Volumizing shampoo and conditioner
It sounds really obvious, but volumizing shampoos and conditioners can make a huge difference to the texture of your hair. Depending on which formula you use, the products can thicken hair from the inside out, or make hair appear thicker. Over time and with repeated use, each hair strand will be slightly thicker and stronger, making your locks much more manageable. Use the best products that you can afford - or, if you can't afford to use expensive products every time you wash your locks, use a thickening product and then a strengthening product every other wash.

Thickening supplements
If your hair is really fine, if your hair falls out or if you suffer from a condition like alopecia or another condition that causes hair loss, supplements could make a huge difference to the texture of your hair. Some supplements contain vitamins and nutrients, which help to stimulate cell turnover and cell repair, repairing follicles that may be damaged or working to provide hair with the protein needed to grow thick and strong. Other supplements work by having a direct effect on the hair follicles or on the individual shafts of hair. Speak to your doctor or pharmacist for more information.

Healthy hair diet
When it comes to thick, beautiful hair, it's not just what you put onto locks that counts - it's what you put inside your body, too! The processes and cells used to promote healthy, strong and thick hair all rely on a healthy diet, including things like plenty of fruits and vegetables, wholegrains and plenty of fiber and foods rich in omega-3 fatty acids like salmon and nuts. It can take a few months for any changes to your diet to make a difference to your locks, so persevere and stick with it and you'll notice a difference soon enough!

Massage your scalp
This might sound a little bit strange, but actually, it's one of the most useful tips on our list. Gently massage your scalp once a day for around five minutes (you can do it whilst you're in the shower, so it won't add any extra time to your day!), using your fingertips. This stimulates blood circulation, which is what the hair follicles need to flourish! For extra nourishment, massage a non-greasy hair oil into the scalp to encourage growth, nourish the scalp with vitamins and nutrients and improve the appearance of hair.

Get regular trims
Getting regular trims will not only make your hair look glossier and healthier, but it'll also make it look thicker. When you're in-between cuts and are stuck with split ends, hair can look thinner and weaker, due to the wispy appearance of the split ends. Getting a trim will blunt the ends of hair, getting rid of all of those fine wispy bits, making hair look thicker. If you want thicker-looking locks, ask your stylist for a blunt cut rather than layers as layers actually make hair look thinner - a blunt shoulder-length bob is very in at the moment and super-chic.

Deep condition your locks
If your hair is wispy it'll look far thinner - especially if it's full of split ends. Getting a deep conditioning treatment at least once a week, and using a regular conditioner in the shower every time you wash your hair, will help to nourish your locks, preventing breakages and split ends. The fewer split ends you have, the thicker your hair will look. On the plus side, hair that is well-conditioned and well-nourished will also be far easier to manage when it comes to styling. If you want to put your hair up, or you want beachy waves, just spritz in a little sea salt spray instead of skipping the conditioner.

Strategic highlights
One of the easiest ways to cheat your way to thicker looking locks is to pay a visit to a hair colorist. Strategic highlights, positioned around the crown of your head a little like a "halo" will trick the eye into thinking the hair looks thicker. Choose colors that break up the main hair color and if you get blond highlights, choose at least 2 or 3 blond colors so that the hair has some life and movement. If you prefer darker colors, opt for auburns and aubergines - they'll glint under the light and will make hair look thicker, despite not being particularly obvious. Sneaky, eh?

A faux bob
A faux bob is not only a fantastic way to make your hair look thicker, but it's also a brilliant way to try out a shorter hairstyle if you're thinking of getting your hair chopped off but are afraid of taking the plunge. Fake your way to thicker hair by simply tucking and rolling the hair up underneath itself, using pins and grips to secure into place underneath the nape of the neck, making sure that there's a little bit of overhang to cover up the grips and give the illusion of the bob. You might find it easier to get this look with another pair of hands.

Add extensions
If your head of hair is just never going to be full, regardless of the thickening treatments, products and colors that you use, you might want to try hair extensions. Extensions aren't only used for length - in fact, hairdressers often use them to thicken hair, too. You can buy clip in extensions that quite literally clip into the hair underneath the top layer - or, you can get extensions actually bonded to hair, making them more permanent, which means that you can have thicker locks all week long without having to worry about clipping in your extensions before you go out.

Blow dry hair upside down
The simplest tip yet one of the most effective - for big, bouncy locks, extra volume and thicker-looking hair, follow this tip next time you blow dry your hair. Tip your head upside down and blast the hair with the dryer until 90% dry. Once dry, twist the hair into two sections away from the face. Blast those sections with the hair dryer and then once dry, leave to cool completely before untwisting and gently brushing through using your fingertips. Viola! A brilliant, easy blow dry that you can easily do first thing in the morning before work.
