I had this from 2011 to 2014 june. In between i did all tests and wore holter monitor with no diagnosis. I am a man of faith, a Christian so i prayed about it and dicided i was going to ignore it, take the risk and start regular 30mins daily on threadmill. It threatened severally but i was even more frustrated by the low quality of life i was living with it so i continued. By december i forgot i had those symptoms and when i counted back it was already 6months gone. Today its 2yrs plus. All glory to God almighty.

Try an anti depressant. It helped me with severe physical symptoms of anxiety. I believe, for me, they calmed my nervous system down.

I have had this feeling for a couple years now. I get them (or notice) them more at night. I also get a snapping/popping sensation in my sternum area. I have mentioned this to many Drs and my cardiologist and after many workups they find nothing. I also just had Catheter Ablation surgery for A-Fib. All is well there but since that surgery a month ago the spasms have increased. I was told that things will be inflamed for up to 3 months. I am 63 and I always worry it's my heart although there is no evidence. I am seeing my cardiologist next week for a follow up and am going to mention this again.
This feeling is very scary and so annoying. I myself think it's trapped gas in my sternum as the sensation decreases if I can move and expel some gas. Sometimes taking GasX helps. Anyways a search to find the real cause continues.

Hi, im 24yo male with proportional weight n height. Im indonesian btw so please pardon my poorly english. I already experienced it from 2013. I remembered that time i was warming up my bike in the morning to go to college then all of the sudden i felt this "shocking" feeling inside my chest, and i was like "wooowww, what was that" and that was the first ever. okay, and life goes on. It was pretty rare that this spasm happens back then untill this couple 6 month. It's become more vigourous and often, im counting 3-4 times a day on average could be more and could be not happening for like 2 days (still very minor/mild spasm occured but not bothered me) than come back again. i too suffered from severe anxiety n gerd problem since 2011. I wondering have you guys ever read about Heart Anxiety Neurosis? somehow i think it related since everybody that go through several clinical test only to find out that they're in tip top shape. oh, and i want to know what's going on to you that ever post in this forum from a years or month ago, any relief yet? Im dying to know since it depressed me sooooo much, and ruin my productive year ;(

That post from the medical student was excellent and very reassuring. The techniques recommended I will try if spasm occurs again. Not a very nice feeling and mine can happen in places and in crowds. I too am on omperazole and maybe its causing it. Going to try centrum silver vitamin as recommended in an earlier thread.

I'm only 15 and I'm feeling the spasming in my chest; it feels like my heart is almost in the wrong spot, and like there is an air pocket near it. The first time I felt it, it felt like my heart beat a couple times vertically, almost up into my throat. Now I'm just lying in bed and I'm feeling like my chest is very light and like I need to burp or something, but I can't. I'm about as healthy as a 15-year-old can get, as far as we know, but I do have depression and anxiety (diagnosed, taking fluoxetine). I scanned this thread and found that most people experiencing this were 20+ years older than me and it raised concern. Someone let me know if this is anything very out of the ordinary for my age, and if I should see a doctor? Thank you!

I got rid of a lifetime of panic attacks when I read one of Claire Weekes books. Unbelieveable. Simply note all your symptoms-tingling hands-dizzy-breathlessness-pounding heart-utter fear and just realise, although very unpleasant, none of them will do you any harm. Your heart could race for a week without harm. It is the FEAR of having a panic attack that brings it on,so the trick is to remember the above and stop being FEARFUL. That's all you need. You are now in charge. Say to yourself,
"come on panic attack: I'm not scared of you any more--do your worst"
The tiger you struggled with for so long has gone.
The cause of the symptoms is adrenaline release due to fear, but knowing that is of no importance to you anymore as you have got the cure.

This sounds like a PVC, or premature ventricular contraction. I had them and didn't know about it until an echocardiogram that showed all fine but these PVC's. My doctor said she has gotten them every few beats since college. Shortly after finding out what they were I started getting them a lot more. I was diagnosed with mild sleep apnea and got a CPAP which seems to have reduced them to just a few a day. I can't say for sure that the CPAP was the solution as it wasn't immediate but it did make a difference.

Your probably fine.. best to see a doctor if its concerning enough but from reading most of this and dealing with this problem myself (25yrs old) I can pretty much guarantee that this is just a consequence of having anxiety disorder. Ive been mostly healthy my whole life (smoked the last couple years) but regularly exercised and only been to the hospital one time but this summer suddenly out of nowhere I had two intense anxiety attacks brought on by stress from external factors in my life. Although ive learned a lot about anxiety since, and have been able to shut down any further attacks, I still get a number of spasms at completely random times throughout the day, most but not all of them are located in middle chest just below the sternum. The other half of the time the spasms occur in my legs more often if I am laying down.

Its certainly no coincidence half the people who have posted also mentioned they have had panic attacks or anxiety. Otherwise this could be a result of a pinched nerve but I find it unlikely considering people are experiencing these both at rest aswell as during exercise, sitting, laying down ect.

When I first got the anxiety attacks I didnt want to believe that my doctors diagnosis was actually what I was experiencing as it seemed much worse than "just" anxiety. Its been about 6 months and the spasms come and go with no rhyme or reason but dont seem to ever escalate, progress or get worse.
The only thing that I am ever sure of is that as soon as I lay down to sleep I will experience these spasms without fail almost everytime.

Good luck everyone, but I do really believe that this is a harmless physical symptom of anxiety and nothing to worry too much about.

So glad I found this thread too. I am a 64 yr old male in good health except acid reflux that I take omniprazole for. Also Lexipro for anxiety/panic which I've had all my life That being said, for the past 8 months I get woken up usually around 2-3am with what feels like a twist or spasm in my esophogus sternum area. Sometimes shortness of breath. That is scary in the dark in the middle of the night and can cause me to have a panic attack. Talked to my gastroentologist and he thinks it is a esophageal spasm. We did another endoscopy and looks good except for reflux. So he has given me a stronger reflux med called Ditalin. He told me to take it mid day so it lasts thru the night. This has helped quite a bit, but last night I woke up with the sensation again but not as severe. I find if I eat after 9pm thats when I have trouble. All I can do is keep a watch on it and talk to the Dr again, but I feel it is an esophageal spasm that is somehow connected to my lungs/breath and maybe a stronger med or taking it later at night might help more. I have never had them any other time but at night when I'm laying down.

wow! I have expierenced the exact issues! I get the sternum twitches which wake me and the SOB I find that a dose of Xanax is the only thing to alleviate the symptoms. First time it happened I was sure it was a heart attack. But if I can go to the couch and flip on the tube until I dose off, it's not a heart attack. I've had a VERY stressful 2016 and 2017 is doing ok that's why I don't know why I keep getting these. I know no one wants to take meds unnecessarily but if you can hold out till the night before your day off from work and pop one then really sleep in, it helps a lot. I'm not going to get all preachy here but I'm one of Jehovah's Witnesses and When I'm stressed I go to JWdotOrg and listen to a bible recording or Dramatic bible reading and that helps me. Try not to watch tv the bright light makes things worse. If you're not a religious person maybe a nice audio book about something you enjoy. Hope everyone finds some relief.

I have them in the left chest area and the back also. They reel as if they burst. It's very uncomfortable, but not painful. I have had ekg, telemetry, they watched me for 3 hours and once it was pvc's and the other times, nothing was visible on the heart monitor. I was told that they are harmless.

I am 15 right now and I feel that I am having the same issue. I feel an empty feeling inside of my chest area and then it goes away without any pain. My symptoms are at the worst at night. Once, I had to be sent to the ER because I had an attack after an attack. I don't think it is PVC because I don't have an extra heartbeat and the ER. I don't think it is anxiety either because I haven't been under another stress already. I heard magnesium deficiency but I'm ruling that out because I eat cereal almost every day and I bring yogurt to lunch every other day. My doctor prescribed me Motrin but I have to eat it with a meal and a little bit of Xanax. She also said that I have to drink 8 glasses of water a day and to not drink any juice. Drinking water helped me but when I reverted to my old lifestyle, the spasms came back. Can anyone help me to see what is wrong?
