I was on Remeron in 1997-'98. The first couple of times I smoked marijuana after starting Remeron, I had panic attacks, but the panic attacks eventually went away. However, they were replaced by a physical feeling of alternating pressure and lack of pressure, like my veins were inflating and deflating constantly. At first, it went away after a few days, but after smoking weed occasionally and taking Remeron consistently for six or eight months,, it only got worse to the point where I had the symptoms 24 hours a day. It got so bad, I had to completely avoid caffeine and decongestants too. So, I stopped the Remeron, but the symptoms NEVER went away. I haven't smoked weed in 10 years, I don't drink alcohol or coffee at all, but the symptoms, 16 years later are still there. I have seen numerous doctors, and the only diagnosis I have ever recieved is labile dysautonomia.
My advice is: if you're going to smoke weed, don't take Remeron! There are other antidepressants that don't react with marijuana so bad, like Prozac or Zoloft, though they may make you lazier than the average pot smoker. But at least they won't give you panic attacks and a lifelong circulatory disorder.
In retrospect, I would have been healthier today if I threw out the Remeron and just smoked pot when I was depressed.
I take 30mg of remeron per day and i've smoked cannabis for about 10 years and i can say the same thing has been happening to me since i started taking it. Crazy panick attacks, heart racing, sweating, thinking im gonna die lasting anywhere from 20 minutes to an hour after i smoke a small bowl. Not fun and kinda scares me honestly so i have stopped smoking while i remain on it. Hope it gets better man
I realize this post was made 13 years ago, however if anyone like me is revisiting this in 2021 i though I’d let you know my experience of the weed and remeron interaction.
I was a daily smoker for years, and I mean years. Not once did I experience an anxious high or weed panic attack. As soon as I started my higher dose of remeron, my highs and were changed forever. Couldn’t get high with out feeling like my heart was gonna pound out of my chest. People often say these too don’t have an interaction, but I firmly believe they do.
