I have varicocele in the left side since I was a child, and it doesn't bother me. Last year (Nov - 08), I started to feel pain in the right side. After a while (like one month), it was over.
Than this year, about May - 09, it started again. I went to a doctor who happens to have been teacher of my brother (now my brother's a radiologist), he touched the scrotum and felt a bit of varicocele in the right side. I did a spermogram and a eco-doppler. The doppler showed only varicocele in the left side, but nothing in the right one. The spermogram showed some loss of quality of sperms.
My doctor said that, without sperm quality loss, he wouldn't suggest doing a surgery just for the pain. But he also said that, even though the doppler showed no varicocele in the right side, he had felt it during his exam, and that it was common to smaller varicoceles to show up, when you exercise, stand up or something, and to disappear after some minutes seated or laid down.
Well, if I were most of you above I'd try to touch my scrotum when it pains, to see if you can feel the varicocele grown in these occasions. I'm sure my pain has to do with the varicocele in the right side, because every time I feel the pain I can feel, in the scrotum, the "enlarged" veins of the varicocele. While there's no pain, the veins remain thin.
Now I'm thinking if I'm going to surgery or not - it's up to me.
(Sorry for my English - I cannot write it as someone who lives in a English-speaking country.)

you have a varicocele. Meaning that that you have an enlarged vien that is on your testicle. I have the same problem. You have a sh*t pain on your left leg, which is like a dragging feeling. You cant do running because it hurts the f**k out of your leg. Go to the doctor or an A&E or clinic, have an ultrasound on your balls, explain the symptoms. You need an operation called emobolization. It involves a surgical process where the surgeon puts coils around the varicocele and that should cure your pain. good luck

I have too be diagnosed with vericocele in my left testicle and apparently it is more common in the left side. I got an ultrasound because I thought it might be a hernia but nope, just veins that are killing my testicle and abdomine. The pain can get really severe and has been hurting me constantly for 3 moths now. I am 26 and have been given the option for surgery but with no promise that it will help the pain. I guess it is time to get my nut cut and see what happens. This is the kind of sh*t you dont hear about until it happens to you.

Hi,
I read the whole page outloud to my husband and we could only laugh and shake our heads.
NOT at the pain or what you have been going through, but it is EXACTLY what is going on with us.
My husband's intestines slip through and fall down into his ball-sack,and he's been able to get them back up inside him again.
This hasn't happened for around 2 years but then, just, like, not quite 4 weeks ago, they slipped back down and he can't get them back up !
It was hurting him alot to stand so he went to the ER and took an X-Ray (but nothing showed up,of course!!!! ).
They told him he had an Inguinal Hernia and prescribed him Lortab 7.5mg-500mg (It's basically 7.5mg Hydrocodone with 500mg Tylenol or w/e) and told him to rest, and referred him to a surgeon to meet with her and schedule surgery.
Well,John laid in bed for a week (it hurt to stand) til the Appointment, and when we went to see Dr. Reid we told her what was going on, that he was diagonsed with an inguinal hernia, he has pain on standing, running from right below the right-side of his belly button straight down, that he doesn't hurt if he is laying down for long periods of time, but standing does hurt.
She felt his balls, and said "Oh,well, you have epididymitis" and prescribed him Bactrim.
That did-excuse my language-Jack Sh1t.
That was about a week-and-a-half ago.
We called Dr Reid and told her what was going on.She is STILL adamant that John has ONLY, and only,Epididymitis, but she ordered an Ultrasound.
We went in for the Ultrasound yesterday.
Turns out, the Ultrasound she ordered was for his balls only WHICH DO NOT HURT.
The Tech who did the Ultrasound said no,not epididymitis OR an Inguinal Hernia but something odd she's never seen came up,and called in someone else for second opinion, so they told us to go home and they'd call.
Well,we waited...and waited...and WAITED.
Finally, I called Dr Reid and she said John has hydroceles.
But she still is talking about Epididymitis....:X
She gave us the number for the Urologist, but he wanted $100 in cash, upfront (suspicious, anyone?) and we haven't had a paycheck in oh,nearly 4 weeks now.
So that was out.
We called Skagg's Quality Assurance to report Dr Reid for not listening to us and they gave us a number for a different Urologist, NOT associated with Skagg's Hospitals but well-known and an excellent doctor (I googled him, looked up past history, suits against him pending-none-,reviews,etc)who we're going to see TUesday....and then it'll be another week before Surgery,if THAT even happens, which puts us at 6 wekes no work,no $$$ !!!!
(I am a stay-at-home mom,btw and we have a son,4-years-old I ma homeschooling in preparation for attending KIndergarten next year, when I will start work again, hurrah!).

I am having pain in my left lower abdomen, left testicle and sometimes left side and lower back. I have been told it is a varicocele. Are these pains symptoms? Anyway, I had embolization on a "99.9% certainty" that all this would go away... It hasn't. Infact, its worse. Swelling of the veins has decreased, yes, but pain is getting worse everywhere I mentioned. Also testicle is still swelling. One thing I've noticed is that the back of the testicle often seems extended by a soft swelling, beneath which lots of small hardened lumps (small veins) can be felt. Is this normal for a varicocele? Why has it not gone down with the main scrotal veins? I'm now going to have the surgery option for varicoceles, purely because I am still having pain. Has anyone got any success stories from this?! If you can answer any of my questions then please do...this has gone on for too long :( Thanks

I have had all the pain and problems many have said on here. My urologist told me about a procedure that would help with the pain. It was called a spermatic cord block. I decided to go ahead and try it. So far so good the pain has gone with only an occasional pain here and there.

I also have experienced similar pain to most of you guys here. Most times a dull ache in my testicle, sometimes severe and agonising. I was diagnosed with a varicocele on the left and side and had surgery to have it removed 2 weeks ago.

In my case it hasn't stopped the pain. However what I can report is that the surgery all went well, the varicocele is gone and I was only in hospital for around 4 hours. It took about a week for me to be able to walk comfortably afterwards but there have been no side effects!

Hope that helps

I had a left Varicocele surgery in 2004, after being diagnosed with bilateral varicoceles.  For all you hopefulls out there ask your doctor about the chance for success.  1/3 of the surgeries will succede and remove the varicocele (however you may still be able to contract one again in the future) 1/3 of the surgeries will not solve anything and the varicocele will persist in the same degree before the surgery (now you have a cool scar for nothing)  and 1/3 will actually get worse (you still have to pay $5,000-$10,000 though)  So don't assume surgery is the cure all.  My procedure was the latter third that got worse (could hardly walk for 8 months)  So I went the alternative route and took 2 years off from lifting anything, learning how to breath properly while bending, and decreacing any strain in my abdominal area. I made the mistake of thinking I had recovered, so I started running again for excercise, and the varicoceles came back after a few weeks, so I took 2 more years off.  Long story short, stop putting your body through whatever it was that you were doing--don't go to a gym and lift weights, or hit the track.  Eat healthy, add probiotics and vitamin D to your diet, drink lots of water, and go for many short walks. Go easy on yourself getting in and out of the car/bed/chair. (use your arms not your abs) Wear sport briefs (tight but comfortable) and stay away from alchohol and hot tubs (they make it worse) Stay possitive, depression increases pain levels, and most importantly--don't take a doctor's advice online. Most doctors don't even know what a varicocele is or looks like, and any reputable doctor will be too busy in his everyday life to sit online and answer your health questions.  So the "doctors" you talk to online are either med students (no experience) or some guy looking stuff up on web md.  Get to a urologist and ask about your options, you have several.
