Is your boyfriend allergic to anything? Does he have any other symptoms beside that? If not, i recommend that he gets tested asap. Allergies only get worse in time.
On the other hand, it could be because his eye muscle got strained. Has he been working long hours in front of computer screen, tablet or any other screen? I remember having those symptoms when i started working full time job in front a computer. I had to get glasses with anti-reflexive coating.
