I agree with you. I have three friends that did This diet and although they lost a lot of weight they have so many health problems as you starve your body. Also they all gained back the weight once they tried to eat normal. Following the Canada food guide or a nutritionist is the best way to lose weight.

Hi there..

Pros for Bernstein
1. Medically supervised, safe and works for people who needed to be prodded and motivated
to lose weight.

2. Measured and predictable outcome as long as you comply with the program.

3. The food choices are available from your local grocer.

4. Health teachings for better, cleaner lifestyle.

Cons

1. Cost, can run you 600 - 700/ month
2. The diet book cautions not to eat anything outside the menu. People who are used to certain foods due to ethnicity may find this restrictive.

Options

Get free referral and consultation from a dietitian from your GPs clinic.
for $ 20. your GP can inject you B6 and B12.
Stick w/ your dietitian's recommendation, set the money aside as if paying her. At the end of the month, lose 12 lbs. and pocket 580. NOW THAT'S HEALTHY:)

been there....Medically supervised is very questionable. May be office dependent. Mine were a joke. 2) and 4) are not fully presenting the facts. There is a strict 900 calorie diet which most health professionals will tell you puts your body into starvation mode. Health consequences abound. Further I saw no evidence of Health Teachings. Just some foreign LPN whining about your deviations from the program...no help there. Otherwise, they could tell me why carrots are evil. Total BS this program. Only thing healthy is Bernsteins bank balance.

I'm a T1 Diabetic following Dr Bernstein's Diet and he says no grains and no fruits in his book so strange you would be told to eat 2 servings a day of each?

I did this diet two years ago, and after 6months I got diagnosed with breast cancer. My moms friends both did this diet and both got breast cancer.
I am only 31 now. I don't trust this diet. You don't know what in those injections, they might mess up your hormones. Don't do this diet.

Ketosis is your body in fat burning mode, not life threatening. Ketoacidosis...is life threatening. It is common these two get mixed up.

I have used the diet several times in the past. It works very well at first if you are obese because you will see immediate and good weight loss results for a few weeks. The loss is much less the following months. Once you reach 165 pounds, you might lose 1 to 2 pounds a week. This is when the nurses suggest you try the maintenance program. If you stay on the strict diet, with your slowed metabolism and still have 20+ pounds to lose, it will be grueling, very slow and expensive. It would be worth it to take one week "breaks" to save your money. It will allow you to confirm if you need the visits to lose weight (since you will know exactly what to do at this point) and verify if the gimmicky vitamin B6 B12 shots make any difference to your weight loss.
They claim you do not need to exercise to help with your weight loss because, supposedly, exercise will not give you a greater loss. I found this to be untrue. If you do not exercise very regularly, even if it is just walking daily, your weight loss (after you are no longer in the obese category) will dramatically slow down.
I recommend the program if you are obese because you will: be accountable to the nursing staff; learn how easy it can be to not eat certain (bad) foods and not miss them; and, learn how to diet safely and not feel tired. If you are overweight and have never followed a diet properly before, Dr B diet is a good way to learn. Otherwise, you could try it for 2 weeks to a month to get the hang of it, then try it yourself.

Your information is in accurate. You do not need that many calories to be healthy. Humans are not designed to eat as much as well all think necessary. It is healthier to eat less. Not more.

THIS is possibly the BEST advice on the whole forum - safe, steady, sensible weight loss that involves a life style change with exercise. Being in a state of ketosis for a long time is NOT normal for your body, and wreaks havoc on your gall bladder and kidneys. You will keep the weight off longer by making changes that you can be happy with, long term!

I've tried it. It works. It is a ketogenic diet. Takes discipline...need to prepare meals at home or be very strict when ordering at a restaurant. It is costly about $500/mo. Expect weight loss of about 4-5 pounds weekly (realistically). You wil occasionally plateau. No alcohol.

It is a fad diet that does little for long term health or weight management. Any reasonable Doc will tell you this is not the way to go. unhealthy!!!

our daughter was on the dr Bernstein diet and did work but after with no supervision or guideance she put on more weight than what she was when she first started

So yes diet works must be very regimented and really be able to control cravings

So I'm curious if you reached your goal of 165 lbs on the Dr B program. I would like to loose 80 lbs however concerned about how fast your loosing the weight, How can your body keep up with the sagging skin that will remain unless your going to the gym three times a week. Any thoughts?
