I had my gall bladder removed in October of 2003. Since then I have only had 2 "attacks" that I can remember that felt just like a gall bladder attack. The most recent one was last night. I still have some discomfort in my sternum. On both occasions I had taken medication that had Codeine in it. I'm convinced that I should not be taking anything with Codeine but can't seem to find anything official. I guess I'll be calling my doctor to confirm that.
Your story is almost identical to mine! Had my surgery last Tuesday and one week later (last night) I had spaghetti and marinara sauce. An hour later I was in ER. I completely freaked out because I didnt think it could be a gallstone attack cause I had no gallbladder so I thought I was having some complication from the surgery and was dying, heh, I laugh now. Anyway, I am wondering how you are doing now, if you've had the same problem since.
Thank you, Sarah
Thank you, Sarah
Wow, I am so glad that this is happening to someone else! Sorry! Has anyone noticed attacks after taking Tylenol?
I had my GB removed in June '08- 2 weeks after it was removed the pain came rite back and I ended up in the ER. Of course the Dr's all thought i was crazy- how can you be having a GB attack when its no longer there? After some lab work and a CT scan... nothing.. So home i went. About a week later I was back in the ER this time labs were off so they admitted me and i finally ended up with a Dr that wasn't a complete m***n. He decided to do an ERCP and found an extremely large stone and some sludge in my bile duct and was shocked it wasn't visible on the ct scan. Everything was removed and the next morning I was rushed down to xray. My labs were WAY off and it turned out that i actually had some sort of blood clot where they removed the stone. Soooo 8 ERCP's and 4 bile duct stents later I'm still in pain, still vomitting.. Was even checked for Sphyncter of Oddi dysfunction.. but that was inconclusive. I was sent to a pain management Dr & given a crazy supply of percocet- no thanks, I have an 11 month old daughter and cant be drugged up all the time! I found a new Dr in NYC and he has reviewed and exepted my "case" and will be seeing him this Wed. I'm sorry that you all are feeling the same as me, but its nice to know I'm not alone. I refuse to give up and live in pain for the rest of my life, I just hope someone can figure out the problem soon
I have the same issues as mentioned about almost 2 years post surgery. My Chiro says that they will continue due to food allergies. As they can throw the liver into spasms. I am looking into allergy testing to see if this holds any water. Would explain why some things set off some and not others.
I also had my Gall Bladder removed a few years ago and have had the most excruciating sternum (also right side of chest) pain that started the second day after surgery. The last one which was this past week. It may be my imagination but it seems to occur within a 12-24 hour time period after taking prescription pain killers (for my back). I have tried Hydrocodone, Oxycodone and Tramadol (not all at the same time). I will maybe take one or two tablets a week to take the edge off but usually within the next day or so I have an attack that is so bad I could go to the ER but suffer through it. I get the cold sweats, can't breath and an immediate headache with these bouts. I have had an upper GI and and MRI but nothing was found. Has anyone else experienced these symptoms and was there any relief? Thanks.
I had my Gall Bladder removed in 2007 and have had nothing but troubles!! After my surgery it took months before I could sleep on either sides of my body at night; the only position I could lay was flat on my back. I continue to have pain in my upper right abdomen since my surgery. I have had 3 attacks that were worse than anything I ever had before surgery! The last attack I had was after I took Hydrocodone for a migraine. I have wondered if that's what triggered it.
My first attack was within weeks of my surgery in the middle of the night, it scared me to death!! It was the worst pain I have ever had (other than childbirth). They all seem to last about 30 to 45 minutes. I sweat all over my heart rates goes through the roof and I just roll around on the floor crying and hardly breathing. The second one happened at work and I had a co worker drive me to the hospital. By the time they got me checked in the pain had subsided. They did an EKG, CT Scan, and blood work and found nothing!
The third one was just a month ago. several hours after taking Hydrocodone (which I never take!) I am convinced that the hydrocodone triggered something. The attacks all seem to last about the same amount of time, and I live in constant fear of the next one.
I won't even mention what it has done to my bowels!
I have been seeing a GI specialist, and have had a scope, another CT scan, blood work, upper GI and they find nothing. I know I am not crazy after finding so many people that have the same problems. I am sorry to know that there are so many that suffer with me; but, it is also comforting to know that I am not alone or crazy. If anyone has any answers please let me know!!

I am thankful to have found this. I don't know why but it's comforting to know I'm not crazy. I just had my gallbladder out on 09/18/09 and was doing amazing. I had almost no pain except some shoulder pain. I even went back to work on Monday 09/21/09 but I think I may have done too much too soon. I ate a big dinner that night consisting of lemon peppered chicken (about a chicken breast worth) and rice with brocli and cheese. It was instant stuff but it was low fat so I thought I would be okay.
The problem was that I ate too much, too late at night I think. I had what I swear was a gallbladder attack at about midnight. It was painful mostly when I laid down but standing or sitting up seemed to help. I took a pain pill and it went away for about 15 minutes, then came back for a bit. I finally took 1 tums in the morning for the indigestion and I'm just now feeling better. I'm praying that I'm okay and don't need to go in for more procedures. I will be watching my diet like a hawk from now on, thats for sure.

I have had my GB removed on Aug 14. 3 day's later, I felt a sharp pain under my sternum and it would last for at least 5-10 minutes, sometimes more. I've never felt this pain before, not even before my GB was removed. It's now a daily thing. I usually get these pains in the middle of the night (always around 3-4am) and in the early mornings (6-7am). I am debilitated by the pain; I can't moved, no position makes it feel better, and I am short of breath. The pain is so intense, it can draw tears sometimes. The only times it's lasted longer is when I went to the Hospital on two occasions, and they gave me morphine and hydromorphone to relax the pain. Those only made them 10x worse and the pain lasted for hours.
My sister suffered for years after Gallbladder removal. Her doc said it was phantom pains. Years later, she finally consulted another doctor. He did not believe in phantom pains after gallbladder surgery. He went in again and found a Stone in her Bile Duct that was left where previous surgeon did not catch. Had it removed and has been better ever since. You must be your own advocate. You know your body and what is right and not right. If no help from your doctor, seek another doctor. Best of luck to all....
I had my gallbladder removed a year ago after a series of nasty attacks. I've found that if I take any medications on anything less than a full stomach I can get severe pain. Codeine is out entirely for me, I have been told by several doctors that some people are unable to process it very well after gallbladder removal and I have had severe abdomen pain on occasions where I had taken it. I know better now!
I had my Gallbladder out in 2007 and to this day I get these pains as well sometimes I can go a good while without having any pains but, once in awhile I get them and they are so bad it puts me in tears and it hurts to move! :'( I can usually feel it coming on..it will start in my stomach as a tightness and bloating and then it slowly creeps into my chest and then into my shoulders and back...its horriable!! I just wish I knew WHY this happend and what is it? I also get really clamy feeling like a cold sweat...I just had it twice yesterday evening..first one lasted about 40 min and the second maybe 20 min with in a few hours..I have noticed when I feel it coming on SOMETIME eatting a cracker or piece of bread helps..I also noticed throwing up at the first sign helps sometimes and its nothing but pure stomach bile im throwing up...I have been on nexium and other meds and nothing has seemed to really truely work...the drs even look at me like im crazy while im trying to explain to them what I feel..I was even in the ER once for diffrent abd pain and the pain hit me out of no where and they hooked me up EKG machine and of course it wasnt my heart and I tried telling them that but, they didnt know WHY I had that pain..they thought maybe a anxiety attack? I knew it had to with my Gallbladder being removed and the stomach bile..I just want to know why this happends and is there ANYTHING out there to help it??? Will we ever find a doctor who will listen to us and help get to the bottom of this?? Good luck to everyone dealing with this and God Bless!!! I know how you all feel! :-(

I know this post is older but I hope someone is still following it. I too have had this same problem. My Gallbladder was removed in Jan. of this year, 2011. I have had this happen two times in this past week. I am experiencing all of the same symptoms as everyone else. My question is: Do you have bad bloating and gas the next day? Also I have been taking a cough syrup that has codeine in it. I read online that this can cause an attack in someone that has had the gallbladder removed. Thanks for any reply and I hope we can all get some help with this issue.
