I just had a 4.5 cm nodule removed on the right side of my thyroid. My surgery was Friday afternoon and I'm going crazy with this feeling of tightness/choking. I hope it goes away. The pain pills don't help me. I starting to feel panicking/nervous. I have to stack my pillows high and lay sideways on the right to feel comfortable.

I also hadn't this feel in before surgery and was surprised to find that I still had it after surgery. Two things I changed one I massage around the trachea area very deep and I also stopped eating bread & potatoes. Only other thing I can think of is that maybe being slightest overactive helped. Just some ideas for you.

Your post talkes about Thyroiditis & Papillary Throat Cancer & you mentioned Vocal therapy. That's what I want to talk about to you. I have LPS which is worse than GERD because I can suddenly stop breathing without warning. I took vocal therapy & she told me I wasn't breathing right. I took too many breaths & found out I was gasping for air in between my words. I caught myself & now I breathe thru my nose & out thru my mouth-doing this purposely during the day. When you let out your breath - Make a "s" sound & keep blowing the air out with the s sound. It really works & when you feel like you are about to choke - breathe in thru your nose-stay calm & out thru your mouth & sometimes the sensation of choking will go away-most often it will. God Bless! Hope you get better-Elaine

It's scar tissue. Get a doctor like plastic surgeon, dermatology or a skin specialist that can give you an enzyme called Kenalog 40 and put that in the area of tightness (it's scar tissue). You will need to do it for several months til you fell less of a strangulation feeling. I have the same and only found out about thus melting enzyme this year. There is a lower dose of Kenalog 10 but use the higher for quite awhile. Google: Dr. David Sherris's article on MANAGEMENT OF SCAR CONTRCTURES, HYPERTROPHIC, AND KELOIDS. IT WON'T GET BETTER UNLESS YOU PUT KENALOG OR EQUIVALENT TO AREA. I pay $75 a visit to get rid if the nasty stuff, it works! Good luck! Allyson

I had my surgery seven months ago and I still feel bouts of tightness weekly, lasting hours at a time. It's like being choked internally. Like the feeling of having your Adams apple pushed in continuously. I've brought it up with my surgeon on two diff occasions, he just looks at me like "Hmm, no, I'm not familiar with what you are describing." I don't get worried or anxious easily, but the when the feeling comes on, I 100% feel like, woahhh that's not right. I feel like I might die. I get short on breath too. It comes out of nowhere and it's predictable.

I'm just 18 days past my thyroidectomy and am having the same problem. I have difficulty swallowing, a lump in my throat, and a choking sensation both in and out of my throat. Has any one found stretches or massage that can help this yet?

Hi, I had my thyroid removed due to thyroid cancer last march and over the last couple of months I've been experiencing the same problems as you regarding to the feeling of a lump in my throat. I spoke to my surgeon and he thinks it's due to things healing in the area, but it is a big worry especially when what I am feeling is similar to when I had the lump in my throat due to the cancer. I have an ultrasound in 2 weeks so hopefully get some answers then x

I had thyroid cancer and thyroidectomy in 2008. Started having sporadic painful pulling, stretching and choking feeling in my neck that occasionally radiated to my chest. I was told it is an esophageal spasm. No one knows why it occurs but it can be treated with Nitro when it occurs and it goes away quickly. Not a cure but a fix.

WOW... 5 years!!!!...I'm about a year and a half Post TT & couple of lymph nodes also removed and Iodine Radiation 2 months later. I also still have the choking feeling like a rope snug around my neck. Its not at the incision though for me. Its at the top of my neck. Also the remaining glands in the my whole neck feel very achy still. I was praying that with time and healing these sensations would go away but if you are still having them at 5 years. Looks like there is no light at the end of tunnel for us.

Hi. I am three weeks post total thyroidectomy and I am experiencing tightness, a sensation of a lump and fullness in my neck. I feel like I am choking. Also I am having trouble swallowing. My Consultant did not tell me that this could happen and I am actually very scared that this is a permanent state I am going to be left with. I've been reading the blogs from other people who are experiencing the same thing. Is there anyone out there who can tell me if anything can be done about this or if there is anything I can do to get relief as this is destroying my life. Help please.
