I am a 54 year old female who has NOT had a period in 3 years. NOW I am spotting with a slight vaginal blood (bright red to brownish) discharge. No serious cramping. Tricare did their pap smear (only allowed one once every 3-5 years now days) last year, was told no problems..(I did have fibroids and ovarian cysts, to which tricare told me, once menopause is complete, they would shrivel up and go away on their own. Blood tests (of female hormones) a few years back, also reflected I was almost done with menopause..
Can anyone explain this to me..as to what is happening, since tricare tells me, nothing is wrong because all the tests say they are within normal range

I am aged 59 and went through menopause between 50 and 53 years. I have had no more bleeding since I was 53. Today blood gushed out of my vagina but now it has stopped. I had sore breasts for three days prior but thought nothing of it. I am going through a lot of stress at the moment and wondered if that could have done it. I feel like I have period pains. Of course I am scared it is cancer of the womb. I will go to the Dr if it happens again.

I stopped menopause at 53 years, I am now 59 years. A few weeks ago fresh red blood poured down my legs. It stopped quite quickly. I did a check and the blood had definitely come from my vagina. I am under a lot of stress and I have put it down to this. I am going to the Dr on Wednesday 13 March, I am in New Zealand, and I will mention it to my Dr. This happened to my sister when her husband walked out on her for his rich secretary who was 17 years older than him. My sister haemorraged but she was in her 20s and had an 11 month old and a 3 year old so as she was getting regular periods the Dr told my sister her womb had opened due to the shock of her husband walking out. She is a healthy 64 year old now, so it was nothing. Hope this helps. SandieC. Liz Duff.

My periods had stopped at the age of 35. I was told, I hit my menopause early ..yes very early...I am now 43 and had fluttering, cramping and sore breast...little signs i had when i was pregnant...went to the Dr ..I will be going in for an ultra sound next week to see what is going on...I am not pregnant, but symptoms are still very much present...it also is very unpleasant when i have sexual encounters with my husband ...today i have noticed a bit of cramping and also dark brown bleeding...another sign of which i had when i was pregnant...crazy as it seems...I did take a pregnancy test through the Dr. and it came out negative...talk about an emotional roller coaster ..sigh...anywho...I will find out hopefully something from the ultra sound...

Thank you "Guest" 2 hours ago. My Dr is sending me for a scan in case I have cancer of the womb. My womb was scanned two years ago and it was clear. You have dark brown bleeding which is common after menopause. Mine was bright red like a normal period. I do admit being scared about one thing - my breasts are sore too. Have not had sex for 14 years so don't know if it would hurt or not. 35 is young to go through menopause. I had no bleeding when I was pregnant with my three children. Try to find out if you really had menopause at 35 but if you haven't bled until the age of 43 and it was not a real period I guess they are right. I do know a lot of women who have had early menopause like you. Make sure they check your hormones by blood tests. Good luck. Could you let me know how you get on and I will let you know how I get on. I am being seen at our Public Hospital so I will be on a long waiting list I suspect. If I bleed again they will take me earlier. Take care & thank you. Liz Duff.

CindyLouWho59. Please see my reply to "Guest Below". I bled down my legs but it stopped after one hour. Yes I will post my results on here. I am in New Zealand and as I am not "Top Priority" don't think they will see me for two months. CindyLouWho59 please do not be scared. I was terrified for 10 minutes and then I said to myself no it is stress. The Dr is just making sure with me because my father's only sister died of cancer of the womb in her 40s and my father's mother died of cancer of the womb. Liz Duff.

I am 52 and have not had a period for 10 years.  I started spotting or staining red just like a regular period 5 days ago.  When I googled this I was surprised to see so many women have the same problem as myself.  There are a lot of post on here with no real answers.  I to am worried and I guess since I cannot find an answer I will follow your all's leads and call the doctor.  Thanks All

I am 46 and have not had a period for 2 years. Two days ago (on Mother's Day!), I noticed light bleeding with clots and some brown discharge. At first I thought I got my period, but the blood is not at all like my old periods. I have had some cramping too. I have not been under any stress, so know it's not stress-related. I have been on HRT, bio-identical hormones, since blood test revealed I had NO hormones of my own (about 3 years ago). HRT was a life-saver because I had severe hot flashes every 5-10 minutes, intense mood swings and heart palpitations.  I also had periods with severe cramping and excessive gushing/bleeding, some lasting for several weeks so I was happy they stopped. I had 3 polyps removed before starting hormones. My sister had fibroids resulting in a hysterectomy, so I'm mostly concerned that I have one or the other. I requested a referral to an OB/Gyn but my doc wants to do a pap first and cannot get me in for another 6 weeks.

Everything I've read says that bleeding after menopause is NOT normal and that I should see a doc asap, preferably while I am still bleeding. But then I came here and read that so many of you have experienced this and your doctors are saying it's normal (5-10 years post-menopausal???). I don't believe it is normal. Maybe they don't know what else to say when tests come back normal, but maybe they should do more tests? I also think those of you with fibroids should be more proactive rather than believing they will just shrink on their own and go away. At least go in regularly to check that they are indeed shrinking. Also, if you are gushing blood due to fibroids you may have a dangerously low hemoglobin (which could be lethal during a flight due to the cabin pressure).

I wish more of you would return to say how things are going. Only one person returned to post results of their tests. I've bookmarked this page and will make every effort to post an update.

My OB-GYN told me some women experience thinning of the uterine lining that can cause this. She recommended a scan if the pap smear wasn't normal (it was normal!!) Now I wonder how she would know if my ovaries are ok too, and wonder if I should worry myself into taking the  CA-125 test (that isn't always accurate)....I had my "brown spotting" 9 years after menopause! Nothing before then???
