Your statement that babies go through very little discomfort during withdrawal is completely false. I am currently in NICU with my adopted newborn son. I have never seen anything as heartbreaking as this. He can't straighten his arms or legs, he tremors uncontrollably, he has to fight to eat, his respiration is erratic, he has horrible diarrhea and stomach cramps, he is in agony. We have been here for two weeks and will likely be here for 4 more. I can't stand by while the myths about methadone withdrawal in infants are perpetuated. If someone made a choice that caused an adult to experience this kind on torture they would be locked up. Methadone should not be administered to women unless they have an IUD. There is no excuse for causing this kind of pain to a newborn baby.

My son was born while his mother was on methadone, and he is 4 years old now.  His mother was also taking xanax.  He has experienced some developmental issues, and I am dealing with them the best way I know how.  I have a speach therapist that comes twice a week to catch him up on his speech, and also a physical therapist that is working with him on his fine motor skills.  The only issues I have noticed with him is he is later on walking, talking, etc. than the rest of the kids his age.  The best thing you can do is fo0llow the doctor's orders, and to hell with what everyone else says.  The past is the past, but do not continue to take illegal drugs, and be completly honest with the doctor about what you have taken so he or she knows the best way to treat your child.  I admit I was angry when I found out my baby's mother was on methadone while she was pregnant, but methadone is a whole lot safer than heroin, and unstable doses of opiates.  The baby needs stability on the dosage, and do not mix other drugs with the methadone especially benzodiazapines.  Mixing xanax or benzos with methadone is deadly if you are not pregnant, so you know it is extremley dangerous for a fragile fetus.  The department of social services will take your child as soon as it is born if any other drugs are found in the baby's system, and they take the first bowel movement from the child after brth, and test it for the prescence of drugs.  Theyt will be able to tell if you have taken any drugs other than the methadone as far back as the second month you were pregnant so do not risk it.  The important thing to remember is after you become pregnant your child's life depends on what you put in your body!!!  The baby's father should refrain from drug use with you, and this should be the turning point in your life.  No one can use drugs, and be a good parent!!!  I am a single father now, and I had to put my foot down and remove my son from his mother because she continued to use drugs after his birth.  I felt like this was a dangerous situation for my son to be in, and i am glad I made that choice.  This child is a blessing to you, and it will change your life when you see the love in your child's life.  My son saved my life because I was caught up in an awful heroin addiction when his mother became pregnant with him.  I was just blessed enough to recognize that I had to refrain from drug use to be a good father.  I've been clean for 4 years now, and I would'nt go back to that horrible life style for nothing in this world.  Good luck to you, and realize that you are worth it, and you can make it through this!!!

maybe you are one of the lucky ones who has never had a problem, cancer, diabetes whatever, drug addiction is a disease most people in the field believe that. Your comments whilst true, are not helpful on this site. Keep your black and white world where it should be maybe the middle east could accept you.

I'm worried about my baby and want to know if there's anything I can do to stop her legally, and if shed s doing it while she's pregnant I'm sure she will continue to do so after the birth

I agree except methadone withdrawal last way longer and is harder than heroin withdrawal due to the half life being about 6 times the half life of heroin ive done both and don't think either is a good choice..subutex taper over 2 weeks is the easiest way and is also an alternative to methadone during pregnancy

My daughter is 22 MTS old & I took methadone and xanax-under Dr supervision-& she was born healthy and came home with me the second day she was in this world. She had/has no problems, she is highly intelligent and may I add... U NEVER KNOW what a person's situation is, or what led them to the meds they are on. I lost 8 pregnancies because I didn't want to take meds while pregnant. The withdrawals I had caused contractions and ultimately miscarriage. So, while you sit on your high horse looking down, just remember... YOU NEVER KNOW!!! If not for the meds, I'd not be a mother now.

If you check out the withdrawals through the pregnancy it is more dangerous than continuing the drug
