helps with the recovery and healing. Doctor gave me Liquid Vicodin to take every 4 hours, and an antibiotic once a day for 3 days to make sure no residual infection.

days 1-5 were the hardest , you really need to relax and not push yourself to do things or you will be regretting it day 6-7.

day 6-8 is when you start feeling more energetic and you want to really do things but at this point dont push it your body is doing better but your not completely there yet.

day 9-10 is when I got alot of energy back and started doing things more around the house and watering outside but make sure to take alot of breaks also.

went back to work on day 12 and by the time my day was done I was so tired. but felt good getting out and doing it.

All in all getting my energy back and feeling better. throat still is uncomfortable but im off the pain meds and happy that I went thru it. :-D

hello everyone, i got my tonsils out 4 days ago and im 18 yrs old.. and damn this is pretty bad. I take lortab which is pretty much my savior although my parents are trying to get me to stop taking it because they say it's addicting? I only take it every 6 hours and have even waited 10 hrs (which was hell!) I keep a large coffee mug full of water by my bed along with my laptop in my lap to keep me company and that's what i've been doing to get by. Chewing gum also helps alot to keep my throat moist and help in the healing process. I have so far lost 10 pounds going from a 112 to a 102 which isn't making me happy at all. Im already small enough and sometimes i blackout when i get up from out of bed. Last night i spit up part of the white scab in the back of my throat and tasted some blood.. but i haven't gotten sick yet not even after the whole surgery :-) i miss food and constantly think about mcdonalds hamburgers (double quarter pounder!!!) i want one so bad.. it's crazy what we take for granted.. being able to eat solid foods for instance. I hope to get better soon.. i miss hanging with my friends and summer has just started so i hate being cooped up. But i'll keep my head up and stay positive b/c hey i know i won't die.. right?? :-)

hi everyone! I got my tonsils out on Tuesday, June 9th and right now I'm on day 6. I'd just like to say...I was NOT expecting it to go this way! I have a very high pain thresh-hold, but boy was I taken back by this surgery! The day of the surgery I went in a bit nervous because I had come across this website and read all the horror stories, and I can't lie..I was also pretrefied of the IV haha. As soon as I was done with the surgery and on my way home, I started to feel nauseous and I made my dad stop at McDonalds so I could get an ice cream....not a good idea guys. STAY AWAY FROM DAIRY!!! It feels sooo good when it's actually going down your throat, but it just causes more phlegm to form and it's not the most pleasent feeling. That night, I just had lots of water and had my meds every 4 hours or so.

Days 2, 3 and 4 were def. more painful...but eating things like baby food and drinking lots of water helped. On the night of day 4 I stopped taking the lortab because I felt it was making me way too loopy.

Day 5, I woke up so nauseous! All I wanted to do was throw up! But I knew if I did, I would prob. cause more damage than good...but then again, maybe it really wouldn't have done me much harm at all. I managed to eat some mashed potatos, mac and cheese and just the crispy part of the chicken from KFC. haha I only had about a cup full of the meal before I became full. I've lost about 4 lbs...I was hoping to lose more, but hey, there's still like a week left of this torture!!

Now I'm on day 6, woke up nauseous again...so I was really avoiding getting up from bed and actually waking up. When I finally got out of bed I had a glass of milk (dairy is bad, I know, but I felt like I needed something other than water in my stomach!) and I made myseld some toast without the edges, hoping to be able to chew it up a lot and swallow..I was only able to take about 2 bites before I wanted to die. It was so painful! I've only had jello since then, and lots of water. I'm still taking my anti-biotics, but for the pain...I'm just taking acitomenephin.

I really hope this gets better! I see the nasty white scabs in my mouth and the taste is so awful! I really hope it goes away soon! And I hope I don't scare anyone into this surgery! Just remember, it's only a couple bad weeks, and then you wont have to suffer from tonsillitis ever again! It's realyl worth it! :-)

GOOD LUCK TO EVERYONE!!!!
