I was four years old when I got my tonsils out. I'm twelve now. I don't remember nuch of it, but my mom said that the exact same thing happened to me. She also said that after a week or two I could talk perfectly fine. So the same should happen to you.

I had my tonsils out a week and a half ago. I couldn't talk for the first 5 days. Eventually I was able to whisper. By the end of the week I could talk for short bursts, and had visitors. As I talked more, my voice broke back in eventually. My advice is to be VERY careful to your voice, but try to speak, as long as it isn't painful. I am almost fully recovered, other than my singing voice being much higher than it used to be, but that may be because my voice doesn't have to fight it's way around swollen tonsils...
Best of luck!!

My six year old daughter got her tonsils and adenoids out 2 1/2 weeks ago and is STILL is not talking normal. She sounds like how a "deaf" person would talk, no offense. I dont know how long it takes to get her voice back, but it kind of worries me a little. THey never said this would happen nor did they say we would end up in the emergency twice, admitted once for 2 days due to hemoraging either....dont get your tonsils out unless u really have to!!

Hi,

I am 43, I just got mine removed yesterday. Reading all this I thought it was going to be far worse...
Here are the real facts without emotion or drama:
- swolen yes
- it hurts but not as bad as when I had tonsils infected, which was really terrible when they were blowing until the pus was going out....
- voice a bit strange for sure but I can tell it will go back to normal soon
- issues to form words properly because they lock your tong during surgery and this is why it hurts as well on the tong and prevents you from speaking perfectly, like if you bite your tong on each side..
- drink cold stuff and ice cream too
- is that a huge deal, not really

My surgeon had to put some stiches because when he operated one tonsil was still infected and created a lot of blood, which makes sense..

So do not worry to much...it will be painful for a week of so...
I had worse than that in terms of pain....the infection was 8, when the pain now is 4 to 5

I had my tonsils out almost 2 months ago and I'm still not healed. It is still difficult to say certain words/vowels. Words like "long" or "fall" (anything with a long vowel) sounds really weird

I remember waking up after my tonsillectomy and feeling this strange feeling in my jaw. It felt like my jaw had been clamped further than it can naturally go and my bite felt off. The ENT surgeon came in and seemed concerned about my jaw (this was before i mentioned anything). He said that they heard a crack when they were immobilising my jaw and started asking me to say random words to test my jaw function. He then started trying to set my jaw back in place with his hands but nothing happened. Anyway's its been 12 months and i still have this stiff feeling in my jaw and my front teeth clash together constantly when talking which is really annoying. I also have this random hole in the back of my throat which doesnt really cause any problems apart from the occassional time when food gets lodged in there. Other than that it went okay lol
