I've had this issue of rectal bleeding when I drink beer for more than a day or two in a row. It started when I was in my early twenties and it's still an issue at 51. I've also had issues with IBS and hemorrhoids. The bleeding can get very severe at times and has worried me a lot.. but 20 some years later I'm still going strong, so it can't be all that serious. Sometimes it's been so bad if I push hard (which you should never do) a steady steam of blood shoots out like a squirt gun. A doctor once told me it's related to liver problems. Basically he explained that the liver is sort of like a blood filter and when the filter gets all clogged up it raises the pressure behind the filter - hepatic pressure, or portal hypertension. Portal hypertension is an increase in the blood pressure within the portal venous system. Veins coming from your stomach, intestines, pancreas and spleen all merge into the portal vein, which then branches into smaller vessels and travels through the liver. If the vessels in the liver are blocked due to liver swelling or damage, the blood can't flow properly through the liver. This, high pressure in the portal system develops which leads to the development of large, swollen veins within the stomach and/or rectum. Rectal tissue is very fragile and the varices can rupture and bleed. If it happens in your stomach or other abdominal areas however it can be life threatening.

For me, alcohol consumption leads to dry stool and then rectal bleeding. Every time my stool becomes dry, I feel a little bit of pain when passing stool and blood comes after that.

I also bleed quite a bit from internal hemoroids after drinking 2-3 drinks/day for multiple days. After getting my labs analyzed, I found that this blood loss was causing me to be anemic (low iron). After taking an iron supplement, I have found that my ability to exert myself during workouts has improved vastly. Lesson -- If you are working out and performing poorly and bleeding (even a little each day), you are not getting old; you are anemic....take an iron supplement. Or better yet, go get your labs done to check your hemoglobin level.

So glad I found this post - it’s pretty much the only info on this problem on the entire internet! I was beginning to think my problem was unique. I have been a moderate/heavy drinker since my 20s (I’m now 40) and never experienced this issue until around 1 month ago.

I went to docs who did an exam and said he thinks it feels like Hemorrhoids but he hasn’t referred me for any more tests. I kind of wish he had now as I want to be sure there is no bigger issue. I may try and ask to be referred again or perhaps go private.

The first time it happened to me was after a day with friends where I drank 8 pints of beer. Next day my stool was runny and when I went to flush the toilet bowl was red. SHOCKING.

This happened a couple more times over the last 2 months and the only thing I can attribute it to is drinking alcohol.

For me that’s my body giving me a very big signal - you are causing yourself harm and your body does not like it. I have therefore stopped drinking for 10 days now with no issues since. Giving up for good will be tough as it’s been a big part of my life but it’s the right thing to do

(Particularly annoying as I Home brew and I have 25 litres of beer just about ready to drink!)

I just stoped drinking for 10 days and noticed a considerable reduction and then a total stop of bleeding. I just drank quite heavily for the first time since and just been to the loo and its back with vengeance. Interesting...
