I'm so glad I found this post! I had my tonsils out on Mon, Oct 8th. The pain is so bad! On day 6, I ended up in the ER with severe bleeding and since then that spot has just killed. Every time something hits it, no matter what type of liquid or the temp of it, it's like someone is shoving a hot poker into the nerve there, sending shooting pains up to my ear. It seriously sucks! Good to know I'm not alone.

When i had my tonsils removed, i was taking 2 paracetamol, 2 codine every 4 hours and 1 diclofenic every 8 hours, this made my pain bareable until about 2 hours before my next diclofenic, i found that drinking FLAVOURED water, helped me alot for some reason i couldnt drink normal water, and chewing peppermint gum, and also when i ate, i made myself a crisp sandwich (Yes it sounds stupid but it did the trick), it scraped all the infection and dead cells from the back of my throat, i didnt eat the sandwhichs until about day 7, but as soon as i started to eat these my throat healed fully within 4 days.

I reccomend using some crisps like walkers etc, nothing that is soft such as watsits etc.

But i still have a swollen gland on the left hand side of my throat but i havent had a sore throat since!

I had my tonsils removed around december last year!

Hello, I am 22 and I got my tonsils out 9 days ago and I have hydrocodine and an antibiotic. I'm having trouble with it looks and feels like parts of my throat are really tight and this discourages me to swallow to do a sharp pain. Day 1 - 3 felt easy. 4 - 6 were terrible drowsy, painful, unable to eat anything. 7 - 9 bearable BUT still hurts when swallowing, it takes forever to eat things and the last few days if have had ear aches.

i had my tonsils out 7 days ago today. it hurts much worse today than it did before...on day three i was taken to the emergency room becuase i was throwing up so much, i couldnt even keep water down....i had to get an iv. they finally told me that i am allergic to narcotic pain meds. ive been using tylenol ever since. not tylenol 3 or anything, plain jane regular tylenol. and let me tell you, IT SUCKS. im lucky at night if i can even get to sleep. i havent slept an entire night through since the day beforethe surgery, ive gotten maybe 4 hours a night. anyways, im starting to get red patches on the roof of my mouth. im not sure if its an infection, i took my antibiotics so i hope not...but hearing about all of you that had to go to the hospital the week after for bleeding, really freaks me out....i have t go back to work tomorrow, and im working completely alone sat. and sun...maybe i need to find someone to cover my shift....but id prolly get fired if i call in. anyways,

to whoever asked about antibiotics, yes you absolutely must take them. our moths are much filthier than even a cats, and you do not want to go getting infectins in an open woulnd like that....you need to call your doctor.

i'm 17 years old and on day 6 of my recovery. i find out only get sharp pains where my oncils were if i have slowed down drinking, or after laying down or sleeping. i think its just from dryness, so i try to make sure i wake up alot during the night. i also have been having alot of jaw pain, both when i move my jaw to eat and after i the sharp pain where my toncils were it turns into jaw pain and a severe ear acke. i've lost 10 pounds so far and havent go to the washroom in almost a week , even with stoll softners. i also have found it hard to drink anything but water, and eat anything. ive tryed soup diffrent kinds and made sure it was luke warm , really soft mashed potatos, popsicals , jello , pudding, and even icecream.

overall, i feel fine if i've been drinking, its just when i wake up, or if ive been eating that anything hurts

Hey guys.....I'm 25 and I had my tonsillectomy the day before Christmas...
I was in a lot if pain, but felt almost recovered within 2 weeks.

The biggest problem was the co-coda mol that I was prescribed, they gave me the biggest constipation problem ever. I couldn't go at all for 1 week. I had severe pains in my stomach and a content erg to go.

The local chemist advised me with a stool softener as she said this is what is preventing it. As painful as this was I tried my best and this didn't help much.

I then was given lacteous and senkot to have the bowels moving.....however because of the sudden pain and constant erg to go I had a stinging feeling. After this is would cry every time I would go and wish I could die!

My doctor gave me some numbing cream and that gave me the help I needed.

This was an unnecessary incident and I wish the nurse had told me the side effects.

But the secret is to have plenty of water and fiber and fruit whilst having this medication.

It's coming up to 2 months now....I felt much better but the last couple of days I’m feeling so rough.....as if I’ve just had the opp all over again

When will this nightmare end!

Hi, I also had my tonsils out on Feb 11 2009, together with nasal turbinate cautery - in order to give more room in my throat and help me breather easier when I sleep and so prevent sleep apnea.

Day of Op was great, no probs with meds and was eating ok that night in hospital. Day 2 was also ok, but by day 3 it was hell. Awake every 4 hours over night to take meds and water. From Day 4 to Day 11 - it was that bitter, burning stinging pain whenever you woke up or ate.

Tricks for me were to drink plenty of water, try to eat some solid food to help scabs to slowly slough off and so prevent a massive bleed. Took Anti-inflammatories, Anti-biotics, codiene and tramadol. Took these 20mins before I had anything by mouth. Also - Difflam or a decent anti-inflammatory gargle worked wonders when in extreme pain.

Took 12 days before I was back out of the spare bed and back in my own bed and before I could sleep through the night without too much pain.

Lost 6 kilos and havn't had a beer for 2 weeks, but feel a lot better now.

So hang in there, the days do pass and then you'll feel back to normal.

Let some people come visit and even pray for you - it helps too.

I am 38 years old, and had my tonsils out on 2/16/09. When I woke up after the surgery I didn't feel too bad, and thought I might get through the whole recovery easily. It got worse. Day 1 after the surgery it was worse, day 2 it got worse etc. I guess I didn't feel like I turned the corner until day 8. I am at two weeks today, and feel pretty good. I actually feel like I could go back to work. The one thing I did notice is I have this skin stretched across the back of my throat covering my uvula. I don't know if this is correct or not. It doesn't hurt, but is sort of annoying since it makes it hard to pronounce certain words when I talk.

The main risks of tonsillectomy are pain, dehydration and bleeding. The pain tends to be worse in adults than in children. The pain causes patients to avoid eating and drinking, and that leads to dehydration. In fact, dehydration INCREASES pain, and so it is possible to fall into a vicious circle of pain, poor oral intake, dehydration, MORE pain, LESS oral intake, MORE dehydration and so forth. Bleeding also seems to be more common in dehydrated patients, in my experience.

Hello everyone... :-D

Despite being sooo scared from all the blogs I had been reading about tonsillectomies, I had mine done on 6/8/09 at 32 years old. o.O I was super nervous before the surgery but before I knew it, I woke up and my tonsils were gone! :O I drank water as soon as I woke up and went home after an hour. I kept drinking water like a maniac because it wasn't hurting yet so I figured I might as well drink as much as I can before the anesthesia wears off. Well, day two and three came along and no pain! :O Yes, I had problems swallowing but not "agonizing" like others have described, no ear pain either. Today it is day 5 and one of my scabs just came off...No pain, no bleeding at all! My doctor gave me 3 refills of liquid tylenol with codeine and I haven't taken one single spoon of it, I have only been taking the one to prevent infections. Well, I just wanted to post this for anyone that is considering having a tonsillectomy. JUST DRINK CONSTANTLY! I didn't sleep the first night, the second one maybe a couple of hours (all just to keep drinking!!!!) I think that made a HUGE difference for me. So, don't be scared, everyone reacts different to the surgery so if you need it, go ahead and get it. And if you believe in God, cling to him and pray a lot. I did.
