My 20 year old son has the same problem. He drinks Dr. Pepper and Coke from cans by the case with no problems. When he drinks a fountain soda, he gets severe cramping and at times, some diarrhea. He laid off of the fountain soda for over a month with virtually no symptoms, the had fountain soda this weekend. The symptoms were back within a couple of hours. He too has gone to the doctor, and later had a colonoscopy to check for issues, but all tests were negative. This is very puzzling, and we are seeking an answer.

I have this problem, too. It is not so much naseous as it is discomfort. I have concluded (with no professional medical opinion) that it is the carbonation. I have always had an inability to burp (i burp like once a year) and carbonation causes a build up of gas in my stomach. Someone mentioned it was an issue with a milkshake also...did you rink the milkshake through a straw? Because when I do I have the same issue and I think it is because of the air that gets caught in the straw. Sodas from the fountain are more carbonated, which explains the toleration of canned and bottled soda. I have no medical proof or cure of this, but if anyone does I'd love to hear it!

Have same problem as everyone.  So do others in my family.  Tested, it's not diabetes for me.  A caffine allergy makes sense but I don't get it tea (coffee yes).  I'm thinking it's an acid thing.  My sister has tried taking a 1/4 tsp of baking soda mixed with 3 oz of water prior to eating and she claims it has corrected the issue.  I'll have to try and write back.

You're allergic to aspartame! It's the sweetener they use in all DIET sodas. It is very common. My ex was allergic to it and every time he would drink anything "diet" he would get very sick. Talk to your doctor!

I'm from uk, we don't have free refills in restaurants much, but I have heard of it in some places, be interesting to know if people are more ill from places that do this. Maybe they put something in the drinks to stop them losing profit from freebies.

I have experienced SEVERE diarrhea after drinking fountain soda, as well.  Both instances (yes, it happened twice...took me the 2nd time to realize what caused it) I drank non-diet pepsi or coke products.  The reaction was sudden and severe.  I can drink caffenated soda with a straw from a can or bottle with no issues.  I tried a non-caffeinated root beer from the fountain just yesterday and ended up in the bathroom as well.  It's got to be the increased fructose/sugars.  Most fountain sodas are formulated differently - using more syrup so when you mix it with ice, it tastes better.  But not better enough to go through this again!!!

All diet sodas or anything diet has aspartame. Do some research on aspartame and what you find may be surprising.

You guys should look up "sucrose malabsorption" - it's the body inability to digest sugars properly. High frucstose corn syrup drinks tend to cause bloating, nausea, and diarrhea.

I've narrowed my particular sensitivity (resulting in the upset stomach and other gastric/digestion problems) to any soda with yellow coloring (Mt. Dew, Mello Yello, even "soda-like" energy drinks of the "yellow" or citrus variety).  I can drink other soda without experiencing any symptoms.I am actually quitting all soda, though - just for the diversity of health reasons.  My plan is to try to drink alot more water, and very little other beverages, sticking to primarily water with occasional fruit juices, and limiting coffee to one per day (can't give that up).

if it's diet sodas it's happening with it's probably the artificial sweetner. do you know that people who drink diet soda verses people who drink regular soda actually gain more weight?! just because it's diet doesn't mean it's better for you. bottled drinks are under pressure and that's what keeps them fresh for so long, fountain drinks are not, they're in huge bags so they have more preservatives than bottle because theres no pressure keeping them fresh.

The Fountain taps aren't being cleaned. It's caused by what is called a coliform bacteria. It makes a lot of people sick really fast. Complaints aren't reaching the right people. Soda fountain Nozzles HAVE to be cleaned daily, usually in a mild bleach water mix to kill the bacteria. A lot of young workers overlook this task because they just want to get of work and do other things.

I agree to this as with me the experience of drinking a diet coke diet pepsi, pepsi, coke has been the same. I would either get a very bad stomache upset or develop gastritis, So i too have given on all aernated drinks that are black. I am fine if i am having a small glass of sprite or 7 -Up.

I have the same exact problem!! I am only 13 and it's hard to fit in with other people without drinking sodas in parties, et. I throw up everything I ate that day after drinking soda, even a little bit. Once, I almost literally died because I had no water and so on for 2 days. Can anyone help? It's not caffeine allergy or anything like that. Hope anyone can find an answer to this. Just thinking about it makes me feel sick. :'(
