Shortness of breath after stopping smoking

Can anybody tell me if shortness of breath after stopping smoking is normal? I am 32 years old, male, smoked 8-9 cigarettes a day for about 15 years. I stopped smoking three weeks ago. I have never been short of breath in my life, however since I stopped smoking, I find myself out of breath, at strange times, even when sitting at rest. Is this just part of stopping smoking? It seems to be very difficult to find information on the side effects of stopping smoking! Thanks, Richard.

It's called Inositol and I have been using it since November. It works wonders on anxiety which happens when you quit smoking. I use Jarrows brand which I purchased in a powered form from Amazon. When taking a high dosage for anxiety then you would need to take too many pills so powder is better and tastes great mixed in water or juice. tastes like powered sugar. Also, I take 2000mg of fish oil from Country Life called Mood Support and a good B-Complex and 5000iu vitamin D daily. This regime has helped me stay away from the anxiety meds the doctors push. Eat healthy and exercise helps as well. I am almost 7 months in. I use to get SOB daily months ago but since 5 or 6 months has been much better.
Today makes 200 days smoke free for me. and I have a very bad cold now for the last 2 weeks that is driving me nuts. Before I got this cold I was doing very good. This is the 4th cold I have caught since I quit smoking. and one case of the flue that killed me . This is not like me I use to never get sick .Today its kind of cold here in south Florida temp down to 47 overnight .but up north its very very cold and my heart goes out to those people. Just giving you people a progress report on my status .I want to wish everyone a quick recovery on this drug. and the best of luck this new year. Thanks Ralph
Yesterday was my 200th day and here in NY was -15 so I will take 47 :) Go to the Vitamin Shoppe and ping up Umcka Cold +Flu Berry Chewable. I have been using this stuff for years and it works no kidding. Works best when a cold just starts. I had a nasty cold coming on last week took this and 2 days later completely gone. What is nice is that it does not make the symptoms get worse which is why you take it in the very beginning. Read the reviews, to me during the winter this is a life saver. Keep posting how you feel since we quit at the same time will be interesting to see how long it takes us to feel like or better than we did as smokers.
If they find something then i will actually be at ease. You don't realize how much you take your health for granted until something jepordises it.
Who is they? Did you go for tests? I know my 3rd and 4th months were tough. Almost at 7 months now and things are better. Still have off days like last night could not fall asleep until 2am had a bit of anxiety and for no reason. When I start thinking about how I am breathing is when I start to feel the anxiety kick in even though my breathing is fine. Keith
I believe you are right...it's been 8 months and the last few days I am beginning to feel better....able to walk further distances without having to stop....so, I will take it one day at a time. Thanks for responding.
Keep checking in to let us know how it's going. I'm almost 7 months in now and feel much better than I was at 4 months. Today I have a bit of SOB due to anxiety for no reason at all. Hope this will go away and not come back at all but for now I just accept it and it does not hang around to long. Keith(tobefree)
I didn't use! I stopped 3 months ago with Patches but I'm short of breath and lungs feel worse
As you can see from reading the posts it is a normal progression. I think most of the SOB is due to anxiety. Yesterday my chest was heavy all day and I was convinced I was coming down with a cold. Went to bed a little early woke up fine? I must have had anxiety all day and did not realize it. I'm almost in my 7 month and can't believe I still have days like that. I can say that I feel much better than months 3 or 4. Just hang in there stay positive you will beat this. I find taking vitamins, light exercise and eating healthy helps a great deal at pushing things along. Keith
Hi Dean, At this time you should be just over a year or close to it. How's it going? I really hope you are through all of the SOB and anxiety. let us know how you a doing so we know how it may be further down the road for the rest of us. Thanks Keith
How are you doing these days?
Don't bother asking I have asked people that had these problems a few years ago and they don't get back to you so I assume they are doing well now and all the crazy symptoms have passed? Keith
I wish I would hear back from someone...it's been 8 months for me with this SOB and I really am hoping to hear it goes away eventually... ugh...very frustrating...
Hi Richard, I am getting the same symptoms, in fact so bad that it's causing me to have panicked attacks. I think it's because our lungs are trying to clear themselves as we have abused them. Try deep breathing. I also inhale olbus oil dropped in hot water this helps loosen the phlem which will help your lungs... I just hope my lungs will repair. See yr doctor if you are worried, but I think the breathlessness is a normal side affect. Good luck and well done for giving up. Jayne
