I went to my local pharmacy and asked for help. She advised me to use BioDerma Sensibio and Avene Rich Compensating Cream-sparingly. So I started out using the BioDerma product to remove my eye makeup and wash face, very soothing. Wore no eye makeup for two days and slowly started to use the Avene moisturizer. Worked wonders, but I still have to be very careful not to over moisturize. But the redness and itchiness is gone. For sure I will continue using the Sensibio. Its amazing!

I wanted to share my story with others in the event that it may help them in their research and finding whether or not they are allergic to mushrooms.

For me and started about eight months ago I ate large stuffed Portabella mushroom and was in severe stomach cramps and pain and diarrhea within 20 to 30 minutes. Since I haveeaten mushrooms with no problem my entire life I assumed I had a bad mushroom. A couple of months later I ate another stuffed Portabella mushroom and experienced the same horrible stomach cramps and diarrhea. A few months went by and I had a slice of pizza that contained some Portabella mushrooms thinking the small quantity of mushrooms would not affect me and again I was sick. From here forward I stopped eating Portabella mushrooms and did not experience any stomach pains or illness.

However in May 2012 I noticed a red streak/lying under my right eye it almost look like I had been scratched. I cannot associate this with any problems. I applied ointment to the area for over two weeks and it finally yet slowly went away. The area was not it she and was just a little bit uncomfortable. A couple of weeks later I woke up with the same I the same red line now further redness underneath my eye on the skin it also appeared dry and flaky. The brightness went away after a couple of days. It would go from red to dry and flaky in the dry and flakiness wasn't ever really going away. Additionally I was experiencing extremely dry lips which is very unusual for me. This intermittent redness dryness and dry lips continued often on throughout May, June and most of July. I could not put my finger on what the problem was however I trashed my makeup, my contacts and cleaned all my makeup brushes and hoping to eliminate the problem. The day I finally figured it out I was applying my night cream that I apply every night. Back in May (when my skin problem began) I had switched from Olay night cream to Aveeno night cream. The Aveeno product is very nice and I enjoyed using it however one evening as I was racking my brain still trying to put my finger on my symptoms and cause because I was having another severe attack that now went to the left eye, I discovered that Aveeno night cream I was using contains shiitake mushroom extract!!!! As it turns out the continual dryness and flakiness was the result of rubbing shiitake mushroom extract on my face each night. When I would have an outbreak of redness, hives and swelling was attributed to the fact that I was still eating some small mushrooms that were ingredients in food that I eat such as Chinese food, soups etc. Consuming the small amount of mushrooms intensified the allergy resulting in the redness/hives/swelling. I didn't put this together in the beginning because I associated consuming the mushroom allergy to gastrointestinal pain and since I wasn't experiencing that, I was not relating the allergy to the problem with the skin around my eyes and on my lips. I have since learned that a more severe mushroom allergy cause gastrointestinal issues and less severe on the skin particularly in the areas of the eyes and lips. Also it is common for a mushroom allergy to result in a red streak or scratch like appearance on the skin.

As of today it has been over two weeks since I have stopped using the night cream and not consumed any form of mushroom and I have been problem free...thank God. I have read many stories where it has taken people years and hundreds or even thousands of dollars in doctor’s visits to figure out their mushroom allergy. I'm hoping that my story will help anyone out there with the same symptoms.

Most have blepharidus, and that is a condition that can be resolved usually by using baby shampoo...(although it continues to come and go.) I have had a similar problem and I think it is just a low threshold to allergins. It is as if my tears are extra mucosy and they irritate my eyes. My eyes tear up all the time, especially in the mornings. The one thing that has worked miracles for me has been rinsing my eyes with witch hazel...it stings at first, but than brings such relief. I also use a netti pot. This seems to help keep my eyes clear.

Hi. I had the same thing for about 6 weeks. I had dryness, flaking, puffiness, itchiness under my eyes. It's nearly gone now. After a lot of research and chats with chemists and medical experts I think I've found the solution! What I did:

1. I used antihistamines to get rid of the itchiness. (I stopped after one pack as I no longer suffered from itchiness) It didn't seem to improve the condition but it was less puffy and irritated.

2. I figured I was allergic to something. I cut the following out:

I stopped using night cream and used aveeno cream as my day cream

I stopped taking multivitamins (Berocca to be exact - I used to take it everyday in the winter)

I made sure all my make up products were hypoallergenic

3. I take my make up off VERY gently with non perfumed cleanser (Simple) and I used clarins undereye cream every night

4. I thought also it could be stress related - triggered by lack of sleep. I make sure I get enough sleep and indulge in lie-ins and naps if I don't.

This is the second time I've had this condition. The last time I used hydrocortisone cream and it got rid of it in a couple of days. The problem is it came back and the second time hydrocortisone didn't work and seemed to aggravate the condition.

I hope this helps!

Hello everyone,

I've been searching the internet to find natural remedies to treat a red rash that had started as a small red rash right at the corner of my eye and had grown to a size of Blueberry after about a month. The rash is itchy, redish pink in colour, inflamed (slightly raised), flakes if touched and not moisturized, dry and came out of nowhere.

I did not that at the time I was eating more dairy and sugar as it was during the Christmas period. This coupled with stress of organising events over the holidays may have flared up this rash after nearly 20 years! The last time I had this was when I was about 12 and the doctor couldn't tell me what was causing it but he prescribed me an antibiotic cream which helped it go after a month. However, I did not want to use antibiotics again as now I understand the harmful effects it has on the body.

I've tried a few suggestions but what I found worked was the below which cleared up my rash after 3 days (it is only small, about a month and half old so it may take longer for those who've had this problem for longer).

What you will need:

- Organic Apple Cider Vinegar (commercial grade is OK but use more water to dilute as it's stronger)

- Tea Tree Oil extract

- A sensitive, non-perfume, naked, allergy friendly moisturizing agent (not Sorbolene - this actually worsens most skin complaints! Google around for more information). I used Virgin coconut oil from my local Indian grocer but you can use your favourite.

- Some cotton pads

- A clean sterilised jar

- Some water

Preparation:

- Make the cider vinegar toner: Mix into a jar, 1 part (I used a tablespoon) of the vinegar to 4 parts water. If using commercial grade vinegar, use 5 parts water.

- Make anti-septic moisturiser: Mix into a tub or jar, 1 teaspoon of Tea Tree Oil Extract to approximately 200mls of your favourite moisturiser. More for VERY oily skin, less for dry or sensitive skin. For coconut oil, you need to warm it up in a bowl of warm water before mixing as it is usually solid. I scoop 8 tablespoons from the jar into a ceramic bowl that is sitting in hot water and stir gently. I then pour into the jar - don't put your jar in hot water in case it cracks!

Method:

- Do this at least once a day, night time if only once a day.

- Wash your face as usual with a gentle cleanser. I use natural oil soaps such as Olive and Honey but it's up to you. Make sure there are no additives or anything that could irritate your skin. Your skin will be ultra sensitive to chemicals right now!

- Dip a cotton pad into your cider vinegar toner and apply topically to the rash. You want to hold and press it gently for at least 10 seconds. If it starts to burn take the cotton pad away and add more water to your tonic as it's too strong!

- Allow your skin to dry for about 5 minutes until the tonic has absorbed into your skin.

- Apply your tea tree moisturiser to the face to avoid any further infection and to nourish the skin.

NOTE: I have combination skin so I benefit from Tea Tea oil. If you have naturally dry skin then you are better off using Aloe Vera Gel or Coconut oil with less tea tree oil. Some people also use Witch Hazel or Jojoba Oil which I cannot tell if it works with this method but I do not see why it would not. Coconut oil and Aloe Vera Gel would work best as a moisturiser for your rash.

After the first night, the swelling subsided a little but the redness was still there. By the third night, the flaky layer came off completely (like a thin layer of skin) which at first shocked me but after removing it completely, a smooth and less red skin appeared. It is also lost its itch.

I repeated this for a further 3 days and it has completely gone. It has been gone for a month now so I wanted to share this with others who are suffering similar symptoms and have not tried this method yet.

Good luck and be careful with the strength of Cider Vinegar! Tea Tree oil can also dry your skin if you use too much!

I recently developed a red rash under my eyes exactly the way several of you described on here. Some mornings I would wake up and the skin is dry, crusty and after a shower and washing my face, it's really red and weeping. It was such a pain in the butt! To top it off I couldn't get in to a dermatologist - it's almost impossible to see one unless you have had an appt for a couple of weeks out. I threw out all my make up, make up sponges, brushes and lotions. I replaced with all new hypoallergenic make up, and I bought these 4 things that truly helped!

1. Aveeno Calming Foam Facial Wash

2. Eucerin 2 in 1 Baby Shampoo/body wash.

3. Aveeno Daily Moisturizer.

last but not least... this amazing product...

4. Reviva Vitamin E Stick - Superior Protection for lips and eyes.

Do NOT rub your skin during washing and especially during drying. Dap gently with a towel. The skin around the eyes are very sensitive and especially after a rash - as it is trying to heal, it will dry up and start to peel. Naturally you want to help speed the process of peeling it off so you rub a lil harder while washing your face, or you feel the need to remove the peeling skin with your finger ... DON'T.

l just wash my face alternately using either the Aveeno Facial Wash or Eucerin Baby Wash. I apply the Aveeno moisturizer all over my face - except around the eyes. I use the Vitamin E stick directly on the areas under the eyes. If I have to go to work or outside somewhere, I lightly apply foundation then gently put a little coat of Vitamin E around the eye area affected by the rash. Then I gently pat the powder on my face and gently blend it in with a soft facial blush brush. I carry the Vitamin E stick in my purse. If it feels like its drying up again during the day, I dab a lil over my make up lightly. It leaves a lil shiny-ness to it but that's ok. At night, before bed I apply the vitamin E stick on it again. Pretty much use it 3 times a day on my face and within 3 days to a week, I can see a major difference. Starting to be normal again! The best part is the Vitamin E Stick is only about $4 while everything else costs more.

I have the same problem, which I have almost healed completely using a mixer of 1/2 olive oil and 1/2 castor oil. I tried many different creams (from pennatin to hydrocoritizone) with no get results. The oil mixer is working very well...you can hardly notice that it is there now (and the results happened quickly).
