Had the same issues and started taking CranActin. The odor went away within a few days - thank God! Went back to my doctor today to have my IUD put back in and had him test my urine and I still had some bacteria, so now I'm on lovely antibiotics for seven days - so not looking forward to a yeast infection!

Anyway, you should go see your doctor because you probably have a urinary tract infection. They'll take a sample and look at it under the microscope and if you don't mind posting back with an update. Best of luck!

I agree coming upon this forum was a blessing. I have talked to my health practitioners repeatedly and had STD as well as infection checks repeatedly for this mal odor.  Not to be gross but I was thinking they should just smell the damn swab so they knew what I was talking about. Recently occurred to me that since the job of the IUD is to irritate the uterus so nothing can grow, that it really is irritating it thus producing this foul smell. Totally makes a girl self conscious.

I have recently heard commercials for a non-surgical option for permanent birth control. I googled it and came up with Essure, which puts stints in your Fallopian tubes to block egg and sperm. I have had my IUD for 4 years now and am not having any more kiddos so I think I will check this out. Birth control shouldn't mean intimacy blocker right?!

Samantha, you should definitely be checked for a urinary tract infection. Your symptoms sound the same as mine. I began taking SuperCranactin, which really helped, then the day I went to get my IUD put back in, I had my doc check me and I still had bacteria, so he put me on an antibiotic for 7 days. Of course, I then had him prescribe me something for yeast, because that just seems to go hand-in-hand for me. Anyway, my UTI is gone, I'm back in business as far as birth control and will continue to take the Cranactin for my urinary tract health. Best of luck!

I’ve had the same problem and finally solved it, and it was so easy!!  I feel so much better and so much more comfortable now that it’s resolved.  I got a Mirena IUD about 2 months ago and I’ve had spotting and bleeding most days since I got it.  My doctor told me the bleeding should clear up after about 3 months.  I ended up noticing that my vaginal odor was getting worse and worse no matter how much I washed and I was feeling really embarrassed about it.  My doctor told me that because of constantly having blood in my vagina (even a small amount) I ended up with bacterial vaginosis.  Thank goodness the solution was simple.  My doctor told me to douche twice a day (I’ve only done it once a day) with a vinegar douche.  He specifically said not to use anything except vinegar and water.  I went to a drugstore to buy a douching product just to get the applicator (I bought summer’s eve douche – which should not be used because it has fragrance in it and it can make things worse).  I got a 1 liter screw-cap wine bottle, washed it out and rinsed it well and mixed 2 tbs of apple cider vinegar (you can also use plain white vinegar) and filled the rest with water.  I refill the applicator from the summer’s eve product every day and use it in the shower.  The reason this works is because the vinegar makes your vaginal PH more acidic (the way it’s supposed to be) so that the bad bacteria die out.  It made a huge difference after just one use and that was about a week ago.  I can’t believe how much better I feel now.  If you want to get something that’s a little loger lasting than douching, I also bought a product called Rephresh which is great too.  Just google it to get more info.  Good luck girls!  Don’t worry – there’s a simple solution that you can do today for virtually no cost.

Hey phoebe2370.  I totally get it.  Seriously, you won't believe the difference... I know how you feel with wondering if other people can smell it.  It's a really simple thing to do, and since you've got douching products already, so you have an applicator.  It's really not good to use the ones with fragrance because it can actually make it worse.  Your PH is off so it's allowing bad bacteria to grow.  It seems like I can use the same douching applicator (washing it in between use) several times.  My doctor said to do it twice a day, but like I said, I've only been doing it once.  Let me know if you notice a difference as quickly as I did.  Also, I used apple cider vinegar so I don't know if regular white vinegar works as well.  My doctor has said just to use regular white vinegar but I read online that apple cider is better.  I'm here for you if you have any other questions.

actually i still get periods for the last year now? i didnt think you were suppose being on the mirana? i'm going to try just the vinger & water, hoping it clears up but the other problem i have is that the iud device keeps shifting?

Hi phoebe2370. I still get my period too, and I have the Mirena as well. I don't know if I'll always get it though because like I said, I've only had it for 2 months. My doctor said that it all depends on the woman. Some women he has used the iud with have not had any bleeding or periods, other it's much lighter. Most days I have coloured discharge to medium bleeding. If I think of it, I'll post on here if ever that stops. If it doesn't stop, I'll get it taken out after 6 months because I'd rather go back to the sympto-thermal method I was using before for birth control than have spotting just about every day. I'm not sure about it shifting though since I don't have that problem. Hopefully your doctor can help you decide if this is the best option for you. Good luck!!! :)

In that aspect it has gotten lighter over the last 3 years. I would prefer to just go back to the old fashion birth control the Pill:) had light periods, no smell or bacteria growing & no shifting of a device. I will just see what my Dr. saids is best for me:) For now, trying the vinger solution:)

When I came across this I actually got pretty choked up. I have had my Mirena for 4 years. I have had the odour problem for about 2 years and for the life of me could not figure out what was up. I'm afraid to go out with people because I feel like everyone can smell me or something. Thank you for posting your question. It's so great to know I'm not alone. Heading in to see my doctor tomorrow to have it removed. I hope this goes away.

I developed a very unpleasant odor and unusual discharge a few months ago. Only showed up during sex. Very strong. Phew! So I went to a walk in clinic cause my regular doctor was gone. With the symptoms I described, the doctor surmised I had a BV infection. No internal was done. I took the antibiotics for a week but the smell was still there. I was freaking out thinking I had an STD or some bizarre ailment. About 10 days after I finished the antibiotics, I went to the washroom one morning and out came a tampon. I figured It had been there for two months. As disgusting as this was, i'm glad that this is all it was. As soon as it disappeared, so did the smell and the urge to frequently urinate. I do not normally use tampons and the string had come off.
I feel pretty silly . . .so I wanted others to know . .just in case!

I went to the Dr on monday....the IUD was about to come out...so she took it out.  The Dr probably thinks thats what was causing the odor...it was probably working its way out which was causing a discharge of bad odor and then cause i was douching with a fragrence didnt help.  So i'm back on the pill but she came me some information on the latest birth control called Essure that is a lifetime of birth control.  Its a coil that is inserted into your fallopian tubes non-surgically done as an outpatient.  Since i don't want anymore kids....thinking i'm going to go with it?  has anybody heard of this or done it and if so, has any complications with odor?  kind of paranoid now with anything inserted in my body! lol
