I have been experiencing burning and pain in my right shoulder blade for about a year. I am uninsured so I go to a clinic. I have told them about my shoulder several times but they do not want to address it. They have diagnosed me with Fibromyalgia for my other problems and I am currently on meds for that but the meds does not help my shoulder blade. The meds helps some of my pain but not enough to be tolerable. I also did data entry but I have also physically abused my body by heavy lifting of items such as furniture. I feel that may be the cause of what is happening to me but I can't find any relief for the pain. I have been on prednizone for my leg and it did not help my shoulder blade, also, heat and cold does not help either. There are times that I just don't feel that I can take any more pain (too much is too much) If there is anyone that can give me an inkling of a solution for this pain I would be very grateful.

Hi all!

I am Christy, and I am 37 years old, 5'4 and weight unmentionable (let's just say I'm not skinny). I have had left shoulder blade pain with mostly a burning sensation for a few weeks now, and three 200 mg. tablets of OTC ibuprofen (generic) two or three times a day seem to help. It may take an hour or two for the full effect to be felt, and I've heard some people say that they take four 200 mg. tablets, which is the prescription dose. I have also been doing some stretching exercises, but mostly relaxation and ibuprofen lessen the severity to the point it's much more bearable.

I would also recommend trying arthritis rubs. I have found capsaicin increases circulation to the area and lessens pain, but it also causes a burning sensation, so I would recommend using with caution, and also wear gloves as getting capsaicin in your eyes hurts very badly! I have not tried heat or cold on the area, but I would imagine they could be helpful as well.

Hope this brings you some relief! The key to ibuprofen, for me, is to take at least 3 tablets per dose. One or two didn't do much for me. Also, be careful if you have stomach problems and eat before you take the ibuprofen and maybe take some antacids.

Good luck!

I have read all the posts. I have severe burning pain in my left shoulder. It stops me in my tracks and when pain meds don't work you need to see an Orthopaedic Surgeon. Scapula pain is related to ROTATOR CUFF problems. I had the MRI, and have to have surgery on my left shoulder next week. The top of my arm aches and my wrist and little finger are tingly. I read the MRI report today, YES THE MRI CENTER HAS TO SEND IT TO YOU.......just sign a release and ask them to fax or mail it to you. It is YOUR RIGHT. I found out I had fluid in the bursa sac and a bunch of problems in the shoulder. I had the same surgery a year ago, on my right shoulder. It took longer than I expected to feel good but now at 85% percent. PT does not work, it actually flares it up more as they have no clue how much pressure one can withstand (you know, everyone is the SAME....not). I have been on Percocet and even Oxycontin, which I was scared to touch.
If the pills do not work, you need to look further. I had prednisone and Xylocaine into my scapula, base of my skull and into my temple and side of my nose. It only worked for about 2 weeks. I don't want to have surgery and I do not know if the burning that I cannot stand. kind of like a white hot poker being shoved into it over and over. Most of you seem to have problems of rotator cuff problems as the scapula is part of it. I would see an Orthopaedic Surgeon. But first DO your homework on that person! My name is Lyn!

Hi all!

I think I have a solution that may help. Sitting at the kitchen table last night, I turned my head and upper body as far to the right as I could, then turned them as far to the left as I could. I heard a tiny pop, and since I did that I have had no pain at all!

I would urge using caution, just stretch yourself slowly so as not to cause damage, and there is a chance of injury, but if you are careful and do it much the same way as you would stretching a muscle and stop when you hear the pop, you may find it gives you some relief. I am not advocating doing anything to hurt yourself, but if you are in pain like I was and desperate for a solution, try this. I have seen many girls when I was in high school do this all the time, and no one ever got hurt, but be careful!

Good luck,
Christy

Christy, I actually tried this awhile back when I was having similar symptoms to what other people have said and that's exactly what happened to me too! I think that if you cant' do it yourself that it's a good idea to take a trip to the chiropractor. Thanks for posting on that though. It should really help people!

I am having a similar issue that stated several years ago. A pain the is the upper portion of my right shoulder blade (I'm right handed). It radiated up my neck and down my arm. I also do data entry. It seems like we all suffer the same issues but no one knows the cause or how to fix it. Has anything truly worked for anyone??

Well, it totally looks like we are all in the same boat. Yet today, went to the neurologist and he says it is some kind of nerve problem. Okay, it started out a 2 months ago, sharp pain by my right shoulder blade and a lump. Hurts terribly. Today, I looked at him and started crying and said why can't you fix it. I know sounds like a baby but, I am so tired of the pain and EVERY time I go, he wants to push pain medicine, depressant medicine, and whatever else he can think of. I for one am not to keen on depressant medicine, made me feel like a zombie all day long so I stopped taking it. I am 42 years old 130, 5'8" and in very good shape. I don't get it.....Had surgery on my shoulder 4 months ago, started feeling pretting good and now this.......I have had a shoulder MRI, NECK MRI and this tuesday going in for a back MRI........Sometimes I feel like I am loosing it and it is all in my mind, but I do have a lump to prove it so why can't they help???

They need to look at our posts and see that there are numerous people with this UNKNOWN problem......I also work at a computer ALL DAY LONG.

Anyway, if anyone figures this out, it will be a miracle.

I am very curious to see what happened here because it sounds very strange and if I had an answer I'd love to offer it. Does anyone out there have any guesseS?

I have been looking online and this sounds like exactly what I just started to experience. Hope mine doesn't last 6 years! I am also 25 yrs old, 5'6" 120lbs, have somewhat poor posture, and do a fair amount of computer based work (typing while talking to a client). The pain is in my right shoulder in between the blade and my spine and radiates down to my mid-ribs and up along the side of my neck. My doctor said it sounded like a rhomboid (shoulder) muscle strain, but it doesn't really feel like a muscle to me. Mine also pops and creaks when I move certain ways. I hope someone figures this thing out, because it does not seem to be getting better at all.

My best guesses from other internet research are that it could be a displaced rib due to the bad posture and computer work, but I haven't gone to chiro or ortho to get it checked out (no $).

I don't know whether to be happy I found other people with the same issue as me, or upset because it seems no one has found a solution.

I'm 23, 5'0, around 105 lbs and female. The pain started around 7 years ago, very slight at first but now to the point that I can't lift my right arm by the end of the day without crying. I'm right handed, but the pain is in my left shoulder blade extending upwards into my neck. It started when I was using the computer 6+ hours a day, and not being at all ergonomic about it. I've had xrays several times...nothing ever shows up. I've been to a chiropractor, had ultrasounds, physical therapy, massages, resorted to muscle relaxers/pain pills...nothing helps.

The pain has escalated the past 2 years due to work...primarily using the mouse only for 8 to 10 hour stretches without really taking a break. Once I realized that was triggering the pain, I bought a mousepad with a wrist coushin, and made sure to always keep my hand below elbow level. That decreased the pain immensely as far as computer usage.

The problem is, I just started school a month ago to become a hair stylist. Spending 8 hours a day with my arms raised has brought the pain back worse than ever. It only takes 5 minutes of class for my shoulder to go from no pain to the extremely excruciating, stabbing/burning feeling. I have no medical insurance, not that it would matter since no doctor I know of seems to understand what's causing the pain or how to fix it, and surgery is not an option for me as I'd have to take an extended leave of absence from school.

My stepfather owns a gym and is a personal trainer and physical therapist. He's recommended so many exercises and stretches, but they don't seem to help. I'm to the point where I just don't know what to do anymore...prescription painkillers barely put a dent in the pain, and I can't just stop using my right arm.

I seriously hope someone finds a solution. It's not right for us to have to live in pain or waste thousands of dollars on medical treatments that don't work or only give us a month or two of relief.

I've had almost the same issues described in all 6 pages except on the L side. I used to get it infrenquently but was typically brought on after a heavy day of yard work, lifting, cleaning the cars, etc. I am physically capable of just about anything and while I'm a bit overweight, I'm not unhealthy. I too have been in the IT industry for the last 9 years but have been working on computers for about 12 or so. The last 4 years has been my most extreme amount of computer work.

I've been to my family doc who just gives me pills. While they make me feel VERY relaxed, they don't do much to control the intensity. I have been to a chiro and a massuese, both of which don't seem to help much. I too am at my wits end. My current pain has been there for nearing 2 weeks now and is really frustrating. I can't take any pills through the week as they make me pretty loopy and am unable to perform my job safely. I wish there was someone that sees this who can put a name to the pain we are all dealing with so we can get it fixed. While I hate going under the knife, if it fixes my problem I will keep an open mind to it...

oh boy. I just wanted to find out what was wrong with my shoulder blades and I found this and its just what I have this bringing pain in my Left shoulder. I am 21 and 135pounds which is a normal weight for my height. I work as a Sub Custodian so I am on my feet for at lest right now 40 hours a week and during my off time I am right here on the computer for as long as I can be cause my hobby is drawing digitally .

I notice the pain maybe a year or 2 ago its still not so bad but I feel it a lot more now. I use to only feel it when sitting on my computer for long and I would get up and lay down for a while or stretch. It always feels good to stretch. But now I notice I when I get off work It hurts and I rub it for a while stretching and it kind of goes away but in bed at night I can feel like its still there like I am not laying the right way. After reading everyone comments I feel kind of sad to know that we all have this problem but no one can find out what it is. I would diffidently say its the computer fault cause that's where mine started from. I tire my best to sit up the right way but my chair don't fit well the the desk. I cant go to the doc. and I haven't been to one and wont be able to see one for a while but I got a feeling its going to get worse like everyone's. ;A; and the computer stays! lol

this is very interesting to read everyones different symptoms. I am 29 and 160 lbs at 5'10 about 3 years ago i worked as a pharmacy tech holding the phone with left shoulder and ear for several hours and typing on a computer, with that i got severe right shoulder pain, mainly severe burning senstations. since then the burning comes and goes but in severe enough that it actually feels like i have been set on fire. well 3 weeks ago i woke up and could not move my neck or my right arm the pain was so bad i cried and couldnt sleep, i put ice on it to stop some of the pain, bought an expensive pillow to correct the sleep positions, and i am already taking anti inflammitories for pain in my foot joints, knees and back. the severe pain didnt ever go away until after week 2. the pain meds didnt even help. the only relief i got was from massage which hurt like hell and ice. eventually i was able to make it a week without any pain or burning, and tonight the burning is back. i do nothing out of the ordinary and no unnatural movements or routines it just comes out of the blue. i have had numerous xrays mri's ct scan and no one has found a reason. im at a stand still and still in pain, biofreeze helps some with the burning and i live with and ice pack in my purse. i hope someone will see this and say this is me... or i can relate.. and maybe we can get our shoulder pain cured. i even try natural vitamins for lubrication of joints and arthritis. hope some of this helps someone else.

I am a 27 year old female, I have been a Housekeeper for 12 years. About 3 1/2 years ago I was diagnosed with Spondylolisthesis in my lower back. About a year ago I started to get a burning sensation in my muscles along my shoulder blades especially my left side. It occurs mostly when I am doing dishes, folding laundry or sitting at computer or desk even for a short period of time. I know I have bad posture, because I have been trying to baby my lower back for so long that, I think I am over working my upper back in protecting my lower back, now I have problems from my neck to lower back. The pain isn't too excruciating yet, I don't want to take pills, so if you have any ideas on ways to ease this pain that would be great. Quit my back breaking job would be nice, but sitting at a desk hurts too. No relief for me, I guess.

It seems most of our pain is due to repetitive things we do during the day, mine mostly flares up while I am at work doing the repetative motions, but how do we change our daily work routines? Frustrating
