It can't be related to the gall bladder. I had mine out 4-5 years ago and it still is happening to me! :(

I think it is more malted liquor drinks. Which is pretty much anything you drink as far as those prepackaged high-octane drinks go. It hits me in the shoulders really hard especially right by the neck. It goes away after about half an hour or so.

Just came across this thread and thought I would comment - i get severe pain when drinking (not everytime mind) it started it my collar bone, and over a year or so the pain gradually spread - shoudler, neck, back etc - not to worry anyone at all, but to give some form of answer in case it helps anyone - alcohol pain can be a rare but early indicator of lymphoma. I went to my doctors who immediatley questioned cancer and sent me blood tests which came back inconclusive. I was then then referred to haematology. I am just about to go for a chest and collarbone x-ray to check for any sign of early lymphoma that blood tests may not have picked up, and a blood test again, this time including LDH and immunolgobins, as though my initial blood tests didnt show cancer, they showed a few issues that are nothing on their own, but with the pain, need further investigation, again to rule ou early stage lymphoma. I do not wish to startle anyone or worry anyone, but just merely suggest, if the pain is like mine, mention lymphoma to your doctor. It could be many other things, but better to be safe than sorry. All the best to everyone x

Had no idea how common this is. Glad I'm not alone. It happened to me tonight with white wine. It has only happened before with Smirnoff no matter the quantity or type.

I am a 23 year old female and I have been experiencing this shoulder pain from drinking alcohol for around a few years now. I did not previously have any issues associated with drinking. I have noticed that in general, I have an area under my right shoulder blade that is almost always tender to the touch, but does not cause me any pain throughout the day. But when I consume any type of alcohol (I don't drink beer or wine, usually go for harder things like rum, vodka, gin, whiskey, etc.), within 10-20 minutes this area of my shoulder will begin to ache intensely. The best way I can describe it is that it feels like I've been shot with an arrow and it's lodged in between my spine and my right shoulder blade. Massaging it doesn't help at all, and I usually try to remedy the problem by eating, drinking lots of water, and laying down for around 20-30 minutes. The pain will go away until I dare to take another sip of alcohol, and then the pain returns within 10 minutes.

However, I don't ALWAYS get this type of reaction. It only happens about two-thirds of the time that I drink. Sometimes I will be able to drink vodka, rum, etc without experiencing any pain.

So glad to see so many people finally posting on this. I have been experiencing the should pain where the neck and shoulder meet once to twice a year for about 20 years (I average one to two drinks a week). The pain is a warning sign and within minutes i become "drunk," sometimes after a glass, sometimes after just a few sips. Slurred words, unsteady, nauseous. Type of alcohol does not seem to be a factor, it has happened with wine coolers, wine, martinis, margaritias, and harder liquors (always mixed with something, usually carbonated). It has never occured with beer. If I drink or eat anything when this starts, it becomes worse, speeds up the reaction. I usually need 10 to 15 minutes of sitting with my head between my knees to get back to normal. Once I do, I'm completely fine. Originally thought to be an allergic reaction, we discovered in my early 20s that I can not combine alcohol and shellfish. Not eating before hand is a definite factor, but it has happened at least twice on a full stomach. I have been through testing due to the lymphoma connection; thankfully not the cause. The side it happens on is my "bad side" which tightens and tenses just from working on a computer. I regularly see a chiropractor for adjustments and therapy. Between the chiro and family doc, we do believe it is a nerve issue at this point and it's been suggested I have a nerve conduction test, which I haven't done yet. Because it is rare relative to how often I have a drink and has been going one for so long, I'm just very conscious of the signals and of eating beforehand.

I've been getting these symptoms for about three years now, I first started having shoulder and neck tightening when I was 23 I remember the day and drink I had it was a Stella beer and I only took one sip and my neck got so tense I had to stand up and find a way to relieve the pain, it would go away almost as quickly as it came. Last week I had a Jameson and Coke and the first sip I took my body started tightening up and my neck and shoulders started throbbing, I never had this problem when drinking liquor only beer, I stopped drinking beer a while ago because of the pain but now hard liquor is doing this to me? I thought it was because there was gluten in beer and that I could have an allergy but now I'm not so sure about that. I'm glad to see I'm not alone. Hopefully we can get some answers soon

I get the same horrid pain after consuming Ale's, Wine, or Malt liquors. I have not decided why these bother me (I just stay far away). I can drink just about anything else and not have this happen. My doctor told me it is a form of reflux.

If I eat a few pieces of bread before drinking OR after my dumb A** has already drank and the pain is already there. Bottom line is if I eat the bread before I know I am going to drink . . . the pains do not come. It takes a while if I already am in pain and eat the bread . . . usually 10 minutes or so.

I'm experiencing that as I type this. Sometimes a dull ache, sometimes a severe pain that can make me cry. I'll usually have my husband give me a shoulder massage. It happens irregulary, but it's so painful. I have no idea why is happens when I drink. I've only had two Twisted Teas, and I've had plenty to eat, and drank a gallon of water today. It's the most frustrating thing.

Leave juice fellas. I ate two apples today and had that pain. Earlier, it would occur only sometimes after drinking cold juice.

I have had the same problem for years but have been determined to drink wine! I have found the more tannins in the wine the worse it is, also preservatives can be a problem. So I steer clear of most red wine esp. cab sav & Shiraz - Pinot noir is usually ok as the skin is not left in for long. And Australian wines are the worst for me. No problem at all with French champagne. Tonight I had an organic preservative free Aussie Shiraz and my shoulders, neck and jaw seized up...the only thing that releases the tension is ibuprofen. Or something with codeine. No amount of hot baths, massage or heat rubs work!

So weird... The way you describe it! I wanted to trek everyone else, I don't drink often but when I do I prefer liquor: vodka to be exact although it happens with any liquor. Always my right, which I didn't deem significant until reading other people tend to have more pain in their right shoulder...? But definitely both shoulder joints, and I have a high tolerance for pain, so excruciating is accurate.
Anyways... My Bestie used to tell me: then you haven't had enough---drink till you dont feel it! Id laugh, wait and sure enough be okay and continue with however many I wanted, but the pain is always initial, never later!? Interesting to read more people have this! I tend to think it's toxins or
acid build up on the joints! Bad dietary habits!? We all have them more likely than not!
