Another lady with this experience checking in. Had my colposcopy two days ago and I started noticing this weird tissue discharge and odd smell within the past 24 hrs. I was also told to wear a pad for the next two days and that I might have some blackish discharge from that mustard colored paste mixed with blood. But nothing about this. I just can't believe that our doctors wouldn't tell us about this, when is it clearly a super common side effect of the procedure.

I had had a colposcopy done last spring after an abnormal pap and remember it as being very noninvasive and was told I could continue coming yearly for my PAP.  After relocating, I had to find a new Gyno.  Have a PAP, all things seem normal.  I am informed that my results are abnormal and I am asked to return a week later for a colposcopy and possible biopsy.  This time around was VERY uncomfortable.

I'm a pretty tough cookie when it comes to things like this, but it got to the point of the exam where I was having/feeling cramps like I never had before.  I don't cramp during my cycle, so this was bend over in half wanting to curl up in the fetal position cramps.  Male doctor, female nurse to supervise.  After reading all of these previous posts, it seems that we were all very uninformed of the whole process.  I was VERY uncomfortable during the process, the cramps were excruciating.  My cervix sits father back then most.  The doctor also was unable to take any sample from my uterus as I was already in so much discomfort.  I became light headed, dizzy, and nauseous by the time they were almost done.

The 15min drive home was a nightmare, I wanted to curl up and lay on my side (I had to drive myself home).  Once in my front door, I laid down in the fetal position.  Put on some PJs and tried to sleep off the cramps.  I was given some water and ibuprofen at the doctors office before I left.

I was informed of possible spotting or discharge of the dye used for the procedure.  The day of and the days following there was no spotting aside from some of the "coffee grounds" from time to time that seemed ok (similar to later in my monthly cycle).  Now three days later, after going to the restroom, I began to feel like I needed to pass something from my girl bits/va jay jay whatever term you are comfortable with.  I looked into the toliet to see what looked like (thank god for these forums) what I would expect to be a 5in long to half an inch wide miscarriage, chicken skin, alien like brain mass, va jay jay poo, speckled with coffee grounds.  I haven't been in pain or crampy since the day of the exam.  Seeing this now three days later DEFINATELY had me worried.  I left a message for my doctor to inform him and confirm that all things are normal (more like a SNAFU in my head)  I hope this is the first and last of these kinds of discharge.  I will try to repost if I hear of anything from my doctor.  I just wish I knew that this was something to expect.

Side Note: it wasn't until I got home and was worried about the amount and discomfort of the cramping that I looked more into the biopsy process.  I cannot look at a Biopsy Punch without wanting to get sick (ugh)

Just received a message back from my doctor confirming that the mass is most likely a combination of a blood clot and clotting agent that was used on my cervix to stop the bleeding after the procedure. Thankful for the QUICK response but a bit annoyed that I wasn't given the heads up.

Thank you all so much. I just experienced the discharge of a skin-like deflated pouch/tissue mass about 4 inches in length, filled with a gritty coffee grinds-like material (sorry, pretty gross stuff.) Had my third colposcopy in life performed 3 days ago but never had this before and was way freaked out until I read these shared experiences.

Thank you ladies for sharing your experiences and for creating a community resource for those of us that have had colposcopies. When I started reading about the procedure it sounded like my cervix would just be examined under a microscope and maybe I would have samples taken if something didn't look right. So I didn't stress and my blood pressure results reflected my calmness going in. My female Dr told me right off the bat that I would have biopsy work done and I started to worry about how that would feel. I immediately asked how many samples would be done (4) and if she had any pointers for decreasing pain (I did not take midol before and now regretted it). She told me some people said coughing while having the sample taken helped. So my Dr counted to 3 and I let out as many little coughs as I could and felt no pain. Then she said there was something else she would have to do that she had no tips for :( so I told her I would talk her ear off to distract her and I did. After she was done she told me to expect coffee grounds and to wear pads. She also told me not to douche, have sex or submerge myself in water ( I had planned to go in a lake that week ;( When I got home it set in....I silently cried on the floor in fetal position, feeling so raw and uncomfortable down there. That night I had the hardest time falling asleep as I kept going over my procedure and what it entailed. So the next day the weird tissue discharge started. I thought maybe I had lazily left toilet paper up there (weird) I kept expecting coffee grounds but then kept getting thin paper looking bits. Its been four days now and I just don't know what to expect when I go to the restroom. When I wipe after peeing its just interesting and yeah there is a smell that can't be wiped away :( Oh yeah and to top it off we just wait and wait for our results to come in. I am grateful for this forum, for open and honest women that post and for breath that allows me to recenter and not fixate on the uncomfortable images, feelings/emotions and gnarly discharge that comes out!

Hey all, I've had two colposcopys and this always happens, it's completely normal. It's from the stuff they put on your cervix after the biopsies to clot the blood. It can be a white, gray, yellow, brown, and/or dark red. It can last sometimes 10-14 days so don't freak out too much. I know it's a horrible experience so good luck and positive vibes to all of you. Just remember to keep up on your exams and get everything taken care of ASAP.

hi all, I wish I had found this post on Sunday whilst I was experiencing giving birth to an alien form 3 days after my procedure.  I also have a funny smell and have been told not to have hot baths, use tampons or have sex.  Thank God it's not just me

I'm so glad I came across this! I also started researching discharge after biopsy. I had mine done 4 days ago and my Dr. Said I would see some spotting and ash like discharge. I did see this the first 2 days and just today I saw the chicken like skin most of you described. This was so scary and started researching. Thank you to all of you for your input now I feel better about learning that this is normal and common.

Thank you, ladies! I've never had this done until about two days ago.

I'm so sorry your doctors didn't even say anything about the tissue part of the discharge. Mine made sure to keep me well informed, but it's hard to pay attention when you're being probed like that.

She DID say something along the lines of, "when it happens, don't freak out, that's not your cervix falling out!" Well, i freaked out a little anyway. Lucky for me, i found you. Thanks for the reassurance! :)

(Ironically, the capta they want me to type in is 'comfortable' LOL)

Not major at all:) Colpo done 3 days ago- which was NOT painful or horribly uncomfortable as reported by tons of women on blog boards referring to colposcopy procedure. It was a little longer than pap smear examine and honestly the vinegar rinse stung more at the end than the biopsys-3 areas. My doctor explained to expect all sorts of stuff will be coming out for next 7-10 days so just wear a pad and you'll be fine. The adhesive used for the liquid band aid is the cause so don't freak out;)
