I just had my mirena IUD placed this morning. It was the most painful experience. I screamed at one point because of the pain. The nurse gave me 2 ibuprofen afterwards. My color must have changed because they offered me apple juice too. I laid there for 10min until I got up to drive home. I was moaning the whole way back. I've been rotating ibuprofen and Tylenol. Yes that's how bad it hurts. I've had it inserted in the past and it did not feel like this. I feel like my lower abdomen is tender and sore. I've been in bed with a heating pad. Hopefully this will be gone by tomorrow and I can get back to normal. I can't even bend over to pick up anything. This is beyond period cramping. Hopefully I didn't rupture anything.
I've had the mirena inserted today. Had to go to a gynecologist due to the pill causing a cervix issue so I was already tender plus I was on my period. I'm not going to lie, it hurt me, felt like a mild contraction but I didn't swear (i wanted to) I had tears and was squeezing the nurses hand tight while the Dr did her thing. It's been 5 hours now and just have slight period pain which I do suffer quite badly anyway.
I just had my third one placed two hours ago! I'd like to tell you it gets easier after having several but it doesn't! It hurts worse the third time than it did the first time or the second time. My doctor pulled my old one and placed the new one within minutes. I have no bleeding and minimal cramping.
My doctor did tell me that my cervix is getting more narrow with age. I'm not sure that's a good thing when it comes to placing a IUD. If you can wait and have it done just before your cycle or at the end of it, I'd highly recommend doing it than! However, I've not had a period for seven years and that wasn't an options for me...
Thought I would write about my experience about having an IUD inserted yesterday afternoon, if there is one thing I've learnt today it is DON'T read the horror stories that you read on the internet!!
I'm not usually one to write on things like this but I wanted to make the point of sharing my experience because thanks to threads like this I've been scared out of my mind to have an iud inserted & have chickened out of having one several times but always wanted to have one as hormonal contraception does not agree with me.
I am 25 and have an 8 month old son born via c- section so I never given birth vaginally but I did dilate to 8cm.
So basically like most people considering the iud I did my research beforehand & came across hundreds of stories online about people saying that insertion is worse than childbirth & is like labour contractions so spent days worrying, turned up to my appointment like a nervous wreck I was shaking so much anticipating this god awful pain that women have been going on about.
I was actually scheduled to have my copper coil inserted this Monday coming but as I started my period 3 days ago I called up the sexual health clinic to see if they could fit me in this week as I read it is much easier to have the coil inserted during the menstrual cycle as the cervix is opened slightly so there is no need for you to be dilated which from what I have read is the most painful for women if you have it done when you are not menstruating or if you haven't had children before.
I also took 2 ibuprofen 45 minutes before my appointment as advised to reduce cramping.
Soooo down to the actual procedure...you have a nurse in there to hold your hand and the doctor lubricates one finger and inserts it into my vagina, this doesn't hurt but because I am shaking so much because I'm expecting the procedure to be so painful she has to try several times before she can finally check where my womb is. Like I said this bit doesn't hurt it's just slightly uncomfortable but IT DOESN'T HURT.
Then she places the speculum which holds your cervix open, this just feels a bit cold but again this doesn't hurt you can hardly feel it in there. She then takes the sound and measures the size of my uterus, I didn't even realise she had done this until she told me she had finished.
Then she tells me she is about to insert the IUD...I grip the nurses hand for dear life nearly crying expecting the worst pain of my life...I'm waiting for this for about 30 seconds...then the doctors says "right that's it all done!"
What???? Where is this crippling agony I've read all about????
The whole iud insertion process I didn't feel a single thing, the worst bit was the examination with her finger and literally all that is is someone inserting a finger inside you and like I said that doesn't hurt.
I actually start laughing and say to the doctor "is that it?!" And she laughs too and says "don't believe everything you read on the internet!"
I have to sit on the bed for a few minutes just in case I start to feel dizzy (which I don't) and then she takes my blood pressure and off I go! I drove home fine and felt completely normal and carried on my day as usual.
A few hours later I did get a little dull period type pain so I just took 2 paracetamol and it hasn't come back since, we all get cramps we are women!
So please if you are considering a copper coil (I have the Nova 380) please don't come on threads like this and scare yourself silly like I did because honestly I didn't feel a thing, do it correctly and time your appointment at a time that you will be menstruating so that your cervix is open and take some painkillers beforehand and it is an absolute doddle, I have a friend who has had it done who has never had a child and she was the same as me she didn't even realise they had done the procedure!
You have to remember that most people only write negative things on the internet never positive, the only reason I have shared a positive experience is because anyone that reads threads like this and is put off by having a coil really doesn't need to worry- the worst bit of having a coil fitted was reading all the horror stories and having the nurses calm me down only for me to have a procedure that I didn't even feel and me feeling very silly about it afterwards :')
I'm now looking forward to having non hormonal contraception that I don't have to worry about for 5 years, and if I do get the odd cramp then I'll take a few painkillers and get on with it, no big deal!
I've not had any cramps since and even if I do get any I'd rather take 2 tablets and get on with things than sit there with a hot water bottle all night scaring people on the internet, the worst bit about the whole iud experience was reading threads like this.
I had my IUD inserted yesterday and also experienced a severe cramping pain. However, besides bleeding a little, some cramping, and a little nauseous feeling,I'm fine. I've emailed my doctor about the strings being too long but I have no other complaint really. Apparently, IUDs can create serious issues and have major side effects if the size of your uterus is either too sma or too big. The doctors are NOT supposed to insert the IUD until checking your uterus size and concluding that it is a good size for the IUD. You could be experiencing problems maybe due to incompatibility between your uterus size and the IUD.
Don't do it, it was as painful and awful as everyone has said. I was sick and felt tortured. Had I known how painful it would be I would never have had it inserted. I had mine taken out after a year of painful sex and complications. I am still having complications and my current Dr. (I switched Dr.s, he inserted it a week after my period when my uterus was not open) cannot determine how to treat me. It's very frustrating.
I had the Mirena IUD inserted today. I started my cycle yesterday but hadn't done any research on the pain that the insertion would cause. My doctor has does many of the procedures and delivered both of my babies so I was relaxed and confident in her. She had a hard time getting to my cervix and asked me to push down on my lower abdomen to push the cervix closer to her and keep it in place. While it was painful for about 15 seconds, it worked, but then a few seconds later I felt faint and had to lay down. She said the feeling was typical b/c opening the cervix can trigger a vagus nerve response which includes fainting, nausea and the feeling of needing to go to the bathroom. I felt all of those things. It took about 30 min for me to feel better with juice and a cold washcloth.
It seems there's quite a range in experiences and healthcare provision has a large bearing on this. If you're unaware of potential issues and don't know what you don't know, it's luck of the draw if you're at a decent GP practice .
- I didn't have a choice of Doctor.
- I was told by the practice receptionist that I couldn't have it done during my period and I had to wait an extra two weeks for another appointment as a result.
- Wasn't informed that painkillers /pain would be a big issue.
- Was told just before that I might find it "uncomfortable".
It was very painful and I was okay to continue despite this, but my body reacted badly as if I was going into labor: couldn't keep still because of spasms, went into shock and couldn't breathe properly. They couldn't open up my cervix wide enough and am being referred to have it done under anaesthetic. Will be changing doctors as soon as this referral goes through.
Those who say it wasn't that bad good for you. After two c-sections I had the Mirena IUD inserted. It was extremely painful. Maybe it was due to my cervix never being fully dilated due to c-sections that caused such pain. Maybe it was the doctor giving it. My stomach dropped, I started sweating, and was about to pass out. The device popped out the first time and she has to reinsert it. I have a high pain tolerance, but feel I should had been given something to soften my cervix. I rather of had another c-section than have an IUD inserted. Those who say they were wide awake during a c-section, ummm you are given an anesthesia block for the pain. Everyone is awake for c-sections. Don't criticize everyone else's experience because yours was easy. People with vaginal births tend to have an easier time or maybe your cervix is softer than others. Next time I have this procedure done I am asking for something for pain.
I had a similar experience! They tried to insert mine today and I was sweating, nauseated and shaky. After about 2 different attempts by my Dr. to get it in, I told her to just stop and take it out. If it wasn't going in easy I didn't want it in. The device kept bending so I don't think it fit my body properly....IDK. Once she stopped my adrenaline was so high that my body continued to shake, was tingly and I felt this weird vibration. I had to lie on the table for awhile and wait for the medicine they gave me to kick in and until the pain subsided enough for me to get dressed and make my way to my car.
I will NEVER attempt that again.
I had the Mirena fitted at 12pm today. I opted out of the anaesthetic which I wish I hadn't.
The pain of insertion was so bad I cried and felt sick for a while afterwards.
Since getting home the pain has been like severe cramping, feels like labour pains, this is after taking strong co_codomol and strong aspirin.
Anyone any advice if this is normal
Im scheduled to have mine done tomorrow and am terrified. Ive had 2 children and am 44 and been on the pill since i was 19 but they no longer want me on that because of stroke risks due to my age and family history. I dont want to experience all of the terrible side effects i keep reading about but i have to use something for birth control as I am married and my husband wont get a vasectomy and neither wants to use condoms every time. Help!! Im scared and dont know if Im just being a chicken or if Im right to feel this nervous. Can you help me??
I am 21 years old, never had a baby, and after years of different bc pills I wanted to try something I didn't have to remember to take everyday. I was well informed about the pain and risks and took Motrin an hour before my procedure. For the insertion I wasn't given anything but I was on my period. Pain was an 8.5/10, just in the verge of yelling and crying but it only took two minutes so I stuck it out. Right after I felt pretty dizzy but laid down for a bit and sipped on pop. Then the rest of the day I was on the couch because of cramps but overall found the experience manageable.
You obviously were one of the lucky ones. To suggest everyone is being over dramatic is quite disgraceful. I have had over 20 operations, extensive skin graphs with hundreds of stitches in me, I have had a hiatus herna repaired, a bartolin sist removed, stomach ulcers and I have ehlers danlos syndrome. And I have NEVER experienced pain like the insertion of the mirena, and yes after two seperate visits to have it inserted I vomitted twice from the pain and also fainted, i have also had what would be labour pains for 3 days now withno relief. People are on here sharing their experiences to help other women make decisions that are best for them, to suggest that women have sensationalised the pain is very uneducated and sad.
I am not sure about being over dramatic. Some people have retroverted uterus or very fine cervix openings. The pain can be so intense for some women they need a general anaesthetic. I work with a gynae and it is not the same for all women.
