Hi! :-)
I'll get more into my details later but I was going to get some tea tree oil based on what I've read here but I would like to know how you all use it?
I am very scared because my urethra is very sensitive and obviously in pain all the time but it seems that most of you have the same problem as me so if you say tea tree oil wont hurt me then I believe you. I just want to be sure how to use it?
I know it's an antiseptic and it can sometimes sting or burn, does it not sting or burn intensely when used on your urethra that's already inflamed?
Also, how do you apply it? I saw one user say to dilute it.
I guess you just rub it directly on the urethra?
Do you do this daily?
Your help would be much appreciated!
Thanks so much and I am SO sorry that so many on here have this same torturous problem as I do. :-(
I would like to get to the bottom of WHY this is happening to so many of us?
You never used to hear of this before... just like so many other new ailments...
We are their guinea pigs that's for sure! >:(

Oh and I also wanted to ask-what kind of soap you guys use to wash down there anyway?
Is there anything that wouldn't further irritate a very inflamed urethra?

Hi
Although i wish there weren't so many people affected by this, it's slightly reassuring that it's not just me! I'm 23 and have had this for 4 years. Symptoms seem exactly the same - seemed to start from one really bad bladder infection and now almost mock-infection symptoms. Sometimes i think dehydration affects my pain. I also suffer from bowel problems and this too can make the pain worse. Just started drinking coconut water which seems to help with this, but pain still occasional. Makes me unable to concentrate when in pain and work is starting to be affected.
Doing things like using soaps and tea-tree are things I can't even imagine - far too sensitive when at its worst. Or do you use these when the pain has gone?
Have been re-referred to a urologist and really hope he can shed some light on this.
Will definitely update if anything becomes of it.
I know how depressing this can be, and i think we've all had enough...Let's hope for some answers soon. At least we know that other people are going through the same thing, even when you just want to give up.
Good luck everybody :-)

I am a woman of 56 years of age. I started experiencing pain in my Urethera over 3 weeks ago. Since then not only is my Urthera painful but my entire groin area as well. I also appear to have lost weight noticeably in the groin area as well. My doctor confirmed that I had Interstitial Cystitis by performing the Cystoscopy and said she checked and my Urthera is not swollen and the bladder looks good. She said I should return in 2 to 3 weeks for a checkup. After 1 week I am in still alot of pain. It kept me up last night. I did not want to keep taking the pain medication but perfhaps I will have to. I guess I cannot understand while my entire groin area is in pain. This worries me that there might be another problem that is existing with this. Does this sound familiar to anyone else? Perhaps I will try that tea tree oil that someone suggested.

Hey everyone,
I saw this thread and had to post my experience. I went through the exact same thing in college--I was going to the doctor about once a month for a year with UTIs. Sometimes the tests would come back with bacteria, sometimes they would come back negative. I could never figure out what was wrong with me. I went to a urologist who stuck a very large stick up my urethra (with hardly any anesthetic) and actually stabbed me on the inside of my bladder. Imagine looking at a little tv with the inside of your bladder showing and blood pumping out of your bladder wall. The Dr. was like, "oops." She said I might have IC but it wasn't conclusive. She tried to tell me to change my whole diet and all that.

Long story short, on a whim I went to a place called The Health Nut which is an herbal/organic store. I wound up talking to the lady who owned the store, I told her my story, and she immediately said, "Marshmallow root and Slippery Elm root. Take it everyday for a few months and you will be fine." So I bought both out of desperation ($15 for both in most stores). TRY THESE SUPPLEMENTS!!!! They are nontoxic and don't mess up your body chemistry. They soothe and provide a mucous-like covering to the walls of your esophagus, stomach, bladder, etc. If you have inflammation due to acid reflux like I did, they will soothe it and the wounds will heal. Same with my bladder and urethra--I took the supplements religiously for a few months, and I take a pill here and there when I remember (once or twice every couple of weeks), and I haven't had a UTI in 4 years. It was a lifesaver. Also, a good supplement is D-Mannose powder. It's a form of sugar that, when it gets to your bladder and urethra, pulls the bacteria off of your bladder and urethra walls and flushes it out with your urine. It's a totally natural sugar that you can put in water and drink. That has been really great--I drink a glass after sex or if I feel dehydrated and susceptible to a UTI. YOU DON'T HAVE TO KEEP GOING TO DOCTORS AND TAKING ANTIBIOTICS! I'm not against conventional medicine, but in this case I've learned the value of traditional meds to treat and prevent. Hope this helps, let me know if you have any questions.

I've been having a pain in my urethra since June. I've been treated for UTIs (sometimes showing up positive, sometimes negative) yeast infections, and BV. None of the treatments have helped. I've been to a handful of urgent care facilities and my gynecologist. When I saw my gyno I asked her to test me for everything because I had been going crazy with this pain. She did and I only came back with yeast- probably a result of the four rounds of antibiotics I've had. Needless to say, I still have this pain. Today I was prescribed pain killers. I'm extremely upset because this only masks the problem. Sex is impossible and horribly painful and wrecks havoc on my body for hours afterwards with extreme burning. The doctor today (at urgent care) said that it may be hormonal and I could be having an extreme hormonal imbalance. I'm only 22 years old! I'm seeing a urologist later this month and another gyno next month. I will keep everyone posted.

I would like to add I tried the Slippery Elm Root and Marshmallow Root supplements for a week and they helped a lot for about a week but the pain came back out of nowhere. I highly suggest trying those along with D-Mannose powder and CranActin. I bought these all at Whole Foods. My doctor said they're safe to try, but you should ask yours too. :-) It's worth a try since they're all natural.

I'm truly disappointed with women's healthcare providers..will I ever be pain free again? Will I ever be able to have sex with my husband again? I feel hopeless.

Hello to all of you with this problem....we went through all these problems with my daughter who is now 17. All last year she was on antibiotics, the urologist kept trying different ones and none would help for any longer than a few days or a week. Finally I said ENOUGH! and took her to a Naturalpathic (sp?) doctor who suggested perhaps her body was overrun by YEAST (so many antibiotics - they kill the good bacteria as well as the bad). She put her on a very strict diet with absolutely no sugar (not even fruit) and no yeast products whatsoever. Also sold us some Probiotics (good bacteria) and some drops. We tried this diet for a couple of months (she also took the over the counter bladder tablets for pain) and....she has not been sick this whole year. I have also heard that caffeine is really bad for this condition....so try to refrain from that. Anyway, it worked for my daugher, maybe you could try a Naturalpathic doctor. It might also work for you, I hope so. God bless and good luck.

I am a 25 year old mother of 3. I was diagnosed with Medullary Sponge Kidney a year ago, when I got my first kindey infection ever. I thought that since we found it early, I'd be better off. Since then, I have passed a ton of stones, had a ton of infections, had issues with incontenece as well as urinary retention. I go to the urologist every other week....but nothing is ever done for me, and typically if I am having pain with No infection, the doctor seems to just basically ignore the fact that I am Hurting...I frequently have cystos done in the office and I have to have CT scans every 3 months. When I told my doctor that I was having intense urethra pain all day every day, and especially after sex, he told me that I may have urethral diverticulitis. I had an MRI with contrast to see if any really weak spots would show....and when he couldnt pinpoint a spot, he just gave up. I also have high blood pressure, due to my kidney issues, but they wont put me on BP meds bc they say it needs to be that high to maintain kidney health. My high BP causes me to have migraines, which basically prevent me from doing anything...I went to the ER last weekend with a migraine, told them of my urethral pain....my BP was 190/130 and had been all day. The only think they did was shoot me up with pain meds, then sent me home. It seems to me that all of these things have to have something in common, and something I can do to feel better. any advice would be appriciated.

Hi everyone. Wow, I can't believe after searching the internet and reading on so many different forums how many women have this problem! I feel for ALL of you. I started getting UTI's about 12 years ago. For the last few months, I have been having this constant tingling and burning in my urethra. It does get so bad sometimes that I can not function during the day, which is pretty bad considering I have 3 kids to take care of!
I just finished a round of macrobid a week and a half ago for a UTI. Which, by the way, weaked havoc on my body! I went back to the doc on Wednesday and even though it felt like I had a UTI, I didn't. This is the second time my doc has tried to figure out what's wrong in 3 months to no avail.
I also have read about having an overgrowth of candida yeast which also gives you lots of problems, so I started taking probiotics. I also read about D-Manose, so I odered it and have been taking it for about a week. It coats your bladder and uethra so no bacteria can cling to it's walls. Honestly, this has aleady seemed to help some. I am not in as much pain as before. I am going to go to the natural food store and get slippery elm and marshamallow root, and also tea tree oil. I will come back and post whether they helped or not. I realize we have to give these natural remedies time to work. Also, I have decided to follow the diet guidelines for people who suffer from IC. Honestly, the main thing for me will be cutting caffeine!! BUt caffeine really is an irritant. ALso I have been dinking lots of water.
For everyone suffering with these problems, you are in my thoughts and prayers, and I will be sure to come back and post anything I can find that can help! I am not totally against traditional medicine but so many times the medicines I have been prescribed have made me either sicker, or given me new symptoms to deal with.
Don't forget, it could be a food allergy!!! Maybe try cutting out wheat, nuts, dairy, etc. until something is found. You never know.
I want to add that my mother took slippery elm root in tea form when she had an ulcer and it helped her!! Maybe it can do the same for our bladders and urethras since it forms a coating. And no side effects like traditional medicine. Another thing, which is SO hard at times, we need to try to relax and not be stressed (vey hard I know!) I decided to take a walk in the sunshine yesterday and just being out in nature lifted my spirits and relaxed me. I am not religious but I am spiritual and do believe in prayer as well.
I hope you all find relief soon. (((HUGS))) to you all. If anyone would like to send me a message please do, I would love to give and receive support!

I am 21 years and have suffered form chronic UTI symptoms since I was about 9. I even completely stopped drinking anything but water for 4 straight years, because anything with sugar in it seemed to give me one. It worked for a while and then I started getting them again. Instead of going to my gyno, I made an appointment with a urologist and he used a scope to look at my bladder and my urethra. He said that I had an irritation in my urethra causing all my painful symptoms and that antibiotics would fix this problem. He also said the reason for all my pain was that the irritation was not letting everything pass through my urethra in my urine. I took the antibiotic Cipro for 3 months straight and my symptoms completely disappeared and even though I NEVER drink any soda I still was able to drink gatorade, fruit juice sweet tea, etc.. things I hadn't been able to in years. He also compared the irritation to almost being like a common cold that could come back at any time. I went a full year and around the same time again (around March/April 2009) my symptoms came back. This next time he went ahead and prescribed me Cipro again for 3 months and said its probably the same problem again and if the antibiotics didn't work he would perform another scope. I still occasionally get pain sometimes like the onset of a UTI but flushing my bladder out with water by drinking a lot of water usually makes the symptoms go away. Im not sure if problems like these ever go away or can be permanently fixed, its comforting but also sad to know there are other women and young girls who go through the same ongoing battle with this that I have. Maybe one day they'll figure out something, or until then maybe we should all go on mystery diagnosis! There has to be some common underlying cause to all of our symptoms......if anyone knows please let me know!

I am very interested in the post below:

"Same as a lot of you - the swelling, pain, sometimes infection - sometimes no infection but all the symptoms. I went through this for years from teenager to 30s. Finally after every test imagineable, one urologist did a cysto that he was able to watch on a video monitor as he did it and discovered i had polyps just in the area where the urethra attaches to the bladder - odd place & hard to pick up. What was happening was that any time it got irritated (stress, caffeine, anything acidic) the polyps would swell and start closing off the urethra which caused all the symptoms. they went in and biopsied/cauterized the polyps and i haven't had problems in about 7 years (until now - concerned they may be coming back) but that was 7 years without the constantly recurring pain and symptoms. see if your doc can do this; polyps were easily overlooked with just the eye cysto."

I have been suffering from chronic pelvic pain for 3 1/2 years now and finally just last week I had a cystoscopy and my urogyn said I had polyps in my urethra. I have to see him next week to see how he wants to proceed but I am having trouble finding any info on the internet about urethral polyps and am very interested in what you said about the polyps swelling and starting to close off the urethra. What symptoms did you have and I know this is an old post but are you all better now. Is there anyone else out there with urethral polyps who can give me some info on what these things do and how I may have gotten them. I do see my doc on tuesday but am just kind of curious now. It's been a long time coming. Thanks to all

This is hell, and I am totally there with the feeling of hopelessness. I have been on vicodin for about 6 months now. It doesn't take the pain away, but I am some what funtional...go to work, take care of my 2yr old. I started getting UTI's during my period every month that would take several rounds of antibiotics to clear. In August, I had outpatient surgery to remove three cysts from my vaginal wall. After that the pain was unbearable. Finally after dealing with my PCP and GYN...I was able to see a urologist. This past week, I had a cystocopy which the urologist found nothing wrong with my bladder, but my urethra looked inflamed. He put me on another round of antibiotics...to no avail. I called him today to tell him that I was still in pain and if I should come in again. I was quite shocked and upset to hear him tell me that there was nothing more he could do for me. I am back on lexapro (again...I had postpartum depression with my son). My husband and I haven't been able to have intercourse in almost a year now...due to the cysts, UTIs and now urethral. And during all this our insurance change to I have to go blab my schpeal to a new psychologist. I want my life back!!!
