This happens to me whenever I drink and I eat within a few hours prior to drinking. I have tried to narrow it down to the type of foods, and it seems that sugar and starches trigger this the most. Affter I digest the food, the blotchy redness on my face/back/shoulders and scars goes away. The symptoms also include the irony taste in mouth, shortness of breath, and increased heart rate.

I drink a lot of energy drinks, I am english/Irish decent, started drinking at 16 and has been happening since I have been 18 (currently 26 years old).

Again, only triggered by food. Perfectly fine if I have not eaten in the 2-4 hours prior to drinking.

Has to be a combo of the caffeine alcohol and food. I look like my head is popping off sometimes.

For me face (and sometimes neck) redness happens when I combine alcohol and sugar. It's almost guaranteed that if I drink something like the equivalent of a bottle of sweet wine, or a few beers and a sweet shot, or just it a slice of cake and have a few drinks, I get red faced, it is not itchy at all but my face does feel very warm. If I have no sugar or sweet stuff I do not get this reaction no matter what the amount of alcoholm and the other way around, If I just eat something sweet without alcohol I don't get it.
I have tried using some Claritine (Loratadine) but it didn't seem to have any effect.
Other than that, just stopping drinking alcohol, having some non-alcoholic, sugar-free drinks, washing my face with cold water and cooling off a little all help a bit, but not immediately.

I understand that eating sugar, smoking and air pollution all also increase Acetaldehyde in your system not just alcohol. So possibly the sugary coke was adding to the problem?

For me I know it is the SUGAR. I am fine with any level of alcohol consumption on beer or wine, but introduce any sugar based drink or dessert, I immediately get a burning in the stomach with red patches from the face to neck and in worse cases, all over. I have had extreme nights with shortness of breathe. I find Pepcid works before a night of drinking and Benadryl after which is too late to function socially any way. My dessert and margarita days are long gone...

I'm Irish and SUGAR is my trigger...in good with any food after consuming any amount of wine or beer, but anything with sugar destroys my stomach and I get the red patches and shortness of breathe....any rum or tequila drinks are not an option....Pre-game with Pepcid and you may have a chance because I think it has to do with a stomach acid reaction from booze and sugar....it sucks when it happens and I am paranoid at important events...
