Ombre
Ombre has been around for the last 3-4 years, and it shows no signs of going anywhere fast. The word describes hair that's darker at the roots and lighter at the tips - and luckily, you can now buy home ombre kits so that you can get the look at home. When you apply the bleach, make sure that you blend it so that there isn't a line between dark and light hair and if you like, use a darker color on the roots and down to the bleach. Generally, ombre works best on hair that hasn't been colored but if you persevere, you can get there!

Pastels
The pastel look is super cute and it's also incredibly versatile. If you're already blond, color hair all over with a pale pastel hue - baby pink is always cute, but so is baby blue or a light lavender. If you're darker, you can bleach hair - perhaps a section underneath your fringe or you could go down the ombre route, then add the pastel color to the lighter section. Alternatively, use hair chalks - we know it sounds strange! - but just coloring the tips of your hair with a few chalks, then setting into place with a hair spray is a super easy way to get the look, plus, it washes right out.

Dip dye
Dip dye is often confused with ombre, but it's totally different - dip dye is when your hair looks like it has literally been "dipped" in a bright, bold color. A huge trend for 2014 is to dip dye hair in a pastel hue, neon, or in a bright color like red or electric blue. Dip dyed locks look beautiful when pulled into a high pony to really show off the color, or you could style them into a braid. If you're a little afraid to take the plunge, use a hairpiece instead - a quick way to get the look without dyeing your hair.

Platinum blond
"Power" colors are really big news for 2014 and one of the most popular is platinum blond. The idea is to steer away from the wishy-washy and instead, to go for the brightest, boldest color you can imagine. Platinum blond should have slight white or lilac overtones or should simply be a very pale, light blond. You'll typically have to have fairly pale skin to pull this look off and you might want to dye your eyebrows, too (using a dye specifically designed for use on brows) so that your eyebrows don't look mismatched.

Full bangs
Full bangs are one of the hottest trends of 2014 and with good reason - they're incredibly flattering and face-framing to boot. Full, thick bangs are perfect for gals with a slightly pointed or chiselled face as they'll really draw attention to the shape of your face - but if you'd rather soften your face, go for an eye-skimming style that you can push to either side of your face with plenty of feathering around the face. Ask your stylist which style they think you'll suit, if you're getting a little bit stuck, or try a clip in set of bangs to see how you'll look before going for the chop.

Autumnal auburn
Auburn is one of our favorite hair hues as its flattering to just about every skin tone. Look for autumnal auburn hues in deep red, mahogany, golden red, strawberry blond or a dark, brownish red. For depth of color, ask your stylist to throw in a few different colored highlights or lowlights that contrast with the base color, giving it depth and movement - and making it look more natural. You could also ask them to paint a few lighter colored highlights around your face and on the tips of hair - the parts of your hair that would naturally get lightened by the sun.

Super slick low ponytail
The super slick low ponytail is an exceptionally easy party look - and it takes just a few minutes to complete. It's ideal for work, too, or on one of those "bad hair days". Simply brush hair straight back from your face behind your ears, and if you like, slick on a tiny little bit of hair gel or hair oil to really emphasise the slicked back look. Fix into a low ponytail at the nape of your neck, then wrap a tiny strand of the hair around the hairband and fix at the nape of your neck with a hairgrip.

The classic bob
The classic bob is back for 2014 and it's better than ever. This year, we're seeing the classic blunt bob, with chunky bangs and blunt-cut lightly layered lengths, but we're also seeing choppy bobs a la Alexa Chung, as well as asymmetric bobs and shoulder-skimming bobs. Choppy bobs are incredibly face-flattering as they frame your features, plus, they're really easy to maintain. Classic blunt bobs look fabulous when "done", but if you don't have time to blowdry and straighten your hair, they can often look a little frumpy. Choose your bob by thinking about the style that you can most easily maintain.

Mermaid waves
Mermaid waves were seen all over the SS14 catwalks and we love them! Luckily, they are so, so, so easy to create. Before you go to bed at night, wash your hair, brush it through and then braid it into two thick plaits on either side of your head, starting as high up as you can. Fix them into place as low down as you can, then leave in until the morning. Take the braids out and brush through with your fingers - viola, perfect mermaid braids with very little effort! If you like, add a pretty hairband or dot some flowered hair grips through your hair.

Look after your locks with regular trips to the hairdresser
Keep your locks in perfect condition by making regular trips to your stylist. Get a trim at least every 6 to 8 weeks - this will rid hair of split ends and dry frizz. Without this trim, your hair might get longer, but it'll also get frizzier and will become more difficult to manage. Go for a full haircut or restyle every few months, if you like, to keep your hairstyle fresh. If you're getting your hair colored whilst you're there, make sure that you get a nourishing hair conditioning treatment too, just to protect hair and to keep it silky soft.
