I'm not sure if this will help anyone else, but here is an update on my condition....I wanted to avoid medication, but then symptoms eventually got so severe that the baby shampoo & cetaphil just weren't enough. This is what helped me:
1)Wash eyes twice a day w/ baby shampoo
2)Moisturize w/ Cetaphil followed by diaper rash cream (it acts as a moisture barrier)
3)When the symptoms were at their worst, I did a 9 day cycle of Cephalexin (this COMPLETELY erased the symptoms)
4)If you cannot or do not want to go to the dr., take an antihistamine, this will help w/ the itching.

That cleared my condition up. However, it did come back in a few weeks. I was placed on Avelox rather than Cephalexin. It is a much stronger antibiotic & was supposed to work faster. I DO NOT recommend this. It took much longer to clear my symptoms, w/ much worse side effects. Eventually the condition did clear back up & has been gone for about a month now. I do still wash my eyes w/ baby shampoo & use the moisturizers I previously mentioned daily. There has definitely been some irreversible tissue damage, especially under my left eye. Hopefully, this will dissipate over time. Hopefully, this will hope someone. Please let me know.

Mine was caused by sunblock or retinol. I was using a Neutrogena retinol cream as an anti aging treatment and I began to notice that whenever I would get this anywhere close to my eyes, the skin would eventually react, especially my under eye area.

I have not yet tried a retinol without sunscreen in it to find out how it compares, but I've at least pinpointed something! Now I'm searching for a good sunblock that has no fragrance in it or other irritants so I can keep my face protected.

I hope this helps someone else!

I too have the same thing, mine is under my left eye and looks like I haven't slept in a while. It's not so bad at the moment I've had it for a few weeks, I thought nothing of it but it hasn't cleared up yet so I figured I'd look on here. I can see it could be serious if I don't treat it, I'm going to try my organic soap for a week and see if that helps.

I have similar symptoms. I get small paper-like cuts in the creases and corners of my eyelids and below my eyes. I also get the swelling, the flakiness, and the redness. This started slowly about 2 years ago and has progressed since then. It has now been consistant for 5 months. At times it is very severe. I do not wear any make-up, use any soap on my face, or wear any perfumes. I have a wood stove. Whenever I use it, my eyes are at their worst. My sister has the same problem and has been going to the dermatologist for some time now. So far, there has been no solution. What I use now is Vasoline. I wash my face and eyes with water every night and morning. Then I use Cetaphil lotion just on my face and I use the Vasoline above and under my eyes. Of course, you cannot get it in your eyes. It is more like a skin protector than a cure. I do not use any towels or paper products either. Put the Vasoline on when your eyes are still wet. Use your fingers. This has really helped to minimalize the problem. My eyes look very good. They still itch and get the paper cuts, but they do not get worse. I am still looking for a solution to the problem. I have tried many things, to no avail. Do not use cortizone. It will seem like it is curing it, but it comes right back when you stop using it. It is extremely damaging to your eyes. Aveeno is supposed to have a new product out for eczema (without the cortizone) but I haven't been able to find it yet. I am very anxious to try it. I will let you know if it works for me. (I know everyone reacts differently to these products)

I have had same thing for past 5 days, on the 4th day, I put zinc oxide under my eyes and it has helped considerably.

Day 5 (2days now of zinc oxide) and I am doing much better, still have some redness, though.

Its both comforting & terrifying to see this many people suffering from the same thing I am!!!! On Christmas Day, I noticed a small insect bite-like bump below my left eye. It was a little itchy, but no big deal. Over the next few weeks I got the same type of bump below my right eye, while my left eye worsened greatly. My left eye turned into what I imagine a chemical burn to be like: A large red patch, that occasionally oozes a clear liquid, then becomes dry & flaky. The skin peels off & then I think its going away, but it comes back again. Some days;when its at its worst, I wake up to an eye that is completely swelled shut. My right eye now appears to be getting worse. However, its not exactly the same as the left. It has the small bump in the outer corner like the left eye originally did, it also has a thin smile-shaped rash extending across the lower under eye region. Like most of you, both of my under eye regions look tired, puffy & wrinkled. Right after this began, I changed my skin care regimen. I was using an anti-aging serum(I'm only 26 but I figured it was never too soon to start). I have no history of sensitive skin or skin problems of any kind. I made the mistake of not reading the warning on the package. The product contains alpha hydroxy acid & stated that you should not be in the sun & to discontinue use for a week before being in the sun.....I work at a tanning salon & am an avid tanner(I have been tanning for 11 yrs). So after calling myself every name in the book I discontinued using that product & anything not hypoallergenic immediately. I only used that serum for 3 weeks tops. That was weeks ago, I assumed I had caused a chemical burn w/ the acid-tanning combo & was hoping it was healing.....Its only gotten worse not better & now my right eye is worse than it was weeks ago. If the AHA is not the cause, the only other things I can think of is beginning about 3 months ago, I noticed that my under-eyes looked a little puffier than usual & the skin where the under eyes meet the cheeks looked a little different texturally. I didn't think anything of it then, & still am not sure if that actually has anything to do w/ the problem at hand or not. .....I have no health insurance & pretty much no money, so unfortunately, a doctor's visit is out of the question unless its an ABSOLUTE EMERGENCY. Also, I'm a vegan and a bit of a naturalist, so any natural cure would be preferable, but at this point, I'll do just about ANYTHING to look like myself again. And, before I forget, I've been using hypoallergenic cleanser, cetaphil lotion, and aloe. I also apply ice when the swelling gets bad. PLEASE HELP ME!!!!

I read the above post & could not believe it.... it sounds almost word for word like my story. I've had it anywhere from 6-8 weeks now. I remember complaining to my family that something new must be blooming in our area because my nose wouldn't stop running & that I needed to start taking my OTC allergy pills again. That's around the same time I noticed the redness in the corner of my left eye & small red bump under the corner of the same eye. I've tried all kinds of cleansers, even peroxide 2 to 3 times a day, that stopped the itching & some of the discoloration. When that treatment became too dry, I started putting neosporin on the rash at night. After all that, this thing is still hanging around. I noticed that it has now jumped to the outer corner of my right eye & the upper inner corner of my right eye too. I also have no health insurance now, so have been trying different home/otc remedies. Getting so frustrated one night I stood looking into my medicine cabinet thinking what to try next.... I found my husbands "lysine" cold sore ointment. I thought what the heck, I've been applying it to my left eye where the issue first started, it has brought the color almost back to normal, stops the itching for a while & moisturizes the area. When it starts to itch again then I know it's time to wash the area & apply again. Every few days the area peels/sheds a little (I'm hoping this is a good thing to rid the skin of whatever). I feel no more pain, only slight itching every once in awhile. Is this a cure? I don't know yet, but it's brought me relief for now. Lysine is all natural, and also comes in pill form (although I haven't tried the pills). I don't now if all cold sore ointments are natural, but this one is. Good luck to one & all with this nasty thing!! I'll update when I've given it more time.

After reading the entries I am relieved that I am not alone with this problem. My concern is (was) mostly - that it has nothing to do with the skin itself. Rather that it is the symptom for something way more severe. However, if someone can deal with it for over a year (and is still alive!) it can't be anything serious. Right? What I do to sooth the discomfort is: apply cotton pads soaked in steeped camomile-tea to the affected eye area and leave them on for 5 to 10 minutes. It does not take care of the problem - but at least it feels good.

I have had the same thing for a year or so. I have found through trial and error that the best thing to do is:

1. Keep your hands (fingers) away from affected areas because they are full of germs

2. Be sure to wash pillows and sheets regularly

3. Use triple antibiotic ointment (neosporin) every other day in morning

4. When you wipe off the crusty around your eye, be sure to do with cold water, as warm water further dries the skin

I have used many other ointments and believe me, this works but you have to be on top of it.

I came here hoping to find a doctor or someone who would give a suggestion. But that doesn't seem to be the case.
My rash started under my right eye about 14 months ago. It started as just a red bump under the outer side of my eye that would come and go as it pleased. I thought it was just a blemish of some sort and that it would go away. During my 8th month of pregnancy it came back really bad. The small bump turned into a cluster of red bumps at the corner of my eye and then very slowly spread under my eye and a few on my eye lid. After my son was born I went to the doctor who said it was an allergy and gave me 0.25% corticosteroid. As soon as I stopped using the cream it came back. Some days it gets quite itchy under my eye but that's the only place. Other than that it just makes my eye look gross. I've tried diaper rash cream, vitamin E & Glaxal Base.
So I phoned my mother who is into "self healing". She said that anything to do with the eyes is a manifestation of something that you do not want to see. She asked me what the first thing that came to mind was and it was my surroundings. I moved from the province I grew up in to one that I find ugly. She told me I need to look out the window and find something I like instead of looking out and hating it. It's harder said than done.
You may laugh but I thought I would just post an alternative on here.

I have never experiences any "rashes" on my face until I started wearing my new eyeglasses. Under my eyes, where the bottom of the lens ends, my skin is red, scaley and looks like eczema. It started with a red bump under my left eye then after about two weeks the rash started under my right eye too. The area is raised and dead skin comes off and the texture of my skin looks wrinkley. The bottom of the lens does not have an eyeglass frame around it. The only thing I did different this time was add transition lenses, scratch coat, and anti-glare coat to the lenses. I called the eye doctor to ask if the coatings on the lenses could be causing the problem. The answer was no. I believe that I am allergic to one of the coatings that are on my lenses. I've started wearing my old glasses to see if this clears up. When it first started, I was afraid that I had developed a skin cancer under my left eye. It is below the eye socket, at the top of the cheek right below where the eyeglass lens stops. The lens does not actually touch my skin. I have done research about eyeglass coatings and allergies but I haven't found much info. Most of the allergic reactions are with the metal in the frames. If anyone else has these symptoms after getting coated lenses ***this post is edited by moderator *** *** private e-mails not allowed **
