I'm curious as to if you ever got off the shot. I know your post is very old but I relate to it most because it has been 15 years that I've been on it. It's been 2 weeks since my scheduled shot & I feel like death. Does it get better? How long does it last? Do you ever lose the weight or feel better? I was gonna try the patch but now I don't know....

I am glad you mentioned the crazy dreams. I have been off Depo for 3 weeks now and I have been having insane dreams , and in the past I have never had a dream I could recall. I also have extremely sore and enlarged breasts , moodiness , head pressure and migraines and the past two days have been filled with nausea. I can't even eat , there is no desire . I am also losing weight fast back to where I was my entire adult life. I am 28 and was on Depo for 2 years.

Hi all,

I'm interested in hearing about contraceptive options after coming off the depo?

My son was born when I was a nieve 19, after which began to use the Nuva Ring for just less than 2 years, but didn't feel confident that I could be protected by it. So, being a little useless at remembering to take regular antibiotics at the correct times, etc. didn't even consider the pill.

I began the depo and continued untli the end of 2013. My next injection was due at the beginning of February '14, but as I'm not currently in a relationship decided not to continue, and to give my body a break. Concerning the depo, I have nothing negative to say about it. I experienced no side effects, despite being period-free for years (with the odd spotting but bever more than a few hours each 4-6 months). I count this as a blessing. Although my libido pretty much disappeared for the past 2 years, I'm not sure if this was cuased by the depo or the boyfriend at the time ;)

So now, it is about 6 weeks since my depo was due. I have had spotting (as is usual for me now, a couple of hours one day but nothing worth mentioning). This was about two weeks ago, so one month after the injection was due.

I do have sensitive nipples, something I never had before, for the past two weeks or so. This is different, and a new experience but I can't say it is painful. Unfortunately, I cannot say that my boobs have suddenly enlarged, as others have mentioned. (I wish!!!)

I do find I have a serious desire to resurrect my sex life all of a sudden, but I'm not acting on that for the time being. While I am certainly intent on giving my body at least a 6 month break from chemicals, I am curious to find out the methods available to someone who has used the depo for so long.

My own doctor has told me the mirena and the bar are my only options, and I am not keen on either of those. I did go for a second opinion, but was told the exact same thing.

Ladies, if anyone has come off the depo, and has had this conversation with their doctor, please reply and let me know about the options. It is not something you can easily find through google.

And I am also planning to have a bone density test within the next month :) as is advised...

I'm so glad to see this thread! I took drop in my teens and had no issues. I have two children, the youngest is 5. My husband and I have used condoms since he was born. I found out I was going to need the anthrax vaccines before spending a year away from my family. I started depo to prevent pregnancy and potential birth defects. The next month, I had a 40ish day period. I left for my assignment prior to my next dose, and seeing as I'm abstinent, opted not to get the next dose. My period returned two months later, but wasn't heavy or regular. Now four months later, I'm having pregnancy symptoms, but haven't had intercourse.

Quick response. Have been on it once for 2 years and off for 18 months. Period came back after 18 months, then I went back ON for 8 years. Still no period back after 7 months BUT returned libido and lubrication at last!!

I've been on depo for 17 years and I love it! I've had none density test done and everything is fine. I don't plan to have anymore children so I see no reason to stop it.

I have been on and off depo for 12 yrs now. I love not having my period! No weight gain for me, nor headaches, nor cramps, but it did affect my sex drive and slight bone density loss, but i fixed that with calcium supplements. I just got off of it this past June and am waiting on my body to rebalance itself and for my period to return. I have noticed an increase in breast size and some tenderness, and my sex drive is coming back (at 39yrs old my fiance and i are glad its coming back). Sorry to hear many of u had bad experiences. Everyone of us women is unique and beautiful. Best of luck and good health to u all

I am 36 and have been on Depo since I was 19 -/+. I love not having a period & do not plan on having children, which is why I have been on it so long. Now, I have gone off the Depo before (& only for a short period of time) each time I have experience the same side effects...sore breasts, some muscle ache, light acne, mood swings, increased irritability & heavy periods (for the 1st few days). Most of these side effects lasted for 1-2 weeks, and I found ways to cope with them.
Estroven. Black Cohosh. Ibuprofen. Heating pads and hot Epsom salt baths for the muscle aches / sore breasts. I've even gone as far as using Epsom salt muscle rub & Aspercream muscle rub to help ease the soreness. (I'm sure this is not recommended, but when in desperation...)
