This happens to me quite often as a reaction to cold; the knuckles would seem swollen, red, and itchy. It was hard to place why it was happening, because the extra blood in the area usually made it feel warm locally, but I realized my hands would be cold around the knuckle. Not saying this is necessarily what is happening to you, but it could be related. The itchiness and redness typically lasted long after my hands warmed up.

I am a 41 year old female and I have the same thing. The joints in my fingers and toes will itch. Sometimes its for just a few minutes...sometimes longer. In fact a joint on my left foot is working on 20 mins, as we speak.

At first when it all began...oh I think a year ago, I was mystified. I live in Wyoming, our climate is very dry, so itching is nothing. But no amount of hand lotion would make the itching go away. After a while I began to realize that the itching was not coming from my skin, it was coming from INSIDE of the joint. I also noticed a connection between the itching and the pain I would feel in the joint the next day.

I did mention it to my regular doctor without much response. I mentioned it to a rheumatologist last week without much response.

I have been tested multiple times for Rheumatoid arthritis and it's always come back negative. I've also been tested for gout. Also negative.

I only wanted to throw my thoughts out because I don't want anyone out there to feel like they are the only ones with these symptoms.

I find that there is almost nothing more frustrating than trying to look up symptoms, figuring out what in the heck is going on with your body and it seems that no one else has experienced what you have.

I don't know of any cures, I just wanted to share.

FYI: I have not found any correlation between the food I eat or the cold.

Also there is no particular joint that this happens with. It's gone through every finger and toe joint on both sides of the body.

I have the same exact symptoms in my little finger. Did you get any answers?

This happens to me when I eat wheat. If I stay off all wheat products I don't get swollen, itchy joints. Very simple.

Again, this is just to join in and share my experience. I have no solutions to offer. When I was about 26 (around 1980, so you can tell how old I am) I first had red, swollen, painful and itchy knuckles and also, but to a lesser extent, toes. I had tests done for arthritus. All was negative. I was at the time prescribed ibuprofane, which reduced the symptoms. After about 4 months the symptoms finally went away. They then returned a few months later, but to a lesser degree, stayed a couple of months, went away, came back again, etc, etc, in gradually lengthening cycles and reducing severity. The whole thing lasted a few years until I was around 33. I kept a diary about it at the time. At the end, it was very minor and happened about twice per year. I tried all the faddy remedies (cider vinegar and honey drinks were big at the time!), changes of eating habits, medicines, with no effect. Since then I have never had any problems - - until 4 days ago, when it has come back (at the age of 62) with a certain virulence. Strange. I am not intending to go to a doctor right away.

Been dealing with this for five years. Middle of the night burning sensation on hands around knuckles starts. Then bumps form and are really itchy. Lasts for about a week. Dermatologists just kept giving me cortisone (didn't work) and saying it's a contact dermatitis or eczema. I kept a food diary and did elimination. It is wheat for me. If I travel out of country I am fine. Did research and there are a lot of things we Americans do with our wheat crops that are banned in every other country. My issue is most likely a reaction to chemicals, as opposed to gmo, etc.

My sister had surgery for swollen knuckles resulting from rheumatoid arthritis. What is this discharge that she described as green, and looks like small lima beans?

My finger knuckles are very dry and turning white. It seems like there is no skin on the ends of my knuckles. Should I worry about it or just use a lotion?

Yesterday my hands started swelling at the knuckles. They are itchy and red mainly on the right hand with pins and needles. What is it? Both parents had arthritis and my dad also had rheumatoid which I may have in my shoulder. I'm 46.
