This may be a genetic issue, ask your grandparents if they or anyone else in the family has these pains.

These pains would happen to me at school in the middle of school ~once every week, persisting for 1-2 hours and became so common that my classes had to make accommodations for me (8th grade). When I had these pains I couldn't stand up, so I would gat an orange paper out and put it on my desk (I wish to be discreet) so my teacher would know to let me stay through the next period when the bell rang. I sat at a seat where no one sits and would just wait it out. This sucks because I'm always smothered in homework from my other classes. Probably the worst thing someone has done to me during these moments (not knowing it would cause me uberexcruciating pain) is that he made me laugh so hard I thought I was going to die. I was crying, even though I endure pain extremely well. This is a serious problem and all the tests and diagnostic attempts return inconclusive as to what the problem is. I am such and tired of these pains and would do anything to make them stop once and for all.

Actually it's a small muscle that runs behind your belly button down in front of your bladder (That's why it hurts when you pee), and sometimes you can pull it in your sleeping or doing other strenuous or quick things.

Hey guys!

So, I have been experiencing this pain severely for about 10 years. I am 23 now and a second year medical student. I could not wait to get to the GU system to finally learn about this. I noticed that after strenuous exercise or being dehydrated when I try to urinate, I would get an IMMENSE pain in my umbilicus. It hurt so bad I would keel over in pain and not be able to stand up straight.

Well, anyway, after reading all these posts, I'm glad to hear I'm not the only one. I, too, have been to many doctors, none were able confidently diagnose anything. BUT I HAVE GOOD NEWS. After much sleuthing, and using everything we've learned about the Urogenital system, I have two theories which help explain two types of umbilicus pains people are feeling. FIRST, those who get an immense pulling pain towards their bladder, that pain is due to spasm of the dehydrated muscles in the abdomen. Specifically, the deeper muscles. They contract and pull on the median umbilical ligament which contains the Urachus. This is an embryological remnant of the allantois, a "channel" which connected the umbilical cord of a fetus to the bladder. It's a straight line from the belly button to your bladder. When dehydrated a spasm could cause a muscle contraction and severe pain. So, that pulling pain is exactly that. Best treatment: Hydration and electrolytes! Also, when the pain is occurring contract your abdomen with the pulling sensation and curl up and relaxxxxxxxxx (like fetal position). This indirect technique will relax the spasm after about 90 seconds. Then slowlyyyyyyyy return to normal posture. If still contracting, return to fetal position and hold it again.

Second, some of you explained something slightly different, which resembles more of an umbilical hernia, which may need to be operated on (you would know this by a bulge) or it could be a Chapman Reflex point indicating bladder dysfunction (which could be a whole list of different things). You could notice this, also, by a small bulge or nodule that you can feel. BUT if you don't have a bulge then likely it is the first thing I wrote.

Doctor's often lose sight of the simpler things like muscle spasm and jump right to disease diagnosing and surgery. LEARN YOUR ANATOMY and you can treat things more accurately. I apologize for all those who said a Doctor told them they were imagining it or making it up. Go to an Osteopathic Doctor next time :)

HOPE THIS HELPS

Sincerely,
(Hopefully) Future Urologist

I'm a teen and I've been feeling the hook kind of feeling since I was nine. I never told it to my parents until about a year ago, when I accidentally mentioned it. I'd always thought it was something everyone got, and u just had to tuff it out. They bring me, protesting to the hospital, where the doctor just looked at me like I was crazy and sent me home. Now I don't think my parents believe me. I couldn't tell anyone else, and so when I found this site all I could think was that I wasn't the only one! I think that if u drink like a gallon of water the pain usually lessens.

I'm a 37 year old female this just started happening to me about 2 weeks ago it's very excruciating. It started on my right lower side, moved to the left side then now is dead center in the stomach and it shoots this pain straight through the vagina and causes me to double over scream out. Like the other person said, I slowly stand back up and reposition myself and it fades. Sometimes it'll happen for 10 minutes straight. The other morning when I woke up I didn't even move one inch and it started attacking me in my laying down position. I ended up having to sit up and roll around the bed crying and eventually it calmed down. Definitely not pregnant. Used restroom normally. Not close to the monthly visitor scares the c**p out of me.

Hi, I was wondering if you had any major recovery time from this procedure or if it was a fairly straightforward surgery. i have had this pain as long as I can remember, and have gone through the "its just lady problems" song and dance enough times that i gave up. Also had a ridiculous number of utis as a kid, suggesting there may have been an undiagnosed diverticulum involved that rectified itself. I nearly cried when i found an article about the urachus at The Arc Lamp, and found out men can get this pain too! ( so much for lady problems...) anyways, i hope your results have continued to be successful!

This makes a lot of sense to what I have been experiencing-nearly everytime I've felt it I've been not drinking enough etc. The only problem is that sometimes it last for hours with very very intense pains and during that time it's very hard to do anything. Because of the intensity of the pain it's stressful to urinate even on a day without the pain. Just wishing there was an easy way to fix it :(

I'm so glad everyone here has this same thing going on.
I'm 16, male. This has been going on my whole life and I thought something was up, I've asked the doctors almost everytime I go and they say the same thing everytime, which is if it goes away shortly and is a rare occasion then it's not a problem.
I see now you guys all have this and it just needs to be diagnosed so we can spare future generations from getting paranoid about this like all of us did.

This has happened to me off and on for my whole life. I just read all the posts and I just started crying. I never knew anyone experienced this like I did. All I could ever describe it as was a sharp tearing in my belly button, it feels like my bladder is being ripped open, and it goes down to where I pee. I first got it when I was 13 and I'm 18 now it keeps getting worse and worse. Plz help me
