How can a person tell if they are having abnormal periods? I am 18 years old and I started having periods a year ago. Ever since they started there was a lot of bleeding and cramping that would last for 3 days and that the amounts of bleeding would be smaller but those first 3 days are really, really heavy. Sometimes I even miss school because I think I would bleed and that people would see.
It is normal for periods to be heavier at the beginning. The flow is always stronger and there is more bleeding during these first 3 days as well as cramping. Here are some points to take into consideration. Periods are considered abnormal when the length between 2 periods is longer that 35 days and shorter that 2 weeks; if you have to change tampons every two hours because they are soaking; if the cramping’s unbearable and sudden; if periods last more than 7 days; if you can’t get out if bed during first 2-3 days. Everybody’s perception of abnormal is different but you could take these pointers into account to see you should visit a gyno or not.
