I've had something like this since March. Started out extreme itching on one toe, no redness, then spread to other toes and became red and extremely itchy. In some parts purplish. It's only at the ends of the toes, not spreading to feet. Intolerable to wear shoes and socks, itching worsens. First doc. said eczema and prescribed cortisone, it itched so badly I couldn't stand it. Tried soaking in garlic water (stopped itch but didn't heal), tried tea tree oil (controlled itch, only tried it for a few days) tried tinactin (seemed to control itch but still there after 4 weeks), 2nd doc prescribed lamisil and I'm on the 2nd day of that and itching seems to be getting worse. No other health issues, the itching is HELL and I'd love to know what the heck this is and how to get rid of it.
I have had a callus looking painful third toe since 2003. I have also been to every kind of doctor. Finally a dermatologist took a biopsy and found that it was chilblains. It can be caused from hormonal change, lukemia or some other blood disease. I pick hormonal since it all started when I went into menopause. It is especially painful in cold weather. But this year 2009 it looks like it is starting on some of my other toes. it looks like thickened skin around toenails-like a fungus, or a callus under the tips of toenails. Very discouraging-hate to wear flipflops. I keep thinking it is some other form of a weird disease. The pictures on the internet look like the pernio pictures ,so I guess that is what I have to believe.-Carol
I thought I'd follow up on my first post (Posted: 06/11/09 - 17:05 ) - the third doc I went to prescribed Fucidin H -he said it was viral with bacterial co-infection -- I'm not sure about the viral part but it has certainly responded to the cream. The itching is GONE (was gone after first application of the cream)!! The swelling has gone down..there is still redness. I'm applying the cream 3x/day after soaking my feet in Epsom salt water as the doc. recommended. I'm just coming up to 2 weeks of this treatment but will keep going for another week in hopes the redness will go. I'm amazed at how difficult it was to get this treated accurately, one doc thought it was athlete's foot (which is only *between* the toes and on the foot bottom)! Perhaps this kind of bacterial infection is more common than doctors recognize.
Perhaps resarch raynaud's phenomenom...
Hi everyone,
I to started to develope these red, blistery bumps on my toes (on the top) about 3 years ago. I am 27 now. They weren't that bad at first, and they would come and go also. They do itch pretty bad when my feet get hot. And they are pretty tender to touch. But I haven't had problems wearing shoes as much as some of you all on here. Mine situation is more itching and red blisters/bumps on the toes. But no where else, not my foot or bottom os my foot, just my toes...They seem to be appear more frequent now, and also when I sit down, and my legs are elevated, my right foot's second toe turns pupple/blue on the outside. This is everytime I sit down. I went to my family doctor first, and the PA there said I had SHINGLES! So I took the RX she wrote me....they didnt go away. I then went to 3 different dermatologists....The first one said Eczema....the RX didnt work....the second one bacterial something-like athletes foot.....Again, the RX didnt work....the third did a biospy on two of my toes. My toes are really little, so it was very painful when they stuck the numbing needle throught the END of my 3rd toe! But, he was able to get enough to send to the lab. My pathology came back stating possibly chilblains....possibly associated with Lupus....So I now have an appt to see a Rheumatologist next month. I really would like to find out what is going on. They did some lab work at the dermatologist and checked me for Lupus, but they said that came back negative. So, hopefully the Rheumatologist will be able to help me. I have been doing a lot of web searching on this, and I do beleive that I have low blood, and this could possibly be caused by bad blood circulation. I am very petite and always cold = ) I do tend to be more fatigue that others, but then some days I have loads of energy....But the dermatologist asked if my toes have ever been exposed to extremely cold temperatures...and I haven't....so Im not sure what is going on....If anyone would like to reply, please do! I will take all the advise or comments I can get! =) thank you all!!

I am 51 years of age and have been to every doc you can think of , had a biopsy also and was told it was perniosis. I have read that this can be related to hormaonal change. It has been since 2003 that I hve been battleling this red painful toe syndrom. I also have a callus looking toe that hurts to high hell. I just recently started having the blisters come out in the summer time. It really is starting to bring me down. I dont have the itching like the rest of you, but the pain and burning sensation. Anyone else have the same as me? carol :-(
Since most of the cases happen during winter, most probably it's chilblains.
Ive also had this problem. Mine started maybe 4 years ago in the winter. The sore spots usually start at the corners of my toenails and then spread outward to all toes on both feet. Ive had this probably 4 times since then and it has always happened with the cold weather. Its really painfull to walk and wear shoes. Ive seen several doctors about it, one said its fungus, another said I was allergic to my detergent, another thought it was irritation from my foot moving around in my shoe too much, but Ive never had any good explainantion as to why it happens.
I have the same symptoms and I think it is athlete's foot. I use a Cycloporix (sp?) and it helps a little
I have just in the past few days noticed red sore spots on the balls of my toes - both feet all but the big toes.
On my left foot the toes are purple. What the heck is this?? Mine hurt off and on and i've had a little itching, not much but, it's only been a few days since I first spotted this.

I am 28 yrs old, and I have been experiencing these "red/purple blisters" for over 4 years now...I have been to numerous MD's and dermamtogists. The last dermatologist I went to did a biopsy of my 3rd toe, from each foot. The pathology report came back and it stated "possible chilblains associated with Lupis". So now I have an appointment with a rheumatologist to see what they can tell me....They do usually get worse when it starts turning cold, and they arent that bad when its warm....but the blisters have gotten worse this winter, than any other winter....but they were gone this past summer...I have did a lot of research on this, and I really do think it is chilblains...I am under weight and I am always cold...including my feet...they dont itch that bad, until my feet get hot, like walking a lot or ecercising and then they itch really BAD! and then it takes forever for them to stop itching once they get hot...I have tried Cortizone cream for the itching, and it works a little...but the reddness and blisters take forever to go away...and it looks really bad...but I dont get these anywhere else...not even my fingers or ears like I have read that most people do....but after my appt with the rheumatologist, I will write an update to this..maybe we all can help each other out with this!!! thank you!!
I have the exact same issues. I've had this problem for the past 4 years now and when I went to my general doctor.. he told me I'm just not getting enough circuation or that it's too cold and I need to wear socks. BS. I really believe that there's an issue and I'm so happy that I have other people to share this with!
Pretty much every winter (I call them "winter toes"), my toes get swollen. The toes practically turn red..a nice, swollen red. Little bumps form on top and it hurts to touch any part of the toe (Usually my big toe and pinky toe aren't affected.. strange.). The entire toe (joint and all) feels stiff. Sometimes, they're so swollen, they turn almost purple. Please let me know if you find a name for this, so I can actually get them treated! It's been so embarassing, every winter. THANKS!!!

Chill blains. thats what it is for probably 80% of you!! check it out on ggole then come back and leave a note if you agree!! :-) Rocket
I got itchy bumps on my big toe months and months ago, they then spread to all my other toes on the same foot and then on the other foot. They were all red/purple and swollen On different days different toes would itch extremely bad and hurt when touched. The Dr didn't tell me what was wrong but he just gave me this cream which seemed to work, although if I didn't put the cream on one night they would come back.
Recently (About a month ago) they have come back again, however this time just on my two big toes. The first time I had this issue with my toes the bumps were mainly quite small, this time on my left big toe I have 1 large lump and on my right I have 2, sort of joined together. They seem to get worse after I come back from my dance class when my feet are at there hottest and have been in my trainers. My dad seemed to think it was my school shoes as they were not practicle but when I got propper comfy new ones they didnt make a difference. The first doctor I went to see ( I saw two ) said that it could be eczema? But it looked nothing like it and it doesnt really run in the family, except my sister had it.
Does anyone know what this is? My toes are so painful, after dance I just feel like biting them off its that bad!
Please help?:-)

To all of you with Chilblains or Perniosis - PLEASE give this a shot. I am reading this thinking, my god, my same symptoms only on my fingers. Try soaking in EPSOM SALTS twice a day - I had the biopsy, tests, was on steriods and creams etc etc - nothing worked. Blisters that began as being itchy and then very painful but on fingertips when my hands get very cold - generally in winter time. On a trip to Mexico one winter, and following swimming that week, I noticed a huge difference when I was there...I tried to emulate the salt water effect at home after my mother suggested maybe that was it...it worked and I am off everything they had me on!! I cannot convey how much this has helped me and got me off all this stuff.
My doctor, incidentally the top doc Rheumotologist at the hospital, has them on his feet...he said nothing had helped him and when I told him...it worked. Please try this - I hope it helps someone out there!
