hi..i had my tonsils out on 2/11/11...i have to say i was not prepared for how intense the recovery is! i am 30 years old so i know that age has alot to do with the length of recovery. i am now 10 days post surgery and i still have that "washrag in the throat" feeling! still feel very swollen and uncomfortable. it's true when they say that you go thru several stages of different pain. the first couple days were bearable..take the meds, drink the water. probably around 4 to 7 days i experienced the most pain. i could literally feel the scabs in my throat and the hot burning pain was almost more than i could stand! eating has become almost unbearable so i just rely on my liquids. i did notice that later in the healing it is best for me to drink warm liquids. it hurts really bad right now because the scabs are trying to come off. (imagine the feeling of a scab pulling away and you pouring hydrogen peroxide into it!) the cold liquids hurt more but warm water feels like heaven!!! i didn't listen to my doctor when he told me to take 2 weeks off work...i had the same feeling as everyone else..tonsils?? no biggie!!! well it IS a big deal and it IS a painful surgery!!! there are a few things that you MUST do.....1. DRINK, DRINK, DRINK!!! 2. get a warm mist humidifier 3. get gel ice packs and keep these wrapped around your throat at all times. good luck to everyone and feel free to ask questions...i feel like an expert now!! :-)

I'm 37 and had my tonsils out 9 days ago. I have been talking like a frog for about 6 days or so. Funny the things you can find just by googling them. The question still remains, how long will this last. I'll try to post again when I have healed.

I am 25 and got my tonsils out on 03/08/2011! it is nwt a week and a day after the surgery and i cant wait for it to be over! I was able to speak right after the surgery although i sound really strange. I had a really bad time with the earache since i already have sensitive ears! I stuck to my meds on schedule but because of my loss of appetite and the pain i got sick a couple of times on the 7th day and was so nauseous that i stopped taking the meds since they would turn my stomach. It has now been almost 30 some hrs after the last time i got sick and the last time i took my meds. Although there is still a bit of discomfort and minor pain (and still not feeling like eating), the pain has been bearable enough so i don't have to take the meds and i am not really nauseous just some trouble eating. Most of the white stuff is now off the back of my throat and i really hope this means that its getting better and no more lapses into unbearable pain cause i really want to avoid the meds. I am really glad to hear that other people also experienced the tongue pain, i thought it was weird! Its nice to know people have put there experience on the web so that worried people like me can Google something and know we aren't alone in worrying we are going to sound funny forever! hope this helps, any questions just let me know! P.S. i don't know if its just me but i thought pudding was really horrible and slimy after surgery and jello was strange to yet! lol

I am 40 years old and I had my tonsils out 6 days ago. I am still not talking and if I do it is mumbled and it hurts. My husband is loving it:-P but my 8 year old just told him last night that she misses Mommy's voice. That is heartbreaking. I tried to talk to her this morning to tell her I love her and it came out all crackled. When am I going to get my voice back?

It also hurts so much to yawn. Does anyone have any tips to speed up recovery? I have been drinking water and powerade like crazy, just started eating cream of wheat and soup yesterday and I am resting.

I am 40 years old and I just had a tonsillectomy 6 days ago. I still can not speak yet and if I do it comes out all crackly and it hurts. My husband loves the peace and quiet:-P  but my 8 year old daughter said to him that she misses Mommy's voice. That is heartbreaking. When do I get my voice back?

It really hurts when I yawn. I have been doing everything it says to do rest, drinking plenty of fluids and I just started eating yesterday. I had soup noodle soup and Cream of Wheat. What else can I do to speed up the recovery? I am not that patient.

Does anyone else have tips?:-)

Six days isn't very long when it comes to healing after surgery. I don't think there is anything you can do to speed it up. Just don't do anything that will agrivate or irritate it which can slow down the healing. We all heal at different rates and I'm sure the skill of the surgeon enters into it too.

I was 10 when I had mine removed in 1950 and I don't remember how long it took to get back to normal but I do know I wasn't pleased with the length of time. I'm sure I didn't do much talking for a lot longer than a week and eating solid food was quite a while later.

I was just learning to play trumpet and all of a sudden I couldn't keep the air from blowing out my nose so I was really upset about that. But eventually everything came back OK.

I turned 20 a couple of days before my tonsillectomy. its been 6 days now.
Days 1&2- uncomfortable and it was the swelling that made swallowing terrible. Iced broth and half water half apple juice were my saving grace
Day 3 - The turning point in my pain where I'd take the pain meds religiously and slightly colder than room temp water was about all I could manage.
Day 4 - The pain became intense. Vanilla ice cream in small doses was wonderful. started taking the meds more often.
Days 5&6 - Take meds as needed. I fear sleeping. Orange sherbert is gods gift to humanity, it doesnt leave a coating and isnt acidic like I thought.

I'm on the verge of developing bronchitis with this awful cough I have. I keep getting hiccups, it hurts so badly. I cant stand sound half the time. I still cant speak and when I do I "sound like a deaf person" talking, as offensive as that is, its true. My mouth cant form the words properly. I didnt realize how much I relied on my tonsils for word formation.
Usually when I get mucus in my throat, I'd flex my tonsils and tongue and then that would push forward the gunk, now I cant so I'm constantly hacking trying to clear my airways. If I had known how horrifying this whole ordeal was going to be, I dont think I would have done it.
Waking up from the surgery alone was traumatizing enough.

After 6 days of pain and suffering, I've lost 10lbs and gained a new perspective on this surgery.
I'm glad I did have one of the best ENT doctors in the state although I wouldnt recommend any adult get this procedure unless its an extreme case of some sort. taking a few days of work off a year and spending the money seems so much more convenient now.

I'm so glad for these replies so I know what to expect!  I'm having a tonsillectomy on 8/30/11 at 39 years old and have heard horror stories about it.  I didn't know if I'd be able to talk or not so I appreciate the comments!

I am getting mine removed on August 30th too and I am 40. I just posted a thread "Abscess Tonsil - TBR" if your interested in the background on what lead up to my diagnosis.

I would agree that I am glad that this forum exists. I am trying to compartmentalize the horror stories though.

I hope to hear how your progress goes too I just don't have anyway to identify you as other than "guest."

When I had mine out it was a routine thing to do at a certain age whether you need it or not. It seemed my whole class was in the hospital on the first Saturday of spring vacation. What a way to spend your vacation, but we had a week to recover before we had to go back to school. No one was doing much yelling for a while after we got back in school.

You have my sympathy, it's not easy to watch your kids in such discomfort and there's little you can do but wait for the healing to finish.
