On the morning of the end of the first week I awoke after thinking all night I'd been swallowing large amounts of saliva. I decided to empty my mouth in the sink after I awoke rather than swallowing and upon examination realized it was blood and clotted blood I'd been swallowing all night. We called the doctor and the timing was right that I was his first patient by the time we got to his office.
He examined my throat and my left tonsil had a large blood clot which he removed after three deadening shots and then cauterized. I bled again that night but it finally stopped and hasn't started again. I find that I have slipped back to square one on the left tonsil and that the scabby crusty scratchy feeling which I notice all the time there is there non-stop. It's really beginning to get to me.
I have continued into the beginning of my 4th week post-op and am still very weak and tired. I do get a little unsteady on my feet from all the recuperating while sitting so much. I can eat about anything I want now and it doesn't hurt but I still have earaches, headaches, the tendency to breathe from my mouth and kind of a spaced out feeling. I take NO pain meds at all and only took the Tylenol the first couple of weeks. It didn't help much if any at all.
I'm very tired of all of this. I can't say at this point I wish I hadn't had it done - I just wish I'd explored all my possibilities including in-office coblation where you basically have no down time and no bleeding. I was headed for a CPAP machine for minor sleep apnea without the surgery so I elected to give it a try. I think without the blood clot and loss of blood and the cauterization I'd probably be a lot farther along but it's done now.
I'd like to hear from any of you who have posted recently or who recall their surgery plainly. Especially from anyone who had multiple surgeries as I did. Some days are better than others and some days I just want to cry from not sleeping well enough yet and from not being able to taste most of the food I eat. I've lost two dress sizes and that's about the most positive thing I have to say at this point. Hopefully things will be better in time.
Later that night, he began bleeding from his mouth. We took him to the ED and the cauterized the area with silver nitrate sticks and afrin soaked cotton balls and removed the clots (all while he was awake and screaming). It was horrifying, and I think that is putting it mildly. They watched us overnight, but in the morning he began to bleed again. This bought a trip to the OR. Following this cauterization we returned to the medical floor. Two hours later the bleeding was there to our dismay. At this point, he wouldn't have anything to do with someone poling around in his mouth (don't blame him). Back to the OR for the third time in 24 hrs. Following this OR trip, he aspirated blood and mucous into his lungs and had respiratory failure and ended up on a ventilator for four days, with a feeding tube placed. He came home after a week, many, many medications and transfusions. I think we are an extreme. But the awake cauterization??? Really?? Not event tylenol? I wish I was better informed of what was going to happen as he is very traumatized as a direct result of this.
As parents we owe it to our children to fully inform ourselves in the decisions we are about to make. Take a close look at who you choose to do this and their statistical outcomes. Never be afraid to go against that gut feeling. You are the best advocate for your children!!
I am on day 7 of my re-cauterization and feeling much better and without any bleeds. Pray for me because I have to admit that gushing blood episode is enough to scare anyone and make them paranoid to do anything for fear of "opening up" again.
I wish you all the best of luck. Maybe for those about to go under for this surgery just talk to your Dr. about this before hand so you can voice your concern and maybe it is possible to ask them to do an even more-than-usually thorough job? I know personally if I had to do this again, as the anesthesia hit me to go under I'd say "burn um good doc".
I had my tonsils out 3 weeks ago, 27/6. I had bleeding day 9 and 10 that stopped after 20 minute or so. I had bleeding day 13 which lasted about 4 hours on and off. I went to emergency twice but it stopped bleeding before I was seen and the general idea was that it wasn't enough blood to worry about and it wouldnt bleed again. Day 16, just last wednesday I had a massive bleed when I woke up, I spat out 2 cups of blood, vomited up some more blood and went straight to my surgeon who put me into surgery a few hours later. My stomach was pumped full of blood and I had to have a blood transfusion. I haven't heard of anyone having cauterization after 2 weeks post op, and I've been put on another 2 weeks of bed rest, soft foods, no alcohol or smoking or exercise.
=( Worst operation I've ever had and I'm only 19, not even an older person who generally have more problems. My mums and nurse and my dads a doctor so I guess that's pretty lucky they knew the risks and what to look out for but still. I'm so depressed at having to stay home for this long not doing anything so I'd be interested to know if anyone else has had these problems
I am 21 and also experienced bleeding on the 4th day after my tonsils were out.
It was in the afternoon and tasted a little bit of blood and within half an hour or so my mouth was filling up with blood from the Left tonsil side. As soon as I spit blood in the sink, my mother said "I'm taking you to the emergency room." I spit blood out in a medium sized plastic bowl the whole way. Once I was there they hooked me up to an IV and did blood tests and transferred me over to another hospital where I would probably go into surgery again and get cauterized by an ENT. Since the doctor knew I was coming in - I was moved through all the steps fast. I was given pain meds and anti-nausea med again The bleeding had slowed/maybe clotted but my doctor's idea is that the clot may not hold very long and he wanted to put me under and cauterize any other area that didn't seem to be 'holding' which there was more areas (I found out after) that seemed closer to bleeding.
@Alisa - Sadly, This can occur with you doing absolutely everything 'right.' I stayed hydrated (vey well hydrated I might add), I was still only on a liquid diet, I stayed completely away from dairy, I rested well, did not strain myself, bend over for any reason, I rested my voice and did not talk, and I drank healthy protein drinks filled with vitamins, minerrals, and amino acids-with sweeteners other than sugar/artificial sweeteners. I felt that I did pretty well. My doctor said I did nothing wrong and basically to keep doing what I had been doing. There's no way to predict that omeones definitely not going to bleed or going to bleed.
There are idiots that are smoking and drinking 2-3 days after their surgery, being physically active, and pushing their bodies on what they can't eat yet and some of them will get away with it without bleeding although they increase their risks of bleeding. I decreased my risks of bleeding but it still happened.
Sorry to all of you that also had to experience this. My advice is to check into your ENT before choosing one to do your surgery. Be educated and do NOT wait around while you are bleeding. Head to the emergency room! Also: Be prepared at all times to leave for the emergency room: Have your Id's and insurance cards that are necessary for you/your child, Keep a record of what you have been doing, your medicines and dosages and be ready to take it with you, have something prepared if you start spitting out blood so doctors know amount. Make sure you have someone around to drive you that is ready to leave fast.
I wish you all well. Feel free to e-mail me if you are just needing someone that’s understanding about this or to get more prepared before your surgery with how you should care for yourself (Theres not any info barely given beforehand in my opinion) I've been there/still am here on my sixth day now from tonsillectomy (..and sinus surgery actually too)
Remember!! Even if your bleeding starts slowing down: It could still be slowly oozing out without your knowledge.
At that time, my parents and I were renting a place close to my surgeon in case of emergencies, which is 3 hours from home. On the 16th, I had my post-op appointment with him. I felt good and he gave me the all clear to go home. So, I went home; dreaming of sleeping in my own bed. However, that night I woke up to blood glushing out of my mouth, more than I had with the left scab, a lot more. The only problem was that I did not know of any ENT doctor around. My parents rushed me to the closest hospital and upon arrival, we found out that there was no emergency ENT doctor there. Therefore, they decided to transfer me to Christiana Hospital which was an hour and a half away. But first they had to slow the bleeding. They put a balloon all the way up my nose and filled it with air. It was the worst pain in my whole life; I never screamed that hard (being that I'm 20 makes a difference). The whole ambalance ride I glushed out around 2 quarts of blood.
At the hospital, I received an ENT doc. He told me I was bleeding from the adenoids which is extremely rare (I read on an article that .4% of persons bleed from the adenoids). I lost so much blood; I thought I was going to die.
Anyway, right now I'm sitting in the hospital overnight. Can't sleep. I'm too scared that i'll bleed again because every time I've bled, my mouth was dry from sleeping. Plus, I can't trust that everything is fixed because something else always seems to happen.
They are romoving the clott and cauterizing it this afternoon, but they are not putting her asleep. how are you now?
