Hi. I have some sort of mouth sores. I can see a thick, white patch on the inside of my cheeks and on my tongue. What could be the cause of my problem? Is it AIDS?

Hi. I had the same symptoms. I was diagnosed with leukoplakia. Leukoplakia is a harmless condition. However, if you have hairy leukoplakia, you may have AIDS. Hairy leukoplakia is seen only in people with HIV. If you have hairy, white patches, located on the lateral border of your tongue, you better check it out. Treatment means you will have to remove the source of irritation. If smoking was the cause of leukoplakia, you will have to quit smoking. Hairy leukoplakia, on the other hand, means you will have to take antiviral meds. Once you remove the source of irritation, leukoplakia should clear in a few weeks or months. Sometimes, lesions can be surgically removed.
