I have the mirena iud for almost 2 years and for the last couple months the odour and discharge has been getting worse. It has a fishy scent and i feel ashamed when im with my partner and even worse when i am work coz i can smell it and i am sure others can too and this is even though i am using lactacyd. The iud has also caused irregular bleeding
I have had the mirena IUD twice. The first time was great i had it in for 2 years with no issues, then it fell out on its own. 5 months later i had a new one inserted, i have no complications other than this horrific smell and discharge, for months without any explanation . i was tested for any type of infection and it came back negative. i just had the mirena removed 3 days ago and the smell is already gone! get the devil contraption out of you! it was an easy method of birth control but the smell was too much for me!
I've had Mirena in since November... I spot almost all the time- I also notice the smell and I have NEVER dealt with that before. It's horrible. I just wonder if it's the constant spotting?

so glad i found this!! so I've had my copper iud for over a year, and i notice a month after getting it i started having this strong odor. it ranges from a fishy smell, to a sour smell and it does not go away!!! I've been to the doctors and after having multiple tests done they always say its BV. Ive tried multiple treatments from home remedies, from antibiotics yet it still comes back.. esp after having intercourse with my partner. i don't know what to do!! I've been struggling with BV for so many years now, but i have never ever had a unpleasant odor.. Makes me feel so uncomfortable. I think its coming from IUD I'm sure of it.
I have had my IUD in for about 9 years now. I've been having a foul, metal like smell that intensifies before and after menstrual cycle. I have been to gyno but they just look at me like I'm crazy. I will be removing it in the next couple of weeks.
I have had an iud for 7 years I'm on my second I never in the five years of having my first one had s problem no pain periods or smell this one has given me nothing but pain sporting and now this smell it's going
So glad I found this! I had mine put in about 8 months ago & the smell has gotten worse as the months progress. It's ruined countless underwear with mild staining. So embarrassing. I think I am going to take a hint from the other comments, and make an appointment with my Gynecologist. I think I want this out. I don't douche and never had this smell before this was inserted. This was not one of the side effects listed in the literature I was given. Will keep you posted. Would also like to hear how others have resolved the issue.
I did test and everything and everything keeps coming back normal....i come to realise alot of ppl who have iud mirena get the same vaginal ordor which is so embarrassing
I've been told by my gyno don't douche that it doesn't work for long and it upsets the good bacteria. Try taking good quality probiotics to balance you out. If that don't work then have it removed
Totally can relate to this!! I had mine taken out coz I really couldn't deal with the change in smell, I hardly had any smell before! Thankfully all back to normal litetally within days of getting the coppet iud removed!
Geez 9 years of that. What a trooper you are :) I only put up with 3 months.
I have been using peroxide to flush my bag for years. Although I've never had an odor problem it's nice to flush after your period or just feel fresh. I recently got the Mirena and have the odor problem everyone describes. Peroxide works. I just had to up it from twice a month to daily. But make sure to take an OTC probiotic BV pill daily because the peroxide also flushes out the good bacteria. Sometimes I'll just open up a capsule and put the half with the powder in there if I have been slacking and want quick results.
