Shortness of breath after stopping smoking

Can anybody tell me if shortness of breath after stopping smoking is normal? I am 32 years old, male, smoked 8-9 cigarettes a day for about 15 years. I stopped smoking three weeks ago. I have never been short of breath in my life, however since I stopped smoking, I find myself out of breath, at strange times, even when sitting at rest. Is this just part of stopping smoking? It seems to be very difficult to find information on the side effects of stopping smoking! Thanks, Richard.

I have only been smoke free for 5 days. After 10 years of smoking at least a pack a day. I am 27 years old. I chose to quit after having a severe panic attack. Since then my anxiety has been very high. I find myself being short of breath several times a day, but at night is when it really gets bad. I think it is mostly my anxiety but I have found that I just lay in bed for an hour to an hour in a half before I finally fall asleep. I knew it would be hard to quit but I never knew it would be this hard. I thought I would only have trouble with cravings. Never thought it would trigger anxiety overload, shortness of breath, sleeplessness, etc. I myself have thought about smoking again just to feel somewhat better but that is not an option. I have wanted to quit for a very long time and I have to do this for my son and for my health. I never believed I would have been able to go this long without a smoke but I am very proud of myself, especially since I have been around others who smoke and still have not gave in. Thanks for the advice. I am going to try the hot shower, bending and coughing, followed by lots of water. I am so glad to see that I am not the only one having these issues. We have to stick to it guys. DO NOT LOOSE HOPE!!!! WE CAN DO THIS!!!!!! My prayers are with all of you.....

I quit smoking 3 years ago. I still cough up dark tar / sputum. I have shortness of breath. Although I exercise , I am out of breath if I climb two flight of stairs. Recently things got worse after picking up the flu, which was treated with Sporidex ( Antibiotics). I was also urged to try a syrup named Septillin , manufactured by Himalaya Drug House. This is an ayurvedic preparation. I took 10 ml x 1 morning , and night after food. It has been 4 x days now, and my S O B has gone !!! Try it out , but do not go back to cigarrettes , no matter how tempting!
Thank you @Anonymous! I will try Septillin. You say it's an Ayurvedic preparation but the name sounds rather like an antibiotic. Anyway, I will google for a supplier & try it. Thanks for the tip.
i'm glad to hear the shortness of breath goes away it has been 4 months since my husband and i quit and we were wondering why we felt like this , thanks for the info
Lots of people talk about what the doctor and x-rays show... we  smoked for years and you want instant relief once you quit!! I say give it a year, if symptoms are still there, then see dr. and perhaps get an x-ray... what a bunch of pussies!!!

Update: It is now a couple months later after my "episode" with SOB and hospital visits, etc. I learned deep breathing exercises and they helped more than anything during panic attacks. Unbelievable none of the doctors I saw even mentioned this. Found deep breathing exercises on my own and they really helped to bring me out of one of those panic attacks. Since all the tests and doctors said nothing was wrong, I started exercising more and doing more cardio workouts. Quit all the medication, quit the inhalers and anxiety medicine, and now feel much better. No more SOB and I'm left wondering what that whole episode was all about. I can breathe better now then ever. I also had inflamed nasal passages and was on flonase for a while but it didn't help much. Used nasal rinse twice a day and still do occasionally.
I too have quit a few short weeks ago. I am still having the tightness in chest and everything else but i know it is all nomal in the body rejuvinating. As for the pain under your right rib, i was just diagnosed with a "fatty Liver" it was due to my cholesterol being off. My doctors told me that once i eat better and get my cholesterol back in tack my liver will rejuvinate and the pain will subside.
thats the same with me... maybe I have sleep apnea... hopefully not
All that fuss about possible heart problems you had, seem to be exactly the same for me. Getting the Holtor monitor next week, then probably stress tests after that. I have had one episode of Atrial Fibrillation, ending in the E.R. I think most of it seems to have happened just before I quit, in fact right after I decided to cut down my smoking. That never works ,of course, so here I am, NOT smoking( 5 days now) feeling a bit weepy, and a bit depressed. The thought of making things worse, will probably keep me away from smoking forever now.
I needed to add to my post, I have smoked for 55 years, and never even tried to give it up. I guess being scared is a foolproof way to do it!
