I still have tightness in my neck 13 years post thyroid surgery! Been to 26 drs. and none can tell me why. Have been in complete misery all these years!
I have had some luck with this situation by massaging the area with Ayurvedic Oil. A visit to The Raj in Fairfield, Iowa was a big help to ease the tightness. It seemed to get more pronounced over time. My surgery was eight years ago.
Antacids only help if your problem is reflux related whichmine is not
Thank you so much for adding your experience to this forum! This same thing has happened to me, twice in the two years since surgery! I was feeling as though I had a growth where the thyroid was which was scary or losing my mind. Thanks to all of you I realize it isn't a growth or my imagination. Anyway, just wanted to thank everyone.
Just wanted to ask if the tightness and pressure/choking feeling ever went away? I had a total thyroidectomy one month ago and I've had nonstop tightness and choking and I'm also worried because I can't find one story of someone who got relief after having these symptoms.
I can relate to every thing everyone is saying. It's been over 3 months since I had a total Thyroidectomy and I'm still having that tightness in my throat. When I swallow you can see the action of the skin pulling up and I can feel it. the scar is still painful to the touch although it looks healed and wearing high-cut blouses irritates it as it's still sensitive. The worse thing is I'm a singer and my voice now sounds like a man...and I'm not able to sing....Anyway, I have an appointment with my surgeon in about a week and I'll talk to him then.
I had thyroid and neck cancer surgery on 1/3. Last 4 days have been a nightmare with tightness and pressure feel like i am being choked. My primary and sugeon told me to
massage. Doesn’t work. Any suggestions to calm the situation down. I keeps me up at night as well.

Actually PT & hot compresses are HIGHLY recommended by the chief of Thyroid medicine at Massachusetts General Hospital. I had my surgery 1/9/18. I’m still having a bit of tightness in my throat but not severe... my main issues are SEVERE pain directly on the scar tissue (also known as a NEUROMA, damaged nerve tissue exposed through the scar tissue that is not perfectly smooth like previous tissues) and the HOLY c**p if ya want me to wear a seat belt I’m willing to murder you!!!! I have a large chest and the damn seatbelt likes to land DIRECTLY ON MY SCAR creating the most evil intense pain imaginable & trust me o have survived many many painful things!!!!
Anyone still struggling with their throat tightening should skip the ENT & get to the nearest REALLY BIG CITY to a Thyroid specialist in an endocrinology Dept at a major hospital!!!! No need to continue dealing w doctors who say “I don’t know “.
If a doctor doesn’t know it is their job to find out or send you to someone who can!!!!

It has been almost two months for me now since my TT. I also have skin pulling up when I swallow and can feel it. After developing a seroma after surgery, experiencing tightness which I still have and having trouble with my voice, breathing and swallowing. I went to see the Ent and was told I have unilateral vocal cord paralysis. Wonder if the tightness is related to the paralysis. Were you or anyone else diagnosed with vocal cord paralysis?
I had my surgery 8 years ago and have told my doctor about the same symptoms you described.I am just curious about what you found out.
Are you feeling any better... I had a total thyroidectomy three weeks ago and I feel horrible... It feels like the sewed my neck to tight in the inside... My chin and neck is still numb
I’m glad and sorry to see others have had issues after thyroid surgery. I had a partial removed which they though would be benign but turned out to be follicular cancer. 3 weeks after surgery (Sept 2016) I was in and out of the hospital. I could barely swallow, I was having massive chest pain, my entire neck was constricted. It was similar to having a cord with tiny pins choking me. I had multiple barium swallow tests and more. I slept upright because it was the only position slightly reduced the pain. At some points I wish I hadn’t come through the surgery. I did go see a shrink a few times to help me refocus. Even now 2yrs later, I can’t bare to watch any movies where someone is hung or their throat is slashed. I’ve was never able to return to work and have been on medical disability. My entire life was turned upside down but I’ve managed to find a middle ground to work with my “New Normal” as a newly retired 63yr old great grandma
Hi I’m sorry to say that I still suffer that pain almost two years later. Walking, talking, sitting, any activity makes it worse. I pray you have a better result.
lol im a singer too and had TT 8 months ago. im still getting pain down my right side of my neck. the seatbelt while driving is painful. id had enough and went to get pain killers last week and am getting a MRI soon. i know what its like after singing but i dont care either...keep on singing :)
Hi...I had a T T. in August of 2017. I am going through the same symptoms that you experienced, especially the shortness of breath. How long did that last for you? I have been to several endos and have had several tests done, and all results are coming back normal....are the drs sure this is anxiety for you, or are you still going through more testing?
