Hello everybody,

I had my thyroidectomy 8 months ago, at age 36. Even though I wasn't exactly slim before that, I gain a huge amount of weight after the surgery. I went up 60 + lbs and now I have no idea is it even possible for me to lose such amount of weight. I've tried keeping myself active with at least an hour of walking daily, I watch out what I eat... but it just doesn't seem like there is any progress happening at all. Even that hour I try to spend being active is sometimes impossible to get through: I get so tired so quickly.

Since the thyroidectomy, I've been on Synthroid and I was wandering if maybe adjusting my dosage together with more strict diet could give me more energy and make it possible for me to actually exercise and lose at least some of the weight?

Hello,

You need to ask you doctor to do a blood test to see if your thyroid prescription is putting you in a normal range.  If our levels are too low, you won't be able to lose weight.  Your doctor will increase your dosage to the appropriate level.  You'll need to go on a diet and decrease you caloric intake.  Best foods for you are low-fat and low sugar.  Consider lean meats like turkey, tofu and possibly egg whites.  Take in leafy green veggies.  As many as you can.  Try broccoli, cabbage, green beans, spinach and kale for starters.  Beyond that, you'll need to exercise.  You'll want to burn a fair amount of calories in your workouts to assist in weight loss.  Start out with some simple exercises and increase the duration and intensity as time goes by.  I think you find that this works very well.
