It is not uncommon for a bit of old blood that is left over from your previous menstrual cycle to find its way into your cervical mucus. In other women, blood in the cervical mucus can be very common, and a sign that she bleeds just a little whenever she ovulates. Blood in the cervical mucus can also indicate a ruptured follicle. In more rare cases, blood in the cervical mucus can indicate trauma to the cervix, whether through an infection or even from sexual intercourse. Blood in your cervical mucus could also be implantation bleeding.

Implantation bleeding is a small amount of bleeding in the uterus that occurs when the egg implants into the uterus. A specific tissue, known as trophoblast, develops from the fertilized egg and it surrounds it. It is what attaches the egg to the inside of the uterus, and actually eats its way into the uterus. The trophoblast actually pulls the egg to the inside of the endometrium. Trophoblast even invades the mother’s blood vessels and diverts her blood to the fertilized egg. Sometimes, this blood will leak and this causes implantation bleeding. This implatation bleeding can show up in your cervical mucus.

In any case, blood in your cervical mucus is probably nothing to be worried about. If the bleeding is particularly heavy or doesn’t stop, you should contact your health care provider to make sure that the bleeding is not indicative of a larger problem.

This was very informative.  Thank you.  However, I have been having this light bleed for 5 weeks.  no insurance, and the clinic doesn't have a gyno.  its so light that it mainly happens when I use the restroom.  Any other ideas, oh, and I had a tubaligation 4 years ago.

Hi! I'm 20 yrs old and recently I had this strange clump of mucus like blood. I was worried so I called my gynecologist and she said its normal.
It's just a large clump or clot of endometrial lining. The lining breaks down over time, and the intracellular liquid leaks out. What gets left behind is cell goo that clumps together. It's a bit harder to shed, so the uterus has to cramp down harder to do the job, and you of course feel stronger cramps as a result.
I hope this is helpful! :)

I am 14 and having this same problem. This month is the first time it has happened. What is happening is i have no blood on my pad and i am having clumps of a weird mucus mixed with pieces of blood. The only conclusion i could come to was because I am on the pill. This is the first time i have had my period since I started the pill so I think that may be the reason.

I'm 17, this is my first period since going on the pill and I am having the same problem, it must just be our bodies adjusting to the change in hormones.

Mucus mixed with menstrual blood is the result of heavy cervical discharge, which has a thicker, mucus-y texture. It's nothing to worry about unless you've found or suspect other changes within your body. The cervix constantly produces this discharge (not mixed with blood) and during your period it can be slightly aggravated by tampons (if applicable) and even just the movements and actions of your uterus contracting to expel your flow.
Unless you've noticed something different- foul odor, itching or burning, or other discomforts, do not feel pressured to see your gynecologist immediately. Just mention it at your next visit for some peace of mind.

this is exactly what i am experiencing at the moment, had this dark red mucus discharge and i was delayed 2 days from my period. the discharge only happened twice today after i wipe a tissue after peeing. This past few weeks i was experiencing pregnancy symptoms and took 3 hpt which were neg. i guess this is just an effect of hormonal imbalance from my evra patch.

This is exactly the same thing that is happening to me. Im 15 going on 16, never had my period. It was only when i got home from horseriding that i noticed this red mucas in my underwear, I wasnt sure if it was my usual discharge mixed with the chance of some of my hymen breaking (horseriding) or my first period. This was yesterday, but nothing comes up on my pads, I only know it there because it appears when I wipe. Its red, slight brown tinge if you look at it in the light. PLEASE HELP!!!!

I'm also experiencing this. I'm only 22. I have had irregular periods my entire life, I can have a period every month for 6 months, or only have 1 a year, it's very strange. My last period was in September, and in the middle of December I experienced what you guys were talking about, and it's started again now, only 2 weeks later. I'm so confused. It's not even enough to wear a pad or tampon, but it's consistently every day for 5-7 days.
