I'd been suffering from severe bloating and IBS. I had my gallbladder removed 6 years ago, but didn't think that was the whole story. I had an endoscopy and I do have diverticular (which is common in the over-50s, apparently). My GP referred me to an NHS dietitian a few months ago, and I've been put on the FODMAP diet. Basically, you have an elimination period of 6-8 weeks, cutting out all the foods that ferment once they're in your body. Then food groups are reintroduced over a period of several months to see what triggers the bloating. So far, we've identified caffeinated drinks, the alliums: onion, garlic, leeks (not chives), broccoli and cauliflower, mushrooms, and fruit with stones. It's tough sticking to the diet, especially as I have to have gluten-free bread and biscuits, but if it works in the long-run, I'll be happy. My stomach is very painful when swollen - I can bearly sit up straight. Holland and Barrett were very helpful with a FODMAP-friendly list when I emailed them. Anyone else on the FOMAP diet?
