7 weeks ago I woke in the middle of the night with a huge amount of pain like I had badly torn a groin muscle. I have been put on antti-inflammatories and panadeine forte since then as the pain started down my right knee and right ankle and sore lower back. my blood results came back first time that I was slightly anaemic but iron levels fine and inflammation levels high. Second test anaemia was gone but inflammation still high. Dr advised me to see physio as my lower back also started hurting. Physio advised I have a lumbar bulging disc above my saccrum and sciatica, but that still does not explain the inflammation. I had also thought that I had slept wrong about 2 weeks ago when my shoulders and around my collar bones but the pain is still there as well as upper back pain. Even on anti inflammatories the inflammation in my knee and ankle is still very present and mainly affects me in the evening, night and morning, to the point sometimes I cannot stand on them. Dr has sent me for xrays on lumbar spine and knee but showed nothing. Physio has told me I will have to go for CT Scan.

I am 27 yo female with 4 young children, happily married for 5 years and so over feeling like I've been hit by a truck. I have had no previous health issues and need answers so I can enjoy my kids growing up unmedicated.

it might be Lymphedema?
you should ask the doctor about it

If your inflammatory markers are high, maybe you need to see a rheumtologist? I am not entirely clear about this, and all the doctors I have asked aren't 100% either, but the view from my rheumatologist is that if your CRP/ESR is up, then either you have been ill or have some arthitic problem. She doesn't think that a physical trauma or injury would result in high inflammatory markers....

I had arthroscopy 5 weeks ago to repair a minor tear in my meniscus (not causing a great deal of pain, but just a niggle). Turns out there was no tear (so no repair done), but the trauma of the surgery seems to have set off an arthritic reaction - so 5 weeks on I still can't bend beyond 90 degrees and no one can help! The surgeon won't talk to me - I just get his receptionsist telling me to keep trying to do the exercisese he told me to do. Increasingly I find that if you have something that is even slightly out of teh ordinary, you struggle to get doctors to understand and look into it properly - they just keep sending you for tests and just look at the results of the last test instead of building up a picture of what is going on....

Good luck :-)

Seems as though maybe I have psoriatic arthritis but Dr has sent me to rheumatologist for his opinion

Have you or your doctor considered ankylosing spondylitis? See http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmedhealth/PMH0001457/
The symptoms sound similar.... A colleague of mine has it, and you would not guess - he leads a pretty much normal life!

The condition is not like mine. Both my knees are swollen with only minimal arthritis, and both ankles. They all stay swollen all the time as they have done for several years. Nothing makes the swelling go down; I have had diuretics and herbal remedies but nothing makes any difference. It is not allergy, nor caused by the arthritis and there doesn't appear to be any other cause.

No difference for me as well, I'm 33 yr old and very recently I started getting ankle swelling, pain and stiff, couldn't able to walk. Had x-rays and blood tests and everything is normal, but not sure why this is occuring, this is fourth time in three months period. Does any have any remediation from this? It would be greateful if there is any sremediation.

If you're female, i suggest do Hpv test and follow up with a doctor and definitely ask for cervical cancer. I have diagnosed with positive Hpv eventhough my every pap test came negative and i have been experiencing swollen knee for no reason. Hope this help and wish you all the best.

My left knee is swollen so huge and painful right now.  My last major knee swelling was 2 1/2 yrs ago.  I never know when either knee will flare up.  This has been ongoing for 13 years now.  I am a 38 yr old female.  I have been to every kind of Dr. and speciaist out there, with no explanation.  Have no knee injuries.  I have had every test done, but obviously something is amiss.  I want to get it drained just to relieve the pressure, but it will just end up swelling back up again.  I am very discouraged and wish I knew what the problem was.  My grandma had knee swelling issues and eventually had both knees replaced.  I am very healthy and have no health issues.

I've got a swollen left knee, left big toe, and incredible back pain.  I am HLA-B27 positive, which for you, dcboyer02 could very well explain both your swelling (ankylosing spondilitis) and the uvitis. Apart from that gene, my MRI, xrays, blood tests and ultrasound have shown up nothing even though my knee has now been swollen consistently for six months. I'm going to have a joint scan using nuclear substances - this is probably the next step.  Anti-inflammatories keep the swelling at bay.

I have similar symptoms as well and three weeks ago I went to the doctor. As many of you were, I was tested for all kinds of things. They found that I have Parvovirus and it cause joint pain and swelling. Apparently it can last for weeks, months, and even years. I am now told to see a rheumatologist but my appointment is a month away. We will see what happens but I hope he/she can help.

I have a 13 year old daughter who experienced severe knee pain while in school that knocked her to the ground. She could not get back up due to the pain. Her knees are now swollen and she is still not able to bear weight on her knees.  I have taken her to her Dr. who sent her for blood work and xrays.  We are still waiting on results but it's worrying me on what it could be. Any suggestions?

Hi, the first response to this topic provided me with enough information to recognize what I think I have and the cause behind it.

"Reiter's Syndrome" - What is it? Reiter’s syndrome is an arthritis that produces pain, swelling, redness and heat in the joints. It can also affect other parts of the body, and may lead to inflammation of the eyes, urinary tract and skin. This syndrome is sometimes called a “reactive arthritis” which means that the arthritis occurs as a reaction to an infection elsewhere in the body. Why does it occur? The exact cause of Reiter’s syndrome is unknown. It often begins following a bacterial infection in the intestine (Salmonella, Shigella, Campylobacter or Yersinia).

Last Sunday I developed an intense swelling in my knee for absolutely no reason. I am a runner, and thought I must have injured my knee, but didn't know how as I hadn't felt an injury occur and had not had a previous injury from my running. The swelling has been ongoing now for a week and causing me to be almost unable to walk. Ice, rest etc has not alleviated the swelling at all. The swelling is bilateral which means it is not isolated to a particular area, rather it moves all over the knee. The knee is twice its normal size.

Then I read about "Reiter's Syndrome" - 2 weeks prior to my knee swelling up I was bedridden with a terrible bout of viral gastrointeritis. One minute I was in peak health, the next, very sick with this infection causing intense diarrhea. This fits the profile of "Reiter's syndrome" - 1-3% of people can develop reactive arthritis following a bout of bacterial infection.

It took me a full week to recover from the viral gastrointeritis. Another week to recover from the weakness and weight loss. During this period I did not exercise (which is unusual for a runner but I was so sick I was unable to). However, I did have one run at the end of the second week (2 days prior to the swelling) which made me think that the swelling had been caused by an injury resuming the running too soon. Now I know that this has not been the case.

I will see the doctor tomorrow and intend to advise on this forum whether my "self-diagnosis" has been correct.

Certainly, for all reading these posts, I empathise as it is upsetting and terribly sad to be writing this and I know you all share my feelings.  During my bout of gastrointeritis I told myself each day that my good health would resume and that the virus was temporary, but never in my wildest dreams did I think it would lead to a form of arthritis. For a 48 year old woman in excellent health, who runs regularly and participates in 10 - 14K events, this has certainly been a bitter pill to swallow, but I'm trying to remain positive and tell myself that with time, this will go away and I hope to run and be in better health once again.
