I have had this problem for many years. It seemed to start with the drugs they gave me after a bad injury. But has gotten much worse latey. I have been to 3 doctors and none have an answer they just want to keep sticking things up there o.O . There fingers, camera's and I realy do not like that. I am shure it is the booze. I have not been able to find anything on this untill this thread! I get bright red blood and as stated that is the end of the line. I think the big point here is that the doctors seem to want to do all kinds of stuff to us(one's with the bleeding butt syndrome) that just cost alot of $. When the cure is to not drink. Well I am not a quiter! So I will find a way around this. Lets all do tests and come back and post the results. I have read here that eating and drinking water with the booze worked for one I will try that first. I have had many test done so all the bad things it could be have been ruled out. This is very bad for me I am from Wisconsin and it is a drinking culture.

Unfortunatley the answer for me was to stop drinking. I had pain and bleeding and had self diagnosed myself with a hemmorhoid. Through experimenting with not drinking I realized that the bleeding and pain were immediately relieved with abstinence. I've been a heavy drinker for years now and I think this is probably a fortunate realization for me. Seeing large amounts of blood in the stool after drinking is scary and eye opening. So hopefully I can contain my urge to drink, and if not bloody stool is always a strong incentive.

It's nice to know I'm not alone. I'm 31 years old, female, and have had this maybe a year or so.

Today, something happened that totally freaked me out. The worst bleeding ever.

My personal horror story goes like this..

I was attending to the second day of a two day seminar, which had a 'gala dinner' the night before. There was, of course, an alcohol serving. I had four glasses of red wine and a beer. This morning the stool was black. This is 'normal' for me after having red wine. So, all looked as usual.

I took a painkiller (ibuprofen) before leaving home, just trying to prevent the inevitable - hangover.

Noon passed, had a lunch and a cup of coffee. In the afternoon, came the time to let that coffee out, went to a bathroom.

I was sitting relaxed on the toilet and just after drying out I noticed that the toilet paper had some blood on in. I thought I had been hasty in the morning - I have a persistent (external) haemorrhoid which occasionally gives a blood sample, but that didn't happen this morning..?

I sweeped again and the paper got soaking wet - of blood. And another pad of paper. And another.. At this point I was freaking out. Tried to stay calm.

The blood really smelled like blood. It was dark red and literally all over the place. After fourth blood soaked paper pad I decided not to wait for it to end - at that point it seemed endless. I took a bunch of toilet paper and stuck it in my ass and decided to take a taxi - to home or the nearest hospital. I chose home.

After I got there the bleeding was gone. No blood. Nothing. Nowhere. Now, two hours after, nothing. I'm starting to relax now.

This is most definitely caused by alcohol. Therefore I'll never drink again. Also I'll never go to the bathroom again. I may have to stop eating too.

Oh no I won't, I'm just kidding

There was a post from a guest user that said

This is interesting since I'm a 'wannabe-bodybuilder' (read: trying hard to gain muscle..) and my nutrition is rich of protein, vitamins and minerals mentioned here, and also including fiber.

According to this I'm just tripping.. :)

Well, next time this happens, I'll definitely take the taxi and head to the doctors.

im 25 yr old f, and am very intune with my body- as to what effects have on my system, food & drink, i am o+bloodtype and have found that dairy/meat/gluton/ acidic food-fruit-sauce do not agree with me as well.- but so no also bleeding is an issue that has been going on since aug 2009 ...good to know that i am not by my lonesome in this condition...i drink red wine and guiness once or twice a month.and that being 1-3wines,2-3 guinesses( not a big drinker because of the fact of how it effects my body)-bloating-bleeding...so my whole life i have had digestive problems and never knew that it wasnt normal, after trying every natural and homeopathic remedy that normally would work for someone in my position and it failing for me. i went back to chinese herbal tea/medicine as well as organic apple cidar vinegar (1- 2x a day)..and oolong tea for regular movements...as i have found also emotionally holding onto things or having to have control over everything in life also has an effect on regularity as well...ive learned to let go and move on from things in the past as well come to accept that whatever will be will be without my "control" and i am still doing so-its not as easy as you would think... but so after getting back to some kind of normalcy... but the day after drinking there is bright red blood, along with stool, which means it is coming from lower intesting being bright red and not deep red or maroon,so i associated drinking with that because of the fact the when i dont drink i do not have bleeding, and am not as bloated as if i did i get bloated thighs/lower back, lower abdomen..even minimal amount of alcohol, 1-2glasses of wine cause this..3-guinesses..i take vitamins everyday, depending on what i feel my body needs, so i assumed there was a common factor with me taking b-12 vitamin and bleeding as well. not sure what yet but i will figure it out....so as for now im glad i found this post, not glad about the subject...but relieved in a sense that i am not alone in this complication....also family hx of colon cancer/digestive problems on my mothers side. she doesnt have the severity of my issues, hers are still gi tract...put her problem area is the throat- again from alcohol & stress, she doesnt drink anymore so thats good, and so it seems i will be following in her footsteps. no alcohol for me, its not worth the problems that it causes. hopefully someone will take something from here with them, if not i just wanted to share my experience as well. thanks and takecare

Hi,

I had this too and got it checked out. I had eaten too much bread and starchy foods combined with drinking. When I am out drinking or on holiday I tend to eat more breads, pasta and starchy foods.

My doctors view was..Bleeding is either hard rough stools, from diet (eat more veg and fruit and fibre). Hydration and irritation from the alcohol similar to IBS or, something serious!! If you have dark red blood in your stools see your doctor NOW, if you have light red blood and its not to much in volume make an appointment.

I would also say drink more water eat more fruit make sure red meat is on the menu for B vits if you like a drink. Open your eyes and admit you like a few, dont we all. With fun comes a cost, reduce it by being sensible. Drink water before and after a night of drinking. Eat well, because you owe yourself that bleeding, or not...!! "I dont like the taste of healthy food" is a pathetic lazy excuse. There are healthy foods for everyones taste out there. Just get off your ass and find the ones you like.. :-)

What a pro said in reference to possible ulcers too:

About the Connection Between Drinking Alcohol and Rectal Bleeding

By Linda Hinkle,

Rectal bleeding, the passing of blood through the anus, can be caused by many different diseases and conditions. Although it isn't one of the most common causes, there is some connection between drinking alcohol and rectal bleeding. For that reason, anyone who consumes alcohol on a regular basis needs to understand the effect it can have on rectal bleeding.

Features
A major connection between alcohol and rectal bleeding is actually a result of the connection between alcohol and peptic ulcers. Consumption of alcohol can lead to peptic ulcers which in turn can cause rectal bleeding. Peptic ulcers are open sores on the lining of the upper small intestine, esophagus or stomach. The ulcers may bleed and when they do, it may show up as black, tarry stools or dark blood in the stool.

Identification
Burning pain is the most common symptom of peptic ulcers. The pain occurs when stomach acid comes in contact with the open sores and is usually worse when the stomach is empty. The pain can occur anywhere from the breastbone to the navel and may last only a few minutes or several hours. It may come and go over a period of a few days or weeks. Nighttime flare-ups of pain are also common. Less common but more severe symptoms of peptic ulcers include vomiting blood, nausea, chest pain, unexplained weight loss and dark blood in stools or black, tarry stools.

Significance
Alcohol can aggravate and erode the mucous lining of the stomach. As a result, an increased amount of stomach acid is produced. However, it is not certain whether excessive consumption of alcohol is a lone cause of peptic ulcers or if a combination of factors must be present for the sores to develop. Other contributing factors may include medications and the H. pylori bacteria.

Considerations
For many years the common assumption was that peptic ulcers developed as a result of lifestyle. Factors such as excessive consumption of alcohol, stress and diet were considered to be some of the main causes of the ulcers. However, experts now believe that most ulcers are caused by bacterial infections or medications. It should also be noted that peptic ulcers in general are uncommon and can usually be treated successfully in a matter of weeks.

Warning
Excessive use of alcohol also increases the risk of developing colorectal cancer, another cause of rectal bleeding. Because this cancer is very serious, any rectal bleeding should be investigated to determine its origin.

Bleeding while going to the bathroom can be many things and you should see a doctor. It could be as simple as hemorrhoids or something more complex. If the blood is red, it means it's close to the outside. If it's black, it is in your intestines. Alcohol can cause thinning of the blood and make it harder to clot, so you will see more blood while you are intoxicated or for awhile after--or might not see the bleeding normally when you don't have anything in you thinning the blood. Best bet is to see a doc. Like I said, it could be hemorrhoids, but my dad had that prob and it ended up to be colon cancer. He noticed the blood, went to the doc and had the growths removed and it never came back--ironically, he got it from drinking.... But there are many things that can do that, from the mundane to big stuff. Just best to get a check up so you can fix it and not have to worry about it anymore =o)

When you drink alcohol, your liver needs to work harder to process it and detoxify your blood. The bloodstream entering your liver must slow down and wait its turn, and the worse it is contaminated the worse the bottleneck trying to get in. Since one third of your rectal veins port directly into your liver, a back-up of blood in the rectum is the immediate consequence. The rectum becomes overloaded with blood which causes the veins and capillaries to physically expand to accommodate it. The stretching and inflammation eventually pinch off normal outflow from the area and you are left with what are essentially blood balloons. Then the only way for the condition to resolve itself is for the blood to "weep" out through the circulatory tissue walls, which is what proceeds to happen.

That is the simple explanation of how alcohol consumption results in hemorrhoids and their related bloody discharge.

I drank a lot one night and woke up the next morning with a lot of rectal bleeding. There was also a lot of pressure down there as well. I was quite worried, but as a nurse I just figured I would wait...:S...well, this bleeding went on for about two weeks and it wasn't getting any better. The blood would be all the time whether I had a BM or just urinated, the blood would have clots at times and at times it would be dark red and at other times bright red. Finally, after I started getting worried I went to the doctor. I went in to have a colonoscopy and the physician said I had Proctitis. This is just an irritation in the colon/rectum. After a week and a half of suppositories it went away. Then I drank again and the bleeding came back. I only drink on occasion (like maybe once a month if that), and the bleeding only occurs for about 5 days after drinking now. So, just a little food for thought, but I would really recommend going to your primary care provider to be sure you haven't lost a lot of blood or possibly have a larger issue:) Good luck!!!

Thanks for al the comments they have helped a lot. I too have blood loss when drinking sometimes for a couple days. I have found that the only relevent cure is to stop drinking completely. Smoke some herbal medicince if you want to relax. It's less worrysome.

I am relieved to have come upon this. I'm a 22 yr old female. Got married 8 months ago, and since then my stomach has been totally torn up - bloating, cramps, diarrhea, etc. I finally attributed it to the fact that I was having a drink or 2 every night, and coffee every morning, and that obviously this wasn't agreeing with me. (I eat healthy.) I slowed it down and felt better, and started back up, though not as frequently. Maybe a couple of months ago I'd notice a little dab or two of blood after a b.m. but didn't think much of it. Just recently it's gotten kind of worse, more often I've been bleeding. A couple of weekends ago i had an energy drink & vodka, and had bleeding throughout the night.. it's almost instant! (bright red, fresh, not the darker blood). It started by the time I got to the bar I was pregaming for. It wasn't as heavy as a menstrual cycle or anything, but still more than normal. I flat out quit the coffee and alcohol, and the bleeding went away. Last night I had a HALF glass of wine and today there was yet another tiny bit of blood after a b.m. - I'm almost certain it's the alcohol. I'm just not ready to give it up yet!! I'm going to New Orleans soon! Am I gonna die if I have a hand grenade or something on Bourbon Street? I don't know if i can get into the herbal substitute some have suggested.. i get kind of paranoid. I'm too young for this! I guess I'm also putting off the doctor since I know what makes the problems happen. What to do?
Oh yeah, i also don't have regular b.m.'s... is this a problem? i try activia and everything but I often don't even have movement one a day.

Hello everyone freaking out about their blood loss I am 22, have taken loads of drugs in my lifetime (without ill effect) and have found that nothing is worse than alcohol. As I don't take them anymore I can now drink a litre of bourbon in a sitting and most recently, threw up a chunk of stomach or two with some blood and of course after my maxalon shot had to digest the remaining stomach lining blood causing it to circle through my liver (which hurts to do so) and pass it into the toilet (which is scary!). Alcohol is the most evil substance I have ever encountered, and I have been going hard at it ever since i stopped taking rec drugs and smoking pot. I think rec drugs and pot smoking causes less internal bleeding and pain to be quite honest. >:( ? ! why arn't they legal instead of alcohol? Alcohol makes people insides bleed, damn... thats hard sh*t lol

I am happy to see others with the same issue.  after many years of suffering I have narrowed it down to Alchohol, and now I am looking for a solution other than quitting, never was a quitter. ;)

I intend to have a Dr. look at my liver,  I drank (very moderately) for many years before the bleeding started, but as I get older I may have damaged my liver and the bleading is a symptom of this.  I do take b12 vitamins and quit eating beef about 2 years ago. so will experiment with that, also I take an excedrine with any alchohol so that I do not get a headache, and maybe this is related with the thinned blood. ;-)  or liver damage.

Glad i found this thread after searching today.
Im a 23 yer old male and have always had light bleeding after a big night out i also never get hung over if that has anything to do with this, but nothing that wasn't gone after 1 piece of toilet paper, but last night i had a massive outing in London 100-150 pounds of drinks for myself, and today after i woke up it was the usual no hang over and needing to use the bathroom (my BM are always runny or getting close to diarrhea after big nights) and it was much heavier than i have ever experienced and got incredibly worried.
Definately agree that it has something to do with alchohol and i plan to get it checked out when i get back home but thats not for another 9 weeks so for now im going to cut back on drinking and take it slower while im here and see if it helps :)
