As far as my experience with Pilonidal cysyts--don't mess with them, sit up straight, and usually excedrine helps but not completely. If they don't drain (which is still uncomfortable) they still really really hurt. I was lucky enough to find Lydoderm patches in the closet, but I'm usually not that lucky. At least it's near your tail bone so you can use that as an excuse!

I found this question and the answers extremely helpful. I have had the same problem in the past and actually had my husband drain the sore a couple years ago. Gross!! Now I have the bump again (and im a new mom of a 5 week old) and am spending ALOT of time sitting (breast feeding). I put the warm wet towel on my butt, and put a heating pad over it to keep it warmer longer. Then I put triple antibiotic cream on it and took a couple extra strength tylenols and went to bed. At the next feeding session (4 hours later) I had totally forgotten that I had the bump and was able to sit comfortably to feed. I continued taking the pain killers, cleaning the site, applying cream, and heating every 6 hours and now (48 hours later) it has gone down significantly and barely sore! I hope this helps anyone out there. The first time this happened to me, it was so embarrassing and I didn't think anyone else could be going through this. Long live Google!!

I'm glad I found this thread! I have this problem right now and I've actually had it once before, about a year or two ago. Before it was relatively small and didn't really impede me in any way, it was just painful to the touch, but I just applied antiseptic cream to it every so often and it went away after a while.

This time it's a lot bigger and a lot more painful, but in the exact same space. I'd been rubbing ibuprofen cream on it before bed every night, which made it less painful, but didn't do an awful lot to get rid of the swelling. Just a couple of hours ago, I felt that there was a "head" on it, so I decided to pop it. Like people have said, a lot of blood and puss came out (really quite disgusting tbh) and the lump is now about half the size. It still hurts a bit, but nowhere near as much. I can sit down and lie on my back now! I'm going to go shower, get some anti-septic cream, and maybe a couple of heat pads and try out the advice that most of you have given.

Thanks very much!

Thought I'd add my two cents to the tale! I can't remember injuring my tailbone or anything like that but I had a slight pain while sitting about three months ago. This remained pretty constant, sometimes I'd forget about it for a week or so before feeling it again until I went on a pretty rough and bumpy car ride with my family. From then on it was absolute hell for two weeks, really bad pain if I sat down/moved and a constant ache otherwise. Doctor didn't even look at it and just told me to take ibuprofen for 2 weeks and come back if it wasn't better. I was pretty furious at the way he just brushed me off but went along with it. For the first 10 days it got worse if anything. On day 11 I noticed I wasn't wincing as much and the pain was much less, on day 12 (which is today) I've not felt any pain at all unless I go out of my way to poke it and even then the pain was less than before. If it's completely gone tomorrow I think I'll forget about the whole ordeal but otherwise I'm going to go back to the doctors and see what happens.

I did notice a small hole near my tailbone but nothing has come out of it so it might just be one of those things.

Stuff that lessened the pain for me:

- Leaning forwards while sitting. This made my lower back ache but took most of the stabbing pain away.

- Warmth. I lay a beddy bear (like a hot water bottle) against my back when I lay down and that would offer me some relief

- Ibuprofen actually did stop the pain for a hour or so, but not for long enough to keep taking it and not feel pain.

- Paracetamol took the edge off the pain and made it easier to sit down

- Solpadeine (Co-Codamol AKA Codeine and Paracetamol) was great but you can't take that stuff for too long as it's addictive.

I recommend you go to the doctor if you have had the pain for any length of time as from my limited experience it won't get better on it's own. You could also have a look at your backside and see if you can spot a tiny hole/any redness (a sign of a cyst!)

Get some paw paw cream and rub it on it, worked for me

Do you know if the tailbone cyst is directly related to your HSV2? I never thought about that. Mine started out as just a dark spot/bruise, i've had it for as long as I can remember (I'm a dancer so bruises are pretty common, especialy in weird places!) but within the past year or so the dark spot/bruise has become raised & occassionally filled with pus/blood. I was also diagnosed with HSV2 a little over a year ago, the two never connected in my mind. My spot on my tailbone isn't really painful.. just similar to a pimple at times & it usually gets 'bad' (raised, swollen, filled with gunk) every couple of months, if that.

Please let me know if you found out it's directly related to HSV2! (I'm on the daily medication for it since I have never, that I know of, had an outbreak so this information is very important to me!)

Did it ever end up draining? I have the same thing but I've had it for about a month now. It felt as if it was going away but recently it got a bit bigger, and small again, it just changes sizes but still no draining, sometimes it feels itchy.

I had this, and I'm telling you right now if I was you I would go and get it cut out straight away. Im a sook and didn't and the pain was horrible I would rather brake my arm have tonsillitis and a punding head ache then ever have the pain of an abscess again! It started as a tiny little lump. Was so tiny but sore.. I ignored it and just felt with the strange pain. It then started to get bigger and bigger and more painful and I went to the doctors. She said I can't believe you left it so long and she put me on antibiotics and called the emergency surgery department and booked me into get surgery! I told her I wasn't going and I hate hospitals. And she told me how bad it would get but I thought I knew best. As the days went on I was laying in pain crying constantly on pain killers so I was constantly knocking myself out so I couldn't feel the pain. I then woke up one night and it had weaped. I got up and cleaned it with cotton buds and salt in warm water. I lightly cleaned it as the pain was just I can't even describe the pain! I then took my drugs and fell back asleep when I decided to go back to the doctors It then had got to the stage where I couldn't walk.. I held off the doctors and look more pain killers. As I came close to finishing my antibiotics the pain started to get better I could do alot more and it drain heaps everyday I don't know where all that puss and blood came from. A few weeks went on I stopped wearing pad/bandage things because it stopped weaping and it was still there but not painful. I could walk and do eveything normal again with no pain. A week went by and I was at my friends and I felt something wet.. I jumped up And the last of it popped it was like water! But it instantly went down. It was then 2 and a half weeks after it had gone and it flared up again and then there was a tiny lump again not in the same spot but about 3 inches higher. It started all over again I still have had it removed if I get it again I will because I wouldn't be able to deal with the pain again!! PLEASE FOR YOUR SAKE GET IT CUT OUT IF YOU ARNT A p***y LIKE ME. Because its actually a sack.. And when they cut the sack out the will show you.. It looked like a tear drop with fluid inside!! GET IT REMOVED THE PAIN IS UNDESCRIBALE !! I hope this helped

I have this problem also. When this acts up for me I get a couple of bumps in my crack near my upper tailbone. There about the size of the tip of a Q-tip.

What I do to help treat this is, wipe the bumps with Witchhazel (an antiseptic) and apply Xylocain (an Analgesic), which comes in a tube. It comes in Jelly  or ointment form. I prefer the ointment form it sticks better to the skin. Also it comes in 2% and 5%. I am in Canada and you do not need a persciption for this, but you do have to ask the pharmacist for it, its not on the shelf. It really helps with the itching Its about $15. Eventually the blister things open and the witchhazel does sting but the Xylocain takes the stinging away. My problem usually clears up by a week or week and a half.

I apply this stuff around three times a day. Baths help too! I use epson salts in mine.

At least I can go to sleep and work in peace.

Hope this helps!
