This is the same thing that happens to me now. It gets me so scared because it hasn't happened before. There are times where I feel that it's my time to go. This has to stop because I can't function like normal. It's like my 3rd week being sick, but this started a couple days ago. I did smoke, but I've calmed it down a bit, but this keeps happening. I had a fit and started going crazy trying to get air back. I'm a healthy guy too. It scares me so much. I'm seeing a doctor today to find out more but this is scary. I also have a runny nose, couple body aches at times, it makes my eyes red when I can't breathe. It does sound like whooping cough but how do I get rid of it?
Update: Went to the doctor. He said it's some mucous ordeal. He prescribed me a spray and some pills. The spray is to rid the mucous because each time I cough badly, mucous comes out. So that makes sense. I have to take the spray twice a day. In order to stop the fit before it happens I try to cough, but breathe through my nose right after. DO NOT, try to get air back into your mouth. Make sure you relax. I'm thinking I will have a better sleep tonight with some treatment. It's the spring time and the weather has snowed and then went to 80 degrees, so maybe that added to the problem. I do hope this goes away. I wonder how some of you have felt. Even though it's been a long time.
It can irritate it, but it shouldn't be the cause
man you are right, last night I spent in the emergnecy room for this reason, it was so scary. It happened when I sqiueezed my thoar and coughed a lot to remove a lill food particle from the larynx. I almost passed out three time, kids started crying and then I ran to the emergency room. If you know the reason then it is very simple but if you don't know then have experience like me.
I had a little cough here and there for about 2 weeks. Yesterday out of nowhere I coughed like I normally would BUT this time it was very different. I notice that I couldn't breath out of my mouth no matter how hard I tried, to the point where I was ready to pass out. I sat down before I would've eventually fell over. A million thoughts were going though my head as I thought at this point I was dying. I calmed myself down and started breathing out of my nose. I was still clasping for air by I was able to breath though of nose. It was very tight though. I had more episodes during the day and another one brought on by sneezing. After going to bed which I was scared to death of going to sleep because normally when I lay down I would have a coughing fit,When I woke I started coughing and everything started right back over. I learn to breath though my nose but what happens if I get a blocked nose?? Scared to death!!!
I am new here and just returned from my doctor having experienced the same symptons as you all. Coughing fits followed by inability to breathe. Initially I couldn't breathe for about 10 seconds...which is bad enough. Last night It happened again and I could not breathe for approx 40-45 seconds. I was really frightened and seriously thought this was it! My doctor said it was not a physical condition and that it was stress related. I don't beleive him since I don't experieince any other stress related symptoms and this condition just started happenning suddenly with the last few weeks. I will seek a second opinion including a whooping cough test.
We ended up in the ER last night with my daughter because of her airway being constricted like this for what seemed like a good minute. It had happened several times for way shorter periods of time. They gave her a breathing treatment and took a chest x-ray. It appears to have been a chunk of mucus that couldn't get loose. we feel like it was irritated by dust because we have been doing a lot of tilling as well as an enormous amount of fog from 4 haunted houses in a row. These irritants settled and made it harder for the mucus to break free. This caused the laryngospasms when she coughed and then airway would close. Very scary. You have to get that clear with some kind of breathing treatment so that you can feel comfortable enough to cough hard enough to get it all up. If it goes on too long, it can cause pneumonia.
Am coughing then weezing for breath? Can anyone help
Hey with these respiration coughing issues has anyone vomited during this it's happened to me twice and quite frank it's the vomiting with the lack to breath that scares the sh*t out of me
Seems like there are multiple similar but different experiences.
1. Whooping cough
2. Acid Reflux
3. Bronchitis
4. laryngospasm
I doubt I have Acid Reflux (no burping or stomach acid). However, sometimes I get the experience after eating something spicy. Usually I can breathe through my nose when this happens but today that trick did not work either.
I read the article on laryngospasm and it sounds like a likely explanation.
My episode was like this. Taking a shower, coughed to clear my throat. I'm not a smoker. The cough inspired a bigger more satisfying cough, and then a bigger... and so on. The coughs were somewhat voluntary at first but they must have irritated my throat and chest until my throat closed up and I could not breath.
Ironically, after the episode passed (about 30 seconds but felt a lot longer), my throat and lungs feel amazingly clear. Scared me half to death.

Wow my mom is haveing similar problem but Dr wants to do an EGD and look down her esophagus
And possibly stretch it could be acid reflux and scar tissue

I have had a chest infection 5 weeks ago and an x ry sows the chest to now be clear. I'm still coughing and choking and my airway just completely shuts. I also vomit at times. I'm just coughing up white froth now. I've finished all the meds and because the extremey coughing has been going on so long I believe I have injured my larynx as my voice has been gone for 4 weeks. I have an appointment with a specialist next week - however, the choking vomitty cough is ruling ym life, hampering my recovery and quite honestly. now getting me down. All the neighbours must hear me and I don't have the confidence to go out at the moment. I have googled laryngospasm till I'm nearly an expert - just as well as most doctors have never heard of it. Has anyone actually had laryngospasm confirmed AND had successful treatment?
I have had the coughing, weezing, throat closing up for years. Thankfully I've never passed out from lack of breathing. It usually only lasts about 30-40 seconds. However, sometimes my throat still feels tight some time afterwards, but not closed up. I have used my inhaler of albuterol and it seems to help. I also massage my throat to get the mussels to loosen up, stretch my neck upwards sometimes helps too. It's been getting worse so I think I'll go to my doctor and see what he says.
I have also had what you have described. If your throat still feels tight afterwards sniff hard a couple of times then swallow. I know it sounds daft but it does seem to help. In the long term you may need to see the doctor. It maybe something called silent reflux where you have acid reflux but don't experience the burning or other obvious signs hence it being 'silent'.
