I have had exactly the same problem - and I found out what it is!

I have never ever had any skin problems whatsoever.  However my sister has lived with this eye rash which spread to her inner arms just like a dermatitis.  A couple of months ago we shared some eyeshadow.  Two weeks later I had a problem.

I woke up one morning with a small lump just beneath my left eye.  I thought I had a mozzie bite.  It was a little itchy and red.  Then over the next few days my eyelids became dry itchy and red.  My lips suddenly became really dry too.  On bad days the redness would blotch over my whole face.  As I had never had anything like this - it drove me crazy, I couldn't stand it.

I went to the Doctor who told me it was eczema and prescribed a cream to apply.  When I applied it, my eyes became worse.  There were also certain foods that irritated it and made it worse.

As I was trying to narrow down the cause, I fasted, drank only spring water and my symptoms decreased.  If I introduced anything with sugar my eyes became itchy and red and my lips would slightly swell and were also very dry.  I went back to the doc and had blood tests.  Everything came back normal, yet I was beside myself.

On a hunch I applied antifungal cream Hydrozol to my eyes and lips and suddenly they started to feel better.  However, for someone who is normally very active and holds a busy life, I now just wanted to sleep.  By the afternoon I was exhausted. On good days I was ok, but days where my skin had inflamed I felt terrible.

My Doc met with me again and said she had a hunch that I had somehow managed to get some type of funus in my system.  I told her about the eyeshadow and how my sister had this too.  She said it could be possible that It was transferred through the makeup and has entered my system.

She put me on Nystatin which is an antifungal medication - 1 tablet three times a day.  I instantly felt better, the next day my rash was clearing up, but personally I felt like layers of fogginess was lifting off me.  I have now been on it for a week and feel amazing - I need to take it for 16 days to clear up the fungus.

The best part is that my sister who has had this for 12 years and believed it was eczema, went to her doctor and asked for the same prescription.  She has been on it for 4 days and said all of her eczema is clearing up. Her eyes were previously flaky and dry were also repairing - that fast! She said she feels energetic again, hasn't felt like that for years and years.  The best part is that she thought she was allergic to sugar too, as I did, and she is not.

Sugar feeds fungus.  So when you eat sugar, the fungus gets busy and grows, making your skin itch, making your system inflamed and making you feel lethargic and foggy.  She is so excited that she has found an answer to her problem.  I am so thankful I persisted to find an answer and didn't accept it as eczema.  Until you have had it, you just have no idea how much it affects your every day life and well being.

Sorry for the long post but, it is an amazing story.  As her doctor said, so many people would believe that they just had eczema when in fact they have somehow ended up with a fungal infection and don't even know about it.  If I hadn't contracted the fungal infection, she would have gone on for years believing that she had eczema. So if you have this horrible thing, clear it up with Nystatin - you will feel so much better!

Hi all...Like many of you might have by now,  I tried many of these suggestions.  And glad to say that some worked... whether it's the way I did things before or the new products I now use on my skin, I can't help but say that I know God worked thru them all.  After the frustration level hit, so did my knees hit the floor & in prayer I went.  I highly believe in the Power of Prayer (too many miracles have happened for me not to believe) & like before, the Lord, Jesus Christ, delivered.  He's my ultimate healer & I pray that whoever reads this can make Him your Heealer, redeemer, your all...too!

God Bless! ♥

hI, i have suffered on and off with this problem for years and have tried many different remedies, the one that has been consistantly successful for me is hayfever tablets, i don't buy branded ones i buy asda's own they are exactly the same as the branded ones just much cheaper, i think you can only get them from the instore chemist though.  the first time i tried them it took about a week for the soreness and irritation to clear, but now i start taking them as soon as it flares up, and so far i have been able to keep it at bay. I also apply Dr Bronners All One baby balm, the only uk site i can find that sells this is a company called There must be a better way, this is really amazing stuff, the skin around my eyes was very dry, puffy, wrinkly and sore, within a day there was a noticeable difference, i love it so much that i use it every day now instead of my regular eye moisturiser. I hope this helps.

I have had this over the past couple of weeks.  Red and itchy under my eyes and a little between my eye and temple. This has been a particularly long Winter.  All of my skin is very dry I seem to also be affected by allergies much more this year.  I tried a couple of the recommendations on this board and found what worked best for me - Aquafor.

Neosporin - No help at all,  Desitin - made it worse.

I also used a tiny bit of Benadryl topical which helped with the itching and did not make it worse.  In addition, I'm not sure if it helped but I have also been taking Zyrtec or Claritin the last few days.

The hardest part is for all of these, you have to make sure you don't get any of these things in your eyes.  I kept the ointments away from the edge of my eye and put small amounts.

I had the same. I researched and found out that it is a very common thing to get a red like rash, sometimes itchy and flaky under eye. that is because the skin around the eyes is most sensitive and that happens when it is drying out.

so what i did, i stopped using wet wipes on my face because it dry's that area out. anything like face wash or too often taking a shower can dry that area out. i started  moisturizing that area about 3 to 4 times a day. it is now 1 week later and it is gone.

anything that you do that could be drying your face out either stop completely doing it or moisturize a lot more often around your eyes. even dry temperatures can cause that or sunburn...under-eye-skin is more sensitive that the rest of the facial skin.

I have had the same thing for about three weeks now. I know I have a gluten intolerance that has been getting progressively worse over the years. From reading through the posts it sounds like the best solution is to treat the underlying problem while simultaneously treating the rash. If I am reading this right, we should be both taking an antihistamine while using a topical cream or anti-bacterial to treat the rash. (Tea from the tea plant is a natural antibiotic, it is used to treat eye infections in animals, you can actually pick up the tea extract from the ferret section of petsmart). Keep new bacteria or anything that can irritate the skin off of the affected area. I imagine hydro-cortisone cream would keep the itching down. Then figure out what you are allergic to, by either taking an allergy test or by removing common allergens, then slowly adding them back in until there is a reaction. Is this what I can conclude from these posts?

I had this for a month. I kept trying different things, it kept getting worse.

As well, I read a whole bunch of stuff on perioral dermatitis. So, I started taking a strong probiotic, and have cut dairy and eggs out of my diet...but I think the thing that helped the most is I washed my face and the affected area with an all natural SLS-free soap, then rinsed with water, then patted dry, and left it alone. I cut all use of coconut oil from all areas of my face, which I'd been using for about a year as a moisturizer. The rash has now started to heal and vanish, within a day and a half.

My eyelid is acting up a bit, it's a bit puffy, so I pulled it back and looked under the top lid and saw inflammation in there. SO...I think I have an idea of what happened to me.

Because I'm an all-natural kinda girl, I've been using coconut oil as my makeup remover and moisturizer for a year, and I rarely use a cleanser around my eyes. The thick oil created an occlusive layer which trapped bacteria or possibly a form of yeast, plus I think my skin may have been sensitive to the coconut oil from the start. Finally, with all the oil over my eyelid to remove makeup, I think there is a clog in a gland there, which got infected. My eye was tearing and draining, and everywhere it drained from the corner of my eye while I slept, the rash began to develop. And it couldn't heal, because I was constantly coating it with oil as a moisturizer. On top of this, my diet has been such that there is likely too much yeast in my system to begin with, as well as things that are know skin irritants. Just a lot of high-risk factors for an eye-skin problem!

I'm going to an eye doctor tomorrow to see if I need drops to clear the eye itself, but the rash seems to be leaving.

I think what has helped is using nothing but water on my face, changing my diet, getting rid of fluoride toothpaste, and adding zinc and a multi supplement as well as a strong probiotic supplement. Cutting a lot of the eggs and cheese and milk. Cleansing the area with a natural cleanser. That's my guess, but who knows if some of those are unnecessary?

At any rate, I think any strong moisturizer can create an occlusive layer on your skin, and makeup can clog things around and in the eye too, so I definitely recommend seeing an optometrist and not just a dermatologist. :)

Hopefully my case is solved. I'll see what the doc says tomorrow.

Many causes are probable of course,  and after reading through so many, PLEASE CONSIDER THAT YOUR RASH MAY BE CAUSED BY YOUR TEARS!!!!

Yes, hayfever pills may aid in reducing the problematic tears, and these pills are just a band-aid.  A solution or elimination of the problem is to eliminate the irritant------something very simple to try FIRST is

ZINC!!!!

Zinc is the body's natural antibiotic... this means that it will eliminate the cause of the irritant, and viola!!!

This is most likely the case if your upper lip and perimeter of the nose openings s experiencing a bit of irritation as well, these may not be affected as they are more robust skin cells than those surrounding the eyes.

If possible, gently scrub off the dead cells  (which contain the irritant from your sinuses) with a wash cloth to allow the new cells to replenish your skin.

Namaste.

The red rash I had all around the eye was caused by an "organic" lotion I had been using, but not around the eye area---until in haste I used it there also.  Next morning, the redness was all around the eye area, used several different anti-itch (Sarna, cortizone, etc.). It finally cleared up in a week, but left wrinkles just below the lower eyelid area that I never had before.  I've use eye cream there, astaxanthin cream, etc.  So far nothing has helped remove the wrinkles.

Sounds like prescription? I have a Derm appt this month just in case it happens again, since my PC said it's hard to get an appt unless you have an initial screening. The only thing I found that actually worked was a calendula cream called "The Rub" and I have been using it ever since and am fearful of trying any other "eye cream" on the market.

my daughter also having same skin problem....I am really worried.

I was using a calendula cream from the health food store, got a new tube, but it seems very drying now, so I've switched to using SARNA lotion for sensitive skin. I'm only using around my eye area and it seems to be clearing up the dryness. So far have not had another eye rash outbreak (knock wood!).
